Masks Next Season

Expected this especially given the warnings about a third (admittedly lower) spike modelled for the autumn in addition to today’s admittance that it will be almost impossible to keep the more virulent strains out of the UK long term. Thinks it’s indicative that despite a fairly bullish rhetoric there’s still a degree of nervousness around what the next 9 months will look like.

These must be banned at all costs. Another upside of lockdown was that it finally allowed me to take walking into a bank wearing a mask with a big bulge in my pocket and then demanding money off my bucket list.

I interpreted it as June 21st as being the target for full on back to normal as in no social distancing or masks required. Which is the main reason I couldn’t envisage that actually happening or maybe it’s just we’ve been under restrictions for so long I’m starting to forget what it’s like.

Be interesting to see if people continue to wear masks following the easing of restrictions. It’s something that has happened in some other countries even before the virus. I, for one, can’t wait to not wear them ever again.

I'm the same, fed up of wearing them but for as long as I have to, I will.

There will be a minority of people who will now never feel safe from Covid.

All restrictions were never going to disappear on June 21 whatever the data says.

We can only wait and see. Don't expect anything as not even the Gvt know for sure.

Let's all wear Bettis masks, then when it kicks off on the kop between Chris lovers and those who weren't bothered, it'll be Bettis who gets banged up

If masks work why do infection rates go up? If they don't work why do we have to wear them? Just asking.
Face coverings reduce the amount of water droplets you breathe out into the air but they don’t eliminate it they also don’t prevent you from coming into contact with others water droplets and they don’t cover all covid entry points into the body such as the eyes. They help to reduce the rate of transmission but don’t eliminate it. I think they’ll be nervous about football because of the tightness of the seating coupled with the amount of droplets generated through actions like shouting and singing. Masks will probably form part of the solution alongside vaccines because vaccines reduce the severity of infection but don’t prevent infection and indeed even when vaccinated you can still transmit so if imagine mitigating precautions such as mask will remain in place for some time.

I went to Sweden to visit family last October and had the best time I've had in years in a liberal society (has its drawbacks in certain parts of Stockholm but that's another story) where people are generally free to make their own decisions and deal with the consequences . First thing I did after stepping off the plane was stuff the mask into my bag, not to be seen for the rest of the week.

All they had at the time was the occasional sign saying to try not to stand too close to other people and mask wearers were generally looked at like they had two heads, like they would have been in this country before Covid was a thing.

If there's no fine or legal consequence for not wearing one once things eventually return to some sort of normality, then it'll go into the sock drawer until we inevitably have to panic about something else and get it back out again.

Things haven’t worked out too well for this approach in Sweden since then though have they.
I’m all for people making choices, but how do you make sure that people are making informed choices? You can only make an informed choice if you understand the facts, and it is clear that the majority of people don’t. Just because there is no legal or financial implication doesn’t mean there isn’t a social, ethical or moral implication.

Whats the program seller gonna be shouting...

"fweeee kids ur ahhhhppigrammmm, gitsssurrr pigwam...fweeee kids "

If you're told that wearing a mask might help protect yourself then I'd agree that if you don't want to wear one that's up to you. When you're told it's to protect other people, I don't understand how anyone can conclude "no I don't care, wearing a mask is just too big an inconvenience, tough luck if I infect someone".

If I have to wear a mask to go to games next season it'll be an incredibly minor inconvenience, nothing more. Either way, can't wait.

Apologies for such a downbeat post after what has happened in the last week or so. Culture Secretary has said that they will be looking at introducing COVID certification, one way systems and masks for sporting events.

Literally don't know what to say, that is not football.
I'm out,I ain't being muzzled for no one.

No, I agree, it is football and it is infinitely better than watching on a TV screen. Just disappointed I guess as I thought all restrictions were lifted on 21st June. Maybe that's naivety on my part though.
Restrictions to last at least two more years.

Im sure I read somewhere the Swedish model didnt work too well

Pretty much everyone who is going to get vaccinated, will have by the start of next season. so there is no need for these measures. Plus football is an outdoors sport - which makes it even safer. When are people going to turn around and say, enough is enough, we are not doing this anymore. The government will keep pushing draconian measures for as long as we (the people) let them do it.
Is that this Government or all of them in the World? You do know this is a Pandemic and most of Europe is heading into a third wave due to their political incompetence with the vaccines roll out. Expect these " Draconian ( pathetic ) measures for at least another year. They will be relaxed and normality will certainly lead to localised short circuit breakers. Having the vaccine protect yourself from serious illness , not others.
