Abuse towards players

Anyone abusing players on twitter should get a lifetime ban, they are not real blades
Tend to agree. Incidentally, would you feel the same if it was Pig players they were abusing?

Not a dig at you BTW just that I know people who would call a Unitedite a cunt for slagging off one of our players on social media but if it was a Wendy player they would think 'reight lad'

What is this abuse then? What signifies abuse? If some cunt like Lundstram is strutting about the pitch with a lack of effort then I’ll call it out but if someone like Stevens, who has played shocking for some time now or Norwood, who has done quite a few mistakes and still plays shite or still makes mistakes, I won’t give them any pelters as such because it’s not for a lack of effort. I’ll not wish Lundstram or his family dead or anything like that, I just don’t want a lazy twat who doesn’t want to be here wearing our red and white stripes, fairly simple stuff really.

Again, nobody knows a single thing about what’s gone off anyway so it’s pure conjecture yet again.
I think criticism of someone performance is fine especially on somewhere like here that for the purpose of debating united as others have said if a player is on here looking then that’s an active decision they have taken to seek out that feedback. I think where it crosses a line is when it’s anything none football related about a player or when people directly get in contact with that player in an unsolicited way.

So what all about that 'Be Kind' mantra then?

Or was that just a bit of a trendy fad, for a bit?

Why is that abuse? Lundstram has took us for cunts most of the season, why’s it a one way street? As I said, Stevens and Norwood whilst having mistakes in them are at least showing willing.

What is your point georgebernardshaw ?

Tried to quote your post but it wouldn’t let me, sorry GBS.

Agreed, I would never do that, no one should but unfortunately not everyone is like me, you or many more on here.

That’s the issue and unfortunately the idiots shout loudest.

He said, fair enough to criticise when we make a mistake but "saying I hope your kids... is not on". Which sounds like unacceptable abuse
Of course that is unacceptable, I’d do time if someone said that to me or mine. One of my points is that no one knows if it’s Blades fans doing it, just presumptions again. Whoever it is needs sorting though, report it, out it and get the fucker sorted, things like this get hidden away and that’s part of the reason nothing ever gets done about it.

I don't do social media, this is about the nearest I get. Whilst it's easy to think that a lot of this is done by keyboard warriors who wouldn't behave like that in public, sadly we now live in a society where actually a lot of people do behave like that in public. Witness the abuse hurled in the last 12 months at supermarket workers, NHS staff, bus and train staff, and others who are just trying to do their jobs and keep the public safe under really difficult circumstances.
The idiots who behave like this have no thought for the feelings of others, and if they can hurl vile abuse at some middle aged lady on a Tesco checkout they're not going to think twice about what they say online to a footballer.
It's not just a football thing, it's a society thing, and some bits of our society are rather unpleasant.
Good on Ollie Norwood for calling it out - he is, after all, a human being with feelings and a family.

No probs with the earlier post, Wiz, the only question I can ask about your obviously strong views about John Lundstram is how you feel calling him a cunt helps the cause?

Other than that, we’ll have to agree to differ, mate

It’s usually more a figure of speech GBS and in this case for someone not pulling their weight in tough times but Lundstram has deserved it and I’ve never called any player playing for us this before. He’s left us with 2 in midfield most of the time this season, 2 players badly out of form but still showing some effort but unfortunately the quality has been lacking this season from them, why this has happened can be for another day, when this has been lacking he’s being hiding in games, barely putting a tackle in, the only tackles he does put in ends up being fouls from him being lazy, out of position and basically not being arsed to track back. If we all could watch games back just watching Lundstram I’m fairly sure that you and most of us would be appalled at his efforts, I can’t accept this from one of our players, especially when it puts pressure on the rest of the lads to do all the work for him.

Anyway, to answer your question GBS, it probably won’t help but a bloke who has from my naked eye lacked effort when the chips were down is not going to get my sympathy, I’m not going into his refusal to sign a contract either because I can’t be arsed with it, the only thing I want a journalist with any bollocks to ask Wilder, is why he’s persisted with him for so long when it’s clear to see how little effort he’s put into games. His kit never needs washing ffs! I’m fairly sure Lundstram doesn’t give a fuck about me and if he’s reading this probably thinks I’m a cunt but at least I’m an honest one.

I work on building sites all over the country and there’s some cunts, some bigger than others, where I’m from, what I’ve lived for and how I was brought up, people who are cunts should be called out as such, it doesn’t mean I want them or their kids killed though, that’s just bonkers!

Been reading this thread with interest, as one of the more notorious critics for many years.

I feel that direct abuse is unforgivable. Personally messaging someone to find them out to abuse them is not fair. As is changing a debate from the subject to ad hominem or targeting other areas (such as family or personal matters) just to score points. Norwood has a point regarding the personalised stuff he has suffered.

I will say this however. The place the players do their business is on the pitch. It is ninety paid minutes in a career within their lives. Good or bad, it is what we judge them on as professional, highly paid, highly trained sporting representatives of the tribe we belong to. In that, we expect maximum effort and commitment and an element of success which is commensurate to our personal expectations and ideals. Each one of us is different either in minute, or extreme ways ... that is borne out on these very pages. S24SU, however belongs to us, the fans. Players should - rightly - enter with caution because it would be no different of they were sat in any of the stands on a matchday listening to the off-field opinions of the laypeople who pay their wages. If they don't like the comments they see on here (regarding their footballing performance during the games recently played) they should avoid. It may have escaped some players' attentions that the past four seasons have seen eminent praise bestowed upon them almost unreservedly on all social media platforms. I recall the Instagram accounts of most players on promotion were lit up all over the place with all sorts of enamouring and celebratory posts These 'goods' and 'bads' are part of being in the public eye - ask some TV stars, even the supposed more popular ones, of the limit of personal physical threats, unrequited attacks and really, really vile comments shot their way over a legion of online platforms. Some of these recipients are barely out of childhood.

I get Norwood's and Ramsdale's concern over some comments made. With regard tragetted, personal abuse it holds water. But let's not get away from the fact that they are just two of about nine key players who this season have contrived to humiliate and embarrass a very large fanbase, one which 24 short months ago (12 of them covered by a global pandemic and all that it brings down) had giant faith and belief in Wilder and his squad. I for one was hoping, after we'd spent so long away from the top flight and down amongst the dogshit, we'd spend more than one or two seasons in the top flight or if caught in a relegation battle, would be fighting over points and goal differences until the last match and final whistle. I have just been invited to the 'Blade2Blade' facebook group and in honestly I have never seen such an array of fluffers and fantasists in my life. According to them, Ramsdale has miraculously turned into Henderson after the last two games and anyone who says not can fuck off because they are not 'real supporters'. We've heard this bullshit on here, too. It's bordering on the cancel culture syndrome. You never hear critics - let alone the likes of me - giving a caustic account of one of our many, many substandard performances and capping it off with 'anyone who disagrees with me can fuck off to S6'. Fans will have differing ways of dealing with victory and defeat, and this seasons disappointments have left a few - including me - a little raw. I could get it if we hadn't spend some much profligate, wasted cash on players who are no better than the side we were promoted with (see this seasons team line ups to see how many legacy players we still field)

In short, if players dip their feet into the cesspit that is Twitter and Instagram, they should expect to get shit between their toes. We are all, including them, human.

OK Wiz, understood a bit better now, thanks.

A well considered and laid out response there Pompey.

Call me an old, out of touch bugger but I don’t like Facebook etc. I have a whatsapp account for messaging the kids and grandkids and a private group on Facebook for my Ukrainian family in Lvov. I updated my photo on Facebook last week and got likes and comments from 100 odd people I have never heard of. It's bonkers and dangerous.

Anyone listened to norwoods interview today? It’s been discussed on here previous regarding ramsdale receiving abuse but that interview with Norwood today is heart breaking he’s clearly emotionally distressed about the abuse he’s received on social media. I’ve criticised his performances on here but always had respect for what he’s done for this football club. Anyone directing personal abuse towards him on social media should be ashamed.

In a season of disappointments, I'm genuinely not exaggerating when I say one of the biggest is the way some Blades have responded to our players.

Some of the players coming in for very harsh criticism are the same ones responsible for the fact we're even here in the Premier League at all. It doesn't make them immune from reasonable criticism on a game by game basis where they don't perform, but surely it buys them some respect?

The saddest thing is we waited a long fucking time for a good set of players, and lads, to take us up the leagues - we get exactly that and now some of them are subject to the same level of vitriol that Adkin's lot got in LG1 all that time ago. Do they really deserve that?

We may get relegated this season, of course. It's looking very likely. But there's some players on that squad that have given us a hell of a lot these last few years and I personally don't think a relegation from Europe's Billionaires league cancels that out.

I thought we were a bit better than these fairweather Premier League wankers. Can we show it?

I think sometimes it’s easy to believe any fans base is special when things are going well but there always the chance things turn.

I think some of the players in this group have under performed compared to their own high standards this year and right now that tarnishes them but in years to come when people talk about the wilder years they’ll be remembered for the promotion teams in the main with the caveat added that it was a shame they could t sustain it in the prem.

Those from the Warnock era who are remembered fondly don’t have the prem failed held against them long term and I don’t think this group will either especially if we pick up a few more results between now and the end of the season.

Sure - but given our own experience as a fanbase these last few years I would hope for a more nuanced view of our players. Its not about defending them to the hilt but it's about considering their career with us as a whole.

For example, I think Stevens and Norwood in particular have generally been poor by the standards I've seen them set previously.

That's it! That's all that needs to be said. Personal attacks are out of order and not needed. Those two as an example have contributed so much yet if you were to read some of the stuff online about them.....jeez it isn't version of being a fan, in my opinion, put it that way.

I agree with you but also concede as others have said that football is inherently emotional and so elicits emotional responses which means people swing to the extreme both in their praise and their criticism. And there are places within the public forum to express those feelings.

However I think all have agreed on this thread that direct, personal and unsolicited abuse aimed towards a player is out of line and isn’t in anyway supporting the club and isn’t something that should ever just be accepted or condoned.

Well apart from popping on here a few times a week, I've managed to live without facetube or twatter so far in my life, I'm not a big fan of this social media shit, I don't understand why you would message someone to vent your spleen at them, I'm one of those that thinks things like that should be done face to face, but in the case of the players you can't and really shouldn't do that, that's Wilders job, and i know we all have our opinions on each and every one of them week in week out, but it's only our personal opinions at that point in time, and we all reflect on those opinions, some stand adament, some see the other side, a majority realise we may have been harsh, but it doesnt give any of us the right to personally message the players and abuse them, that's just cowardly, cunty and sad!, get a fucking life you loser twats!!
How would you feel if people were messaging wishing your wives and kids harm!!??
If I were the gaffer I'd be suggesting they delete their accounts and concentrate on their family's and football, afterall, I don't see the pleasure in reading what was in someone's morning shit that morning, or how many birds have shit on their car or what they are having for lunch! Fucking pathetic.

Oh, good luck to the lads today, don't play like shitcunts, and bring home 3 points!!!
COYRAWW!

Some people seem to think its their duty to give dogs abuse to the players if they aren't getting the desired results. In this world players are only deemed worthy of support if they are already doing well. These people may think they are 'supporters' but in reality their relationship with the club is completely transactional.

If I was a footballer I would just stay off it. I've had to delete the apps after a couple of games this season and I'm only sat at home watching the games on TV. The constant negativity/whining/vitriol really starts to get you down. Watching the tide turn so rapidly on players we were lauding to the heavens in the past few seasons, as well as youngsters making their way in the game is really grim.

Most people use social media to some degree and it takes on an ever increasing importance within everyday life. Just like the internet, was a niche thing in the 90s, its something you pretty much can't live without and social media will ultimately go the same way. Despite the huge downsides to platforms like Twitter and Facebook they can be useful/informative and ultimately a necessary part of life. I'd be annoyed if my job prevented me from using it but for the sake of their careers players need to stay off it. The chance for you to post up a few pictures from your holidays in Dubai really isn't worth the hassle.

Football is a passionate game and either playing or watching in the heat of the moment I've said plenty of things to and about people I wouldn't in any other situation. That said there is something seriously odd about getting your phone out after you've had a few cans in an evening sending a DM to a player at the club you claim to support and saying something that's clearly going to have an impact on them (and not in a good way). When you listen to players talking about how tough you need to be to make it as a pro and play in front of 20,000 people calling you a cunt or whatever....that's one thing. This is something else.
Good post.
The bottom line is we can all easily live without social media,so if it’s becomes a negative in your life just bin it,if it hurts don’t do it.
I went without what people perceive to be an absolute essential for 8 years........a TV, did I miss owt? not a thing,in fact I was blissfully unaware and put the time I would’ve wasted watching it to good use.
This forum is my only dabble into social media and about as much as I can take.
I grew up in a time with no mobiles no internet and black&white telly.....how the Flip did I survive.
As for pro footballers being personally abused on social media, what were they expecting?

Tend to agree. Incidentally, would you feel the same if it was Pig players they were abusing?

If anyone sends personal abuse and threats to anyone on twitter over something as trivial as football then there's something mentally not right with them. Speak to people on social media how you would in real life it's really that simple. So yes I would include pig players and any players in that.

On an almost unrelated subject, Pirate Petes tomorrow followed by lunch at Saltys, highlight of the week.......
Crab pardon my ignorance but are these eating places by any chance sir, and where are they?.
