Under normal circumstances, I’d agree. If we were staying up, it wouldn’t be an issue because we could just give them a decent contract and the promise of first team football. But we’re down, nothing’s going to stop that. My concern is that these kids will already be on other clubs’ radar and the only uncertainty is whether they could step up to the PL. If that uncertainty is removed, then we could get offers for them, which will, at the very least, unsettle them and could end up with us selling them, for relatively low sums plus add ons.
Then we have to watch more kids we’ve produced turning out for Everton, Southampton etc. It still pisses me off to watch DCL and JEC, never mind Walker and Maguire.
Admittedly, I can be a pessimist and this season has only made me more pessimistic. At the moment, I just feel like if something can go wrong, it will.

Make sure they’re on long contracts and we get decent money for them, like we did with Brooks. If they’re playing regularly we can try to convince them to stay and benefit from first team football, at least until the end of the season. It might work if we’re doing well.
I don’t have particularly strong feelings either way, tbh, it’s just something else I can see that could go wrong. There’s also the argument that if they’re doing well training with the first team, they’ve earned the opportunity to play and denying them that opportunity is just as likely to see them leave, so maybe he’ll have to play them at some point soon.
