Is that the old, old JSS in the background? My grandad is on the back row, so I’m pretty sure it’s the Sheffield City Police team from the mid 30s.
Yes the JSS, Kop end the section that was Blitzed in 1940.
Better though, from a personal point is The Terrace, despite it not being the end I stood on as a kid and for many years there after.
A marvellous, between wars, representation of a section of the ground. Thank you

Much shame and whatever else should be dumped on whoever allowed that superb building to fall into ruin and subsequent demolition
The manager of the Empire for much of the 50's was a guy called Johnny Spitzer who always sat in a chair in the Lobby watching over the entrance. He had a permanent suite at the Grand Hotel, then on Leopold St. Even further back I remember reading a book by Joan Collins' Dad who worked there as Asst Manager , maybe just after the war. He recounts how he lodged with a family in Sheffield where they were all Blades, and for many years afterwards. when he had moved on, he always looked for UTD result in the paper.
I remember seeing the Inkspots there a singing group from USA who were great fun, also Issy Bonn, Carroll Lewis, Ronnie Ronalde ( yeah I know theyre ancient memories.)

Saw the 'Ink Spots' in Blackpool either '45 or '46. Slight memory of the act but can still see the cover of the programme in my minds eye's, great big ink spots/splashes all over it.
Issy Bonn and Carroll Lewis, remember them on the wireless, but have forgotten what they did.
Wasn't Bonn a singer and Lewis had a dance band?

Yes Bonn was a singer, did he have trouble with the tax man and had to scarper off somewhere.? Carroll Lewis had like a travelling troupe and gave new talent a break on the show as I recall.
Never saw Percy .

No got it wrong, Bonn didn't have tax troubles - it was Josef Locke. Yeah , ask your mothers.! Saw him at the Empire- Great Irish singer, bit of a womaniser - but whats wrong with that.?

Not an ounce of worry/doubt on the faces in the crowd they all know it's a foul, just waiting for the ref. to blow.
I bet they had summot to say 30 seconds later, have you a photo of that SB? ;)
I always thought 'thuper mac' was always just over stepping the mark in incidents like this. Compare him with 'Doc', who was no angle, but believe played a more 'Corinthian' game.

David Bingley there in the crowd with paper under his arm.!!

Yes it was a foul leading up to the equaliser 8/9/1973

Would love to ask mi mum, but that's life, mi gran was a big fan of Locke or any decent tenor, had to be quiet when they came on t' wireless. Strangely, she really liked German tenors even after losing a nephew and a twice wounded husband, pre nuptials, in the first round and three kids, unscathed, in the replay.
I'm right behind you, if you'll excuse the expression, when it comes to women, aren't they lovely, great, fabulous, until they get the 'monk' on. Plan 'B' time then :- Pub, fucking lock down.

There were several shops over the years. That’s why l wondered if the barbers in Cambridge Arcade was one of them.
Remember one on High Court, off High St and another in the Castle Market in mid 60's, maybe on further up town also.
I'd like to say thanks for the bump ref. Guinness West Indian, I hadn't come across it before, sheltered upbringing and no interest in bottled beer biggest part of life. Read your post, got some and it's on mi list now. Thank You.

I remember Johnny Spitzer well , a big roly poly guy who could be seen most nights waddling over the crossing outside the Grand after the pubs shut .

I didn’t see any of the acts you mention but did see Albert Modley , Al Read , Lonnie Donegan and what will be a surprise to many , Laurel and Hardy .

The latter appeared at the Empire in both ’52 and ‘54 and I was lucky enough to see them first time around .

Ah yes , Percy Edwards . Whenever I see his name I am reminded of the story about the bloke who goes to audition for a touring Variety Show .

It’s late in the day when his turn arrives and the chairman of the judging panel says to him - “ I don’t want to disappoint you , but if you’re a singer , dancer or comedian it’s not worth going ahead as we’ve already got dozens of those to choose from “.

“Oh no” says the bloke “ I don’t do any of those things “.

“Then what do you do”?

“I do farmyard impressions “

“Fantastic “ says the judge “ We desperately need a novelty act and we’ve not had a single one all day - so when you’re ready , off you go “.

The bloke takes a deep breath , cups both hands round his mouth then bellows in his loudest voice -

“ SHIFT THAT FUCKING TRACTOR , YER DAFT TWAT “. :D:D

Great memory there. Hope you have caught that newish film about Laurel and Hardy - very good. On Netflix I think.
