My connection with DW, and I mean the old part, Carr Lane top to the concrete houses roughly, was '57-'61. I never lived there.
I had some good, summer time, Saturday and the odd Sunday nights in the Miners Arms, mainly, with the odd visit to the Heart of Oaks over that period.
If memory serves me right there wasn't even a shop there then but the folk were ok and I got to know a few quite well.
Sign of the times, Hearts of Oak now housing. Same happening on the Talbot site and new licensees needed at the Miners.

Was there a reason why we went with white shorts and socks for the home kit in 93? This looks so much better.
There was, I spoke to Dave Basset on R.S. during a phone in and asked him about the choice of white shorts.
His answer was that they’d gone with white to brighten our kit up! I replied that United play in black shorts and let him know that the last time we changed to white shorts we were relegated, he just laughed.
I did warn him.

Cheers XM. I lived in Coal Aston 1960 to 1979, all my childhood basically. It was fine as a kid and a nice place to bring kids up. It was very "villagey", and when I went away to college in a big city, returning home was basically crap. It had some very small town attitudes which I wasn't keen on, and this, combined with some unpleasant school experiences (it wasn't all bad, but when it was, it was!), meant that I didn't want to live there anymore. I get why people like it, but it doesn't float my boat! Miners was a good pub though, as were all 4 pubs in "Coyle Aston".
But I'm a South Yorkshireman, and I like living in South Yorkshire!!😁

TC, not Dave Powell. York City in the League Cup in October 1971. Chris Topping is about to score York's 2nd to make it 2-2. Woody scored a superb winner in the last minute.
Remember Woody's winner very well outside of the right foot volley from about 35 yards travelling at about 110 mph straight into the the top corner in the Lane end (well that's how I remember it from the Kop but it was 50 years ago!)

Gil Reece was probably the first signing I can recall we ever made. We never were a signing club so to me it was big news. We seemed to rely on the constant stream of youngsters unearthed by Archie Clark.

A few years later things changed - Hemsley, Hope, Flynn, Powell, Colquhoun, Hockey, Dearden all arrived to form that promotion winning team.

Pubs in the Dronfield area - used to cross over the border from last orders in the Jordanthorpe to take the last orders in the Chequers.

Many a night in the Hearts of Oak with the proper landlord / landlady company of Fred and Joan. Horns Inn, Miners, Green Dragon, Blue Stoops, Talbot.

A misspent youth.

Between March 1961 (Len Allchurch) and Sept 1967 (Willie Carlin) we signed only two players from other league clubs. They were Gil Reece from Newport County in summer 1965 and Bill Punton from Norwich in Nov 1966.

gil was a great left winger and a revelation before he broke his leg think it was blackpool at the lane and wasnt quite the same player but was suprisingly good in the air and scored some vital goals for us in the promotion season know he used to drink in the three cranes on bank st

Yes, Blackpool it was. We signed Punton in the next few days. His debut was at Chelsea and Blades fans were shocked to see the new signing looking like a 60 year old!

Three Cranes on Bank Street.

Good nights starting at the 'dodgy' Cannon, Hen and Chickens onto Three Cranes and then Wig and Pen run by Wayne Chadwick - I think he's now got a takeaway in York.

A virtual pub crawl sums up my 2021.

Me too but I was on the John Street terrace .

From a high looping cross from Geoff Salmons if memory serves and when he struck it he was almost sideways on to the goal .

Like many on here , I saw Woody score some absolute belters but I can’t think of one better than that .

Top banter with Ron Barton in the Horns who was a Wendy.
His son Ron Barton Jnr has still got a season ticket in the Jolly Farmer.

Second photo. The shops not in view. The first shop is a second hand furniure place. I think it belongs to a Blade.

Further along in the 1960's there used to be a newsagents 'Hassocks' (?) I used to buy Jimmy Hill's Football Weekly from there. Still have them all - not sure if they worth owt.
Stuart West had the shop ,I went to school with him ,this was my area ,I did a paper round for Banhams from where the picture is taken ,my Dad lived in a bedsit on Sandford Grove Rd at the top of the steep jennel ,and my Nan worked at Abbey Glen round the back. I lived on Bannerdale but we knocked about round this area all the time .Our base was the carpet steps at the bottom of Woodseats Rd ,still good friends with all the lads and lasses 40/50 years later.

Three photos from Abbeydale Road, Nov 1988.
The first two show the corner with Marden Road, with work underway to remove my childhood playground- the "cliffs" as we called them. A fair few years earlier, the plot used to be occupied by a long, thin petrol station attended to by two white-coated chaps, with a shot from the Redex can ready at hand. Now it's a hand car wash.

The last photo below was taken from the bottom of Edgedale Road towards town. As long as I can remember, Lowe's has been there.
There also used to be a traditional police box set in that stone wall in front of the trees - one of scores dotted around the neighbourhoods of Sheffield.

Is that the Gatefield social club at the top of the second picture?

Yes, it is indeed. These photos taken about a year later (late 89). The house itself was was demolished and replaced by flats quite a few years ago.
But, almost unbelievably, the frontage was recently excavated and another block has been built fronting the road.
I was born and lived in Gatefield Road at the side. My parents didn't drink so we never went in the club.
