What exactly did he do wrong against Burnley ? I thought it was a faultless day for him.
Just didn't save the header for their goal, other than that I thought he had a good game, which is surprising, cos previous to that I was under the impression that he couldn't even catch Covid!?

Not be called Dean Henderson.
I thought as well as the two top drawer saves he did a good job sweeping up behind the defence.

Just watched highlights. And pretty much sums Ramsdale up. Yes I know we gave ball away unexpectedly but wasn't a great shot at all.

Championship keeper can understand letting that in but 18m prem keeper... Not so sure.

I think you have to keep picking him unless you are ok writing off 18m.

1. If you drop him, it gets National attention, brings more focus on him and probably writes off 50% minimum of our investment if not far more. You need him to play through this to either maintain his value for a move or to be the performer he needs to be
2. His confidence is going to be shaky. If the manager shows his hand that he's lost faith in him then this is only going to compound it. How do you build that confidence back once jettisoned?
3. There is nothing to suggest any of the other keepers are any good.
  • League One Wes lost his place to 38 year old Allan McGregor, which to me suggests he isn't all that. He didn't do anything against Burnley to suggest he's a decent bet.
  • Simon Moore didn't have the managers backing in the division below so he's not a candidate and might be injured still.
  • Michael Verrips' biggest claim is based on the fact bone of us have seen him. Hardly a ringing endorsement!
  • Jake Eastwood has just come back from injury after 45 minutes on loan in Scotland where he managed to be at fault for a goal and get injured. So it's no lt him stepping in.
  • Only this past week Marcus Dewhurst made some great saves for the U23s but then misjudged the flight of a corner giving Hull a goal.
  • Jordan Amissah's biggest claim to fame seems to be he has good height but he's 7th in the pecking order.

So all in all, apart from change for change's sake, unless Verrips is a hidden gem, then that's your lot.

I can appreciate the value of a good keeper. It's why Clough was happy to spend well on Shilton. I'm very surprised given our budget that Chris and Steve Bettis thought spending such a large portion on a keeper was a good investment. There must have been a fair few available for loan or permanent which could have been acquired from within the 5m bracket. I mentioned elsewhere but Etheridge went for 2m, Romero would have been available for loan. Mat Ryan has just gone on loan to Arsenal, he was signed originally for 7m.

To throw another name in there, I'm amazed after such a successful loan spell at Huddersfield that Danny Ward at 27bis content to sit in the stiffs at Leicester. It would have been excellent shithousing by us to get him, given he saved Forestieri's penalty and ran half the pitch to celebrate. Would have been a nice clip to play over and over 😁

To be honest, I wish we had gone for someone like Ben Foster and took the hit on wages. So what if it disrupted the wage structure, he's an established prem keeper with international experience.

Otherwise Randolph of Etheridge would both have been better options.

The beauty of hindsight.

this not wanting to take a hit on wages is gonna cost us our premier place weve paid the fees but were not prepared to pay the high salaries think its an important lesson for when we get back up

For foster's fee/wages we could've loan Hendo for another year with change left over... plus then we don't disrupt the wage structure, we can justify a loan as it's another club's wage structure we are adhering to... or if it's that much of a problem, we could negotiate to pay Hendo's loan as a flat fee and not contribute wages

Tbh I'm not even sure it's hindsight. There were plenty on here suggesting there were alternative options to Ramsdale out there even before he signed. The fee was always a big question mark for me.

I’m almost certain there was a thread about ramsdale signing in the summer, plenty on here suggested other keepers and some even predicted how bad a signing this may become. The be all and end all is if Rammers had cost half of what we got him for i can’t imagine people rightfully dig him out as much on here. The lad came here with a load of pressure on his back, effectively replacing England’s No2 and a large fee. Unfortunately, In our case that pressure hasn't made a diamond.

Reading back some of the comments in the Dean Henderson transfer rumou thread, sends chills to how wrong and right some have been.

Very poor from Henderson again letting the ball go through his legs for Liverpools 2d goal tonight.

Was Henderson’s effort to allow in Salah’s second goal for Liverpool vs Man U (through his legs), better or worse than Rammer’s effort yesterday?

Discuss.

Henderson needs to play regularly, completely different.

Aye a driven low shot from about the penalty spot while he’s still adjusting from the cut back is much more difficult to save than a weak as piss shot from outside the box that should be straight down your throat.

We could have sourced a capable keeper for a fraction of what we paid for Ramsdale.
I’ve stuck up for him on here but a the moment he’s shot.
He’s has flaws that needs working on he needs a good pre season

100% better. For a goalkeeper saving a shot from that close with your legs is really had. Ramsdales was a weak shot and he had plenty of time to get in the right position.

I will say Ramsdale is much better with his feet than Henderson. At least that's something 😂

The 40m spent on Brewster could have gone on some lower value gambles such as Toney from Peteborough, and then fill out the team with pros who would have let us consolidate, especially to replace the GK, LCB and to give some Attacking Flair to the team

£40Million on Brewster?!

Toney looks great.

In the championship - do you know who else looked great in the championship?

Brewster (and McBurnie).

I guess my point is we don’t know that Toney would necessarily have been any good at premier league level although I’d accept he cost Brentford less than half of what Brewster cost us.

I don't think Hendo wanted to come mate, otherwise I'd agree.

I feel we could've got 2 seasons out of Foster, thus being in a stronger position to negotiate with better targets if we'd had another two seasons top flight football under our belts.

If we get back up 😣

As above with GCH he didnt want to come he wanted to challenge for the No.1 keeper spot at Man U and look how that turned out. To honest I`m surprised he has not gone this transfer window on loan or other. Not exactly sure whats keeping him on the bench apart from money but I got the impression that was not his driving force he wants to be No.1 at ManU. Unless he knows something we dont, ie De Gea is going at end of season.

Easy to say in hindsight, but Ramsdale was just an unnecessary gamble on potential. And a huge sum of money, eating up budget and leaving glaring shortcomings in our midfield.

He might turn out great and be out number 1 for years to come, but when we were still trying to establish ourselves a perennial Premier League side - a safe pair of hands for the short term would have been infinitely better.

Based on this season I'd wager we'd be on more points with ANY keeper out of the top 2 (maybe 3) leagues. Whilst we don't have a lot, the lad hasn't won us any points this year and has certainly cost us some.

Hope he turns a corner, gets some confidence and shows the form which got him POTY at Bournemouth last season but needs to happen sooner rather than later.
