Why I think VAR is part of the reason why we conceding so many goals

I get it, when you think about it... how can VAR be part of the problem?

I'll try explain.

We blame our players not getting stuck in, for not making crunching tackles.

We made a few crunching tackles against Bristol Rovers which I hadn't seen in recent games in the prem. Everyone's having a go at our midfielders for not putting a tackle in... but would you blame them when VAR looks at every aspect of a foul to see if there's a red card in it? For example, the Lundstram red wasn't a sending off, but VAR reviewed it after watching multiple replays and decided that even though he got the ball first, he got the player.

The players seemingly went into the BR game without the worry of VAR overturning a yellow card and turning it into a red card. Tackles seem worse in slow motion, when zoomed in... when replayed over and over.

VAR was in place last season however i do think our momentum and confidence played a big part in why we didn't concede as much... because we played attacking football. This season we are playing far from attacking football, confidence is at rock bottom and momentum is non existent. We are under threat nearly during every second of the game.

I saw someone in the shoutbox during the game say "isn't it refreshing seeing these tackles?" - i agreed, and the difference between the Bristol Rovers game and every other game we've played this season? There was no VAR in the BR game.

I think it’s part of a wider issue, in that as well as VAR the lack of crowds takes out the intensity. So the season is glorified friendlies where the technical side predominates. Not saying we don’t have technically able players, but without the depth in squad and less passion, it does us no favours.

And no JOC.

Its been a problem for the last 10 years especially in the PL where you are not allowed to tackle or be a milli second late when going for the ball. I suppose VAR just compounds the issue

I don't like VAR but I think a lot of the problem is caused by the play acting in the Premier league. How often do players go down holding a part of their body that has barely been touched and let out a little yelp at the same time. I don't think there was any of that in the Bristol Rovers match and the Crawley v Leeds match was a notable for it's honesty.

I think its more to do with Premier league players' reactions and slow motion replays which make every contact appear far worse and pre meditated than they really are.

Yes I agree about the play acting and screaming when tackled. A good example was in the Arsenal v Newcastle match when Longstaff screamed and went down as though he'd been shot after the young Arsenal lad tackled him. Ref reacted to it and brandished the red card. Fortunately VAR reviewed it and the ref changed it to yellow. Longstaff gets up, clearly not bothered about his embarrassing antics. For me this is VARs only redeeming feature.

It did with Basham at Norwich
But failed with Egan at Villa and Luiz at Arsenal and probably a couple more Ive forgotten about
Think what I’m trying to say is... VAR is shit. Another nail in the coffin for the dynamic and passion filled games fans used to love.

It's an interesting theory.

I agree on the tackling thing to a point, but this has been happening well before VAR. You just can't tackle any more.

The main reason we arent keeping clean sheets is that we aren't picking up our men and aren't competing well in challenges.
Both of these things happened in our goals against on Sat and there was no VAR.

We tackled alot and conceded little last season and VAR was only horrendous for goal decisions If I remember correctly. We're just properly wank this season/year due to our lack of confidence and mostly awful recruitment IMO.

Maybe Prem players move more quickly than BR so making hefty tackles more difficult ?

True. And you very rarely see the cheaters getting a yellow card for diving these days. Which means they are more likely to try it.

That's another thing I don't understand. One replay usually confirms they've dived. They should get 2 yellows for a yelp and a dive ;)

I've thought this ever since last season. One of the arguments to try and keep VAR in place after it was getting pelters was that it could stop the kind of diving everyone hates (even when their own team do it). Thing is it hasnt because though VAR may get rid of the worse of it, there's no discouragement attached so you still get speculative screamers holding their shins after phantom amputations because someone came within a foot of them.

They should put in a new rule. Check the foul, see if its legit etc and if not then check the reaction. Straight red for being a tit rule.

Admittedly we'd probably get done over by that rule too. When we dive, its tragic.

Very true. I said last season they should be tougher on players playing up on a tackle and yellow them for it and instead of quietly putting down "booked for simulation" the stadium announcer should let everyone know "so and so has been booked for diving" personally I would prefer "booked for cheating/acting like a bitch" but I can't see that happening.

See how many times they throw themselves about once that becomes the consequence. The referees falling for it is arguably equally as laughable, the noises some of these players make when they go down is cringey.

Diving has been getting worse and worse for years and I think pundits have to take a lot of the blame. Often saying "he's won a foul there" or defending a player for going down because the "slightest knock can trip you when you're running at full speed." Pundits have made it more acceptable, they and the rest of the media should call it out more and show it in a negative light.

I have a much loved DVD of 500 Great Premier League Goals, I like to watch all the ones from the 90s and count the amount of times a modern player would have gone down to get the free kick instead of trying to carry on their run.
