My first visit to Wembley was the Stoke v Chelsea League Cup final which meant I missed the abandoned game at Highfield Road. I was at Victoria ground the week after to watch the 2-2 draw. Banks didnt play in the match at Victoria ground. I think he picked up an injury in the League Cup final.

Didn’t know you were at that game Silent, that League Cup is the only trophy they’ve ever, ever won and they still go on about it regularly, even though hardly any Stokies I know were there, so you’ve experienced something they haven’t. I had my fingers crossed throughout the 2011 Cup Final, and the Potters didn’t let me down 🙂

A few photos around Headford/Hodgson streets. Feb 1985.

Photos 3 & 4 what a neat practical looking building, almost elegant. Would think, originally was a school. Personally would have thought it was one that should have been saved. Oh! I know all about progress and it's cheaper to demolish than refurbish, but.
Excellent pictures as per, have you any idea which school it was, please.

The good news, XM657, is that the building is still there, renovated, 👍 but I'm not sure as what.
It used to be St Silas school. There's one of many threads about it here....

Thanks for the info, just spent an hour and a half reading.
Fascinating, its almost incomprehensible how life has changed over the last 40/50 years.

yeah it snowed as we got about 10 miles from oxford 4 of us on the side terrace most of the bolton game was running battles between blades and bolton fans hodgys last game if i remember right think we were 1 up before hodgy made mistakes for both boltons goals dont think he played another first team game after that

Yes, it was Hodgy's last league game as well as Tudor's (he scored in the opening minutes of the match). Both played for the 1st team once more which was the friendly match at Saltergate (Tom Fenoughty scored the only goal of the game) a week later (FA Cup 4th round day)

Bert also at the Bolton game.
He does indeed remember the fighting. Hardly surprising as we were on their end.

Yes , not only mistakes for both goals but seemed to spend half the match scrambling around the penalty area trying to retrieve balls he’d dropped . A sad way to end such a great career for us .

Then came John Harris’s masterful triple signing of Hope , Hockey and to a lesser extent David Ford and the rest is history .

they were a nasty lot bolton fans most of them were bikers in leathers we had about half and half in that era greasers and crombie clad skinheads and john harris bringing in hockey was a masterstroke and got us promoted although we did lose john tudor who was a great striker for us

It was a double bonus to get Hockey AND John Hope. (David Ford was a bit - ???)
Hodgy was a great keeper but to be honest - a bit on the short side.
To see John Hope cathing crosses and corners easily in the Oxford game was brilliant 😀

Yes, you are right Harrisblade Hodgy was on the short side , but then so were most people , sixty years ago, compared to today. Yes, I take your point, though, he was 5ft 9 in (1.75 metres). Around the same time was Eddie Hopkinson (Bolton and England ) even shorter at 5ft 8ins, as was our Joe , which was even more surprising for a centre half.

hodgy although on the short side was a fantastic keeper and would have had far more england caps if ron springett hadnt been around the same time remember he always booted the ball in to the kop when teams came out his autobiography is a great read as well one or two facts in the book are slightly wrong including him saying we played west ham on the last day of the season 1968 lol

Much more than one or two wrong! It is a shame that the ghostwriter (a Stoke fan) didnt check the facts properly. In the opening chapter Hodgy went into great detail describing a goal scored by George Best at Bramall Lane in October 1967. In fact the scorers for Man U in their 3-0 win against us was Aston, Law and Kidd. The only goal scored by George Best at Bramall Lane was in December 1964 (also scored in TC's testimonial).

yeah remember that 3 - 0 defeat about 10k manure fans on the kop

There was a photo of a Blade with blood pouring from his head after a brick had hit his head
yeah can remember that as well man utd and leeds in 74 were the only fans that took the shoreham end in league or cup matches just too many of em and were usually in the ground 2 hours before kick off lol

There are two future Blades in this pic. One's pretty easy, the other's a bit more difficult:
