I'm not trying to argue that Birch wasn't talking about SOD. I'm just trying to argue that it could have actually been interpreted many different ways. Much has been said about the candidates, mostly by the fans and the press, and the majority of it has been speculation. You're the one trying to argue for something you see as fact that is actually open for debate.

This isn't a sad day:

'Ladies and gentleman I present the new manager of Sheffield United, Sam Ellis!' That would've been a sad day.

'Ladies and gentleman I present the new manager of Sheffield United, Carlton Palmer!' That would've been a suicidal day.

Fact is, Birch gave an interview in which he gave a very broad description of the type of manager the club were looking for. It would fit S O'D, it would fit Adams, it would fit several others. Some threw all their chips on S O'D when there was little evidence that he was nailed on.

For whatever reason we couldn't land him and ended up with Adams.

Someone who will be enthusiastic about the job .
Someone who has worked in the NPC before.
Must get the team playing in a way that will encourage fans to attend and enjoy what they are seeing.
A record of targeting players in the lower leagues and making a successful transition to our level.

There was also a comment about working with the academy but I don't have it to hand.

I aint daft and I won;t argue black is white. I think we all agree there is a good chance Birchy wanted SOD. I am 99% certain we talked to SOD, cannot prove it obviously. Therefore I am bitterly disappointed we end up with Blackie mark 2 and one of purest long ball men you could possibly wish to meet.

Because it was right for the time, mate. It's had it's day. Bassett, however, would still play it now. For fuck sake Dinosaur Dave, Dinosaur Bassett. He took us from being a skint third division club who couldn't pay its way to being a skint top flight club who couldn't pay its way. For 2 years Unitedites turned up at the Lane knowing we would probably win, and usually did, and even if it was hoof, we won games and got promotions. He kept us in the top flight for 4 years where we put a lot of noses out of joint and punched well above our weight considering some of the boardroom shenanighans that went on.

I spent yesterday evening with a fully qualified professional coach who played at the top level. As you will imagine, we spent the evening discussing the situation at the Lane. His take on Adams is entirely different to yours. I know whose opinion carries more weight.

Whether SOD walked out before he was offered owt or whether he was offered it and said no, I need to bring em all with me, I don't know, but I am 100% certain we talked to SOD and whilst we'll never know, my take on it is that McCabe wouldn't push the boat out. Fair enough, its up to him and SOD should be able to compromise if he wants the job. Ultinmately, I am in a state of shock that we have Adams and Cork in charge at the end of it all when it is considered what Birchy has said.
