A very sad day for all Blades

And bring in Bob Booker and Cork instead of piggies Ellis and Smith, real sad day.

Swap Lord Bob of Booker for Sam Ellis? Now that, sir, is a stroke of genius. Teamed up with Alan Alan Cork and it's divine inspiration. As opposed to swine perspiration.

Get Harry in as director of football, Bob and Corky on the coaching staff, and what about Johnny Gannon to work with the kids?
Gotta chuckle about the pretence of changing the culture of the club.
Still, when the talks with SOD broke down, it was always going to be the easy choice.
But we must be bonkers if we're paying £150,000 compo to a a club paying its boss £65,000.

i've never made or had a pretence about changing the culture at United. I loved the Bassett and Warnock days of blood and thunder all passion football more then any other time and would love to see to return to the lane tomorrow.
It got us to the top division twice and I think it would again, look at Stoke for a good example.

Standard that we pay off the rest of his Vale contract, which would amount to that. Surely a bargain for your 2nd choice?

I see. How did that work with Speed then?
Like I said, absolutely bonkers, but they were probably in complete panic mode and would agree to anything.

I'm sure you didn't - but the board of SUFC did.

Not sure about how it's calculated, that wouldn't tie up with what we got for Speed but even if MA is now on 4 times his current salary, it's probably only half of what Speed was on.

The club did though, Birch said he wanted to change this and move us into a progressive football club. I hope Adams is the man to do this, lets just hope for a Hollowayesq change of philosophy.

Speed was on about 275k i think, so Micky has got a comparable salary if reports are to be believed.

Exactly Bob, as I've been discussing with the Blackpool fans this morning. Holloway's appointment was greeted with the same, if not worse, luke warm reception 18 months ago and to be fair, his perceived style of football / record was no better than MA's.

Of course Blackpool's success (still pains me !!) is the exception not the norm but it shows that if you get the right system, the right philosophy and things just click into place, that's half the battle won.

Lets hope for a Bassetesque escape from relegation first.

I can't say the removal of Carver and installation of Cork is a positive move for the "style".

He basically issued a statement saying we want SOD.

What amazes me about all the stick is that when I say Birchy all but mentioned he wanted SOD, it's as if I'm trying to argue that the world is flat.

These are two very different things. Please acknowledge that you realise this or give us reasons to think that you're not just an(other) attention-seeking drama queen who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Here is a list of all available managers http://www.leaguemanagers.com/index.html About halfway down there is a drop down menu. Aside from the odd candidate who would never touch us with a barge pole - O'Neill - not many credible options out there are there? Looking at other clubs, who were we realistically going to attract?

Very few options and Mickey Adams is probably the pick of the bunch. I want better quality football but that has to wait. I'll take scrappy 1-0 wins til the end of the season at the moment.

It's a sad day for all Blades who:

Value proper football;

Realised that here was a chance to change the ethos of our club;

Raged at the timid acquiescence that says SUFC aren't allowed to play football - that's for other clubs and other fans - we are not worthy of it;

Wanted an end to Blood and Thunder, battling, kick it long, kick it hard, kick it high, in your face, we're not good enough to play so we'll try hard, alehouse, Sunday League, aimless, turgid, neck-aching, mind-numbing, Neanderthal, agricultural, Nick Montgomerying, Dinosaur Bassetting, crowd-dropping, image-destroying, parochial, kick and rush, punt it up and chase it, awful bloody awful, HOOFBALL!

Well you've got your Dinosaur Bassett apprentice Micky the Hoof and his Hoofy Gang ally Cork. Incredibly some of you want the founder of hoofball, Dinosaur Dave, back to complete the package.

Here's to more of more of the same: Battling Blades, get stuck in, gerritupfield, the ball's a hand grenade, Monty first on the teamsheet, utter, complete, copper-bottomed garbage.

Hoofy is dead: Long live Micky the Hoof!

I despair.

Happy New Year.

For goodness sake, of course we spoke to SOD first, that is bloody obvious.
Those talks broke down and we moved on to our second or third or fourth choices.
I'd suspect SOD scared the hell out of McCabe and it subsequently fizzled out with us looking a bit daft.
So it's back to the future instead.

This is what I'm pinning my hopes on.

I could be completely wrong about Adams and he could turn out to be a fantastic breath of fresh air. The Vale team he brought to the Lane were excellent and hopefully he'll stick to those principles rather than returning to hoofball.

The difference being that Port Vale are genuinely disappointed to lose Adams and will struggle to replace him with a manager with a comparable record.
While we were lucky enough to receive compensation for a failing manager, avoid paying up his 3 year contract and instead appoint an experienced, proven manager with a track record of success. We fell on our feet for once!

Not sure why United needed to offer Adams quadruple his salary if that part is true.
Surely he would have taken the job anyway without a huge financial incentive to do so.
I would have offered him a 2 year contract (+ 1 further year option), double his money and big bonuses for keeping us up then getting us promoted.

What?!!
We were lucky to receive compo for a manager on a three-year contract and fell on our feet by paying near enough the same amount for a manager with an outstanding contract half as long on a wage of £65,000?
Yer bonkers pal.

I'd suspect SOD scared the hell out of McCabe and it subsequently fizzled out with us looking a bit daft.

As long as you don't suppose that we all accept that as the truth, I have no problem with that. I'd suspect he either wanted what we couldn't offer him, or he just didn't want to leave a place where he is revered to come to a place where we welcome our new managers with threads like this.

Yosser, I'm pretty sure McCabe couldn't offer what he wanted - he'd be terrified by a bloke who had his own clear ideas about how to play the game and how to achieve that.
And this has got nothing to do with 'welcoming new managers'. It's about remembering what the board said and what the board has done.

That's one way to look at it. Here's another. We've swapped one manager without experience who wasn't performing as well as we'd hoped, for another who has the experience, at no extra cost. In fact if anything we've probably saved money. Bonkers? I doubt it.

while I agree with the last line, the first line of you post is pure speculation.

As I said, you or I don't know what happened. You assume one thing, I'm a little more open minded. But I'll tell you something, given the amount of investment in the Rovers squad, I don't think O'Driscoll is one that demands things and gets what he wants.

OK, let's spell it out.
We had a manager on £250,000 a year on a three-year contract.
Port Vale had a manager on £65,000 a year with a year and a bit on his contract.
We get about a year's compo, Port Vale get well over two years.
Despite the fact that Port Vale's manager would have very easily walked from there to Bramall Lane.
Just as with the whole management process, a complete set of clueless amateurs.

We were lucky that anybody was willing to pay a penny compensation for Speed given his appalling track record. If he hadn't walked we'd be looking at sacking him about now and paying him the £1M+ in wages left on his contract. The way I see that deal we're at least £1.5M to the good.

I'd rather have Adams for £150K than Sean "I wouldn't touch Sheffield United with a shitty stick" O'Driscoll for £1M? Now that would have been bonkers...pal!

Can't argue with much of that.
