A Strange Mixture

In my opinion it’s been a mixture of reasons that we find ourselves bottom after 8 games

1) injuries - having Jack, John, and Lys out, is a big miss however you dress it up, the spine of the team at the start of last season all missing is bound to have an effect

2) Lack of crowd - say what you what but we miss this massively, I think we’re the team that depend on it most in this league or if not certainly in the top 3

3) Fixtures - it’s been a tough start, I’d have expected more from Fulham and Leeds at home and villa away but it’s fine margins, Lunny misses a pen etc etc

I genuinely think we will stay up, but my problem is currently is that’s because I’m attributing it towards teams being WORSE than us, not us being BETTER than other teams

You make some fair points.

You forgot our change of keeper, I think our Ramsdale is looking like George Long at present. Henderson wouldnt have let in the second goal today.

The biggest problem is confidence. We have none at present. The only way it will come back is winning matches fast.

The injuries have hit us hard, no doubt, but we don't seem to have recruited any decent replacements. Robinson and Osborn are a huge drop off in quality from JOC and Fleck. Mousset is injury prone and unfit, and after goalkeeper was the most important signing in the summer. I'm not writing off Brewster yet, but he has struggled to make an impact.

We've been lucky with injuries over the last few season. We've lost one first team player, one player who was poor and lost his first team place and a guy who would be on the bench.

Other teams have been hit harder (Liverpool have 1 fit CB, Man City have no fit strikers) and we looked generally poor with these players after lockdown.

It's not like we've had an injury crisis. Football teams expect to get injuries. It's why you have a squad. We have little strength in depth for a range of reasons.

It's early days of course, but all those teams you mention will be thinking they are better than us, bias is a natural thing. I have several neutral mates who are struggling to give me reasons why we will stay up.

Over the course of the season time will tell, I hope we will do better than this. We did last season with almost the same team. The biggest issue is confidence. You get on a bad (or good) run and its a habbit. It's getting out of the not scoring and losing habbit that is very hard. I hope youre right and there are 3 worse teams than us over 38 games.

Injuries are one thing but our reaction to these problems has been fucking diabolical:

• Not replacing JOC when we still had one spare loan slot available and more than enough time to replace him.
• Keeping Lunny on the books and in the first team but not seeking someone to replace him.
• Letting Luke Freeman go out without having a replacement in.

Lack of crowd is the same for everyone. I expect our players to have the mental strength to deal with that by now.

Fixtures? It is the Premier League every fixture you are up against international or world class players. Exactly the same as last season.

For CW/AK It must feel like that game you played as kids called Ker Plonk, where you had these plastic tooth picks that you stuck through holes in a jar that you filled with marbles and then you took out the tooth picks one by one until finally the whole thing collapsed.

Tonight after the final whistle it must have felt like it' has all finally collapsed for some fans as well ......


Load of cobblers, of course I don't think were going to win the league this year, but as for the rest, well it's still wide open ......
