Just reported on look north. Not seen owt on here so sorry if this has already been posted

He's stepping down from the role of football club chairman... as he said he wanted to do in the Q&As.

I assume it's come from digestion of the accounts/annual report, in which Kevin states:

As many members and supporters of the Blades will be aware I have been contemplating stepping down as Chairman of both the Company and Club for some time. Indeed were it not for the trauma created by our unjust religation from the Premiership in 2007 then handling (sic) over the reigns would have occurred a few years ago. It is my intention to step down as Chairman of Sheffield United FC coincidental to the forthcoming Annual General Meeting of Sheffield United plc. The time for change is appropriate for all the right reasons.

He said back in the very first Q&A that he wanted to do this, he also said when Trevor Birch came in, that he was to be the man on the ground running things so to speak.

It's a real shame that, given both enormous effort and promise, he leaves us in pretty much the same state that he found us.

He's been very well meaning and unlucky. He's also been responsible for some very poor decisions.

I'd credit him with bringing affordable football to families, tidying the ground and the academy.

I'd hold him responsible for appointing Bryan Robson (spending more money in the championship than in the premiership), and tying us heavily into property right at the peak of a property super bubble.

Overall I'd say thanks for the effort, but stick to non footballing business.

Steer been mentioned as replacement but he's been Deputy Chairman for a while and I doubt it's a long-term appointment.

People are panicking that McCabe is going to pull all his money out of the club. This isn't the case. He's stated in the past that he isn't here enough to have the hands on role required of a football club Chairman and that he wants to take a back seat.

The reason it's come out like this is because it's in the Annual Report as stated to coincide with the AGM on 18th December.

It came as a shock to me. I was just sat waiting for the weather forecast, didn't expect that to come at the end at all. Apparently he's on Radio Sheffield in the morning (I'm not sure if they mentioned the time?).

Sorry to see him go in many ways, despite his many mistakes (of which he's made many, but he is, after all "only human"), I always thought he had the club's best interests at heart. But at the same time I think he's maybe made the right decision at the right time. Only time will tell.

hes being interviewed on toby foster in the morning - to be repeated on FH. strikes me its his last bullet dodge. £18m losses is going to take some explaining

The relevant bit of the transcript from April's Q&A can be found here:

KM: I mean you know, it is a personal question and yeah, I’d like to step out of the chair, I’ve said this the last two or three seasons and you know bizarrely if it were not for the Carlos Tevez affair and that very unjust relegation, I’d have probably stepped down as chairman for our first season back in the Premiership. The Tevez affair was one where, you know, someone was gonna fight like sting for Sheffield United, we’re not a club that’s trodden on any more. You know, were a proud club that stands for it’s rights. So, that made me stand for longer than I would have wished. Yeah, I do want to step down, but hey, stepping down makes no difference, if I put my hand up and say I still can’t avoid being the owner, if you are an owner, you can’t relieve yourself of responsibilities.

The ownership part of that dialogue Linz, will be the next bit he looks to relinquish. The moving of debt from the football is another step towards selling the club. I expect Mr Birch to be in many meetings across the globe in the next couple of years!

Can I just make the point, that unless we have any large investors or a takeover, Kevin McCabe will still be the ultimate controlling party and therefore isn't just jetting off into the distance.

It's merely declaring an interest in passing on the reigns for the FC chairmanship at the moment.

That doesn't mean he's rolling up the the AGM and washing his hands of SUFC?

That's easy for you to say, in your role as club lackey, but consider this.....

A lot of people on this board are very worried about the state the club is in, but sadly, few have the vision to see what's wrong and know what needs to be done.

Actually, when I say few, I mean just len. He's been under increasing pressure to step up at the AGM and sort things out, though he has been reluctant to commit so far.

McCabe must know that he's met his match and has thrown in the towel early and who can blame the multi-millionaire businessman? It's not every day he'll have come across len's calibre of keyboard warriordom.

You had me going for a few seconds there :)

A couple of years?........................ Yikes...........................Could be all over by then!

He's left the club virtually debt free and some are wanting an explanation for this?

Not being funny guys, what do you actually want? Transparent or clouded deception... Your choice

Well I say thank you Kevin. My feeling is that he has done well compared to some of our previous so called chairmen. I also think he will try and hand over properly rather than just get out of dodge. We shall see.

Well we knew this for a while and well done to him for his work as Chairman.

I thought he'd stepped down as football club chairman a while ago. Does that mean Trevor Birch, Chief Executive will become Trevor Birch, chairman.

Perhaps someone can advise the difference between Chief Exec and Chairman

McCabe is a legend and truly nice guy. I wish him the best in whatever role he takes on.

Apology accepted! ;)

We obviously saw the same news item and rushed to the laptop/PC at ther same time. I'd forgotten his previous stated intention and I wish him well and thank him for everything he has achieved and has tried to achieve.

Cheers Mr Mac

Clear of "external" debt. Not at all concerned about what "internal" debt might be? Showing concern isn't a crime.

He's left us about where he found us. In todays climate not a bad thing, but a million miles from legendary status.

Chief Exec has two words Chairman only one. :D

It majority shareholder thats #1. hope that helps Swiss !

It does look as though McCabe is preparin to fook off, but everybody knows he wants out ! .......... they do don't they ?
Oh how I bet he wishes he'd never employed 'our terry' and f10pp0.......but we all make mistakes.

Be a shame if he were to leave altogether, he's done everything he's done with the best intentions for SUFC and we've seen a lot of teams slide past us during his tenure. Gave me 2 of my best seasons as a Blades fan in 02/03 and again in the promotion year so have to say a big thanks, shame the intentions couldn't quite be turned into reality.

He's hoping whoever he hands the reigns over to can steer us back on course.

In praise of him he gave us all dreams, expectations and ambition, some realised. On the negative side we are still a mediocre championship side with no working capital to invest in the team and possibly our soul sold to the corporate bond market.

McCabe probably thinks that he can get a decent price for his shares with these people offering 15 quid a pop

Got to echo that, might not have always made the best decisions but good luck in the future.

Sometimes the nice guy should win.

Funny because I think he is a liar and a thief. Just my opinion though. Whatever happens to the club McCabe won't go poor. All this talk about the millions he has ploughed in is just that. He hasn't spent a bean of his own cash and has managed to ringfence his own interests hence, when the going gets a bit rough and just before the scales fall from some peoples eye, Superblade is off into the sunset.
