Hypothetical question about CW

I can’t think of a hypothetical club/situation. It would have to be a PL club between now and May. So which one? Southampton is the only one that springs to mind and he’s got connections there as he played for them. Unlikely though.

Much more likely he takes us down and moves to a sleeping giant in the championship, of which there are many and if there’s proper money who knows.

Personally if we do go down I’d be amazed if he stays. Hopefully wrong on both counts.

Of course he’ll leave here when he runs everything from new kit selection to the food we eat, and swap it for a head coach position, where most managers last 3 months unless they’re Klopp or pep?

We know we've had a bad start, we know we've had some rotten luck, we know the upcoming fixtures look tricky...

There's every chance we could be rock bottom for a good while yet. If this turns out to be the case, and a club elsewhere in the league sacks their manager and courts a replacement in Chris Wilder, do we think he would be tempted to jump ship?

I think it's a serious possibility. There's now the start of rumblings between himself and the Board over transfer strategy. He's never had a single relegation on his CV, and his stock has never been higher. He also might not particularly enjoy the bitter taste of having led his boyhood club back down to the Championship and facing his family and pals etc. Strikes me as a very proud man does our Chris and these things could well be factors if his head is turned mid-season. If he has any aspirations of managing higher up the table, of managing his country even, then he most likely won't ever have a better opportunity to move up the managerial ladder. Surely there will be people in his inner circle reminding him of this.

aww not this again.

Quite frankly I’d rather discuss Arsenal's crazy tactic of passing the ball around in their penalty area. I trust we will profit from this at the weekend.

Depends if he feels valued and/or backed by the board. Wilder isn't a man who'll allow his career to stagnate.

Would have to be a serious falling out at board level, or life changing cash to see him leave.

First thing is, I don’t think we’d be having this conversation if we hadn’t lost our first 3 games.

Second thing is: I think Wilder is a true Blade through and through. While ever there’s a chance we can keep progressing, he’ll want to be here. I don’t know the guy, but I saw him debut for us and I think I know what it means to him to manage this club. It’s everything to the lad. And no amount of money or stardom could mean more.

Third thing is: if he sees his own personal credibility and reputation being eroded and damaged by being here, he will need to consider his options. I wouldn’t blame him one iota for that.

He’s a very decent human being with the club’s best interest at heart. If he ever gets to a point where he feels he can’t help any further or that the clubs best future is one without him, he’ll go. That will be a sad day. But it will happen eventually.

He doesn’t strike me at all as putting his own career interests before the club he loves. But depending on circumstances, that’s a decision he may have to make at some point, and if and when he does I’ll be understanding of that.

I hope it’s many years into the future. And I think it will be. He’s earned enough respect in the game already for even our closest rivals to accept that he’s a decent bloke doing a very good job.

All credit to him. And if at some point in the future he needs to go elsewhere then so be it. But it won’t be for want of trying here.

The bloke is a legend imo. Enjoy it while we can.

Whilst not wishing to stifle discussion I find it hard to understand such a negative approach and I do realise you are not by yourself.
A more positive approach I feel would be more productive, let's hope CWAK are of a different disposition.
I also believe most Blades supporters/fans are aware of the pit falls of United's plight
Blades have been here before, nowt new, Have Faith and 'Always look on the bright side of Life'. :)

We're not going to sack him, none of the big 6 are going to poach him and he's not going to leave, this season, next season or for the foreseeable future.

If we were about to go down, and he jumped ship, and we went into the Championship managerless, he’d become HERO to ZERO like tha’s never known. Shoes off in car park every home match for next 25 years.

he is viewed akin to Dyche and Howe, the former wouldn't get a sniff at the top 10 EPL clubs, the latter is unemployed currently and i can't see him getting a decent EPL job soon... i've said it once and i will say it again...

While we are Premier League the only job Wilder will go for is the Man Utd job, that happening would require a lot of dominos falling in to place at Man Utd, including sacking Ed/the Glazers... ie it will probably never happen... plus Poch will be in the mix long before CW is.

a huge if, but if Leicester got rid of Rodgers maybe Wilder could have a sniff... but i'd imagine another manager will be favoured instead.

Think about it, CW is the kind of manager for a top to bottom club restructuring, the highest he has done this is at L1 level with us, every club he has worked at he has overhauled with his own players, I just cannot see that happening at the elite level... imagine benching 300k pw prima donnas or selling off the family jewels for hard graft no shit players... mayhem. Tell you what Barca could do with him at the moment though!

What has Wilder ever asked for and not got?

New training ground ✔
New players ✔
Steve Bettis back ✔
Sander Berge ✔
Smashed transfer record multiple times ✔
Extended budget last year for McBurnie ✔
New contracts for existing players ✔
Several new contracts ✔

He now wants a striker & cover for O’Connell, which it looks like he’s going to get too.

I don’t know what Wilder could moan about, 1-11 that’s his team out there adopting his strategy. It’s not the boards, they clearly allow Wilder to run the football side how he sees fit.

I wish people would stop blaming the board for where we are or worrying that Wilder could get fed up, why would he? He’s been a manager for a long time and with that he will have dealt with situations like this before and not ducked out of it.

We haven’t had the rub of the green but we’ll get it right and the board will back Wilder.

So a club would sack their manager because they’re close to the bottom of the league, then their next move would be to appoint the manager who is currently managing the club at the bottom of the table.

From the bits I hear from PA, for the last three years he’s been at odds with the board, constantly pushing for more funds. That’s his job - to persuade them to buy players.
I see no difference now.
In any work situation it is possible to have arguments with your Manager / Owner about buying new equipment, staff training, bonus payments etc., without a punch up, falling out and quitting.
Wilder wants them to give him money for players, they will sit down and discuss it, it might get a little heated, that’s business.

A few people mentioned a lack of suitable PL clubs.

Southampton could well pull the trigger if their poor form continues. West Ham and Fulham will do their annual manager change at some point no doubt. The likes of Palace and Leicester could drop off drastically again as they did last season. Newcastle also love a change of manager and are the kind of historic club with a passionate fanbase that might appeal to Chris.

But imagine this scenario... City continue to underperform and sack Guardiola, they decide to poach Bielsa, the most lauded manager in the PL this season, from high flying Leeds United. Oh the irony of CW joining the long list of Blades greats to move to Elland Road when he even mentioned it pre-match at the weekend. Anybody think he wouldn't be tempted to leave us in the bottom three and frustrations with the board to a Leeds United team (with players already accustomed to high intensity training and innovative tactics) sitting pretty in the Europa League places? ... I'm not so sure.

We’re rooted to the bottom, yet someone else is interested in him?
Why?

There'd be obvious pragmatism and context to someone pursuing him for a job. And he has a lot of great stuff on his CV. Mourinho hasn't achieved jack all for years yet his previous achievements still count in his favour.

Fuck him off and his favourite, Billy Sharp.
I mean, what have they ever done for us?

As I said, this thread was not about wanting him to go. Quite the opposite!

He'd be a unfashionable manager who took a team to top 6 in his first half a season before spending £60 Million to put them on the bottom of the league.
I can't see there being lots of interest, nor can I see a guy who said only this week that he wants to be here for a very long time looking to jump ship at the first sign of trouble.

Unless something goes distinctly wrong at the top, He's going to be here until we get relegated and I guess he'd want to have a shot of coming straight back up. If that failed and there were issues at the top, he might leave.

I have worried about this in the past but not anymore the more time I have thought about it.

Say Wilder is on 35K a week approx. at a guess. Some clubs could probably double or triple those wages like West Ham if they really wanted him. But he is potentially on borrowed time as soon as he makes that move, there is so much out of his control and he knows he will have 6 months max to show results. If it doesn't work out for him he could then end up on the Championship managerial merry go round on similar or less money to what he is on currently. In his current situation he knows realistically it would take 2-3 poor seasons before The Board would even remotely consider getting rid of him (say relegation this season plus flirting with relegation again in the Championship). In that time he could have earnt over £5million managing his boyhood club and cementing himself as a legend here.

The only way he leaves is if someone like Tottenham or Man united go against their regular appetite for a young foreign manager.

That's quite a pessimistic and defeatist outlook for someone to have about their own abilities. I don't think Chris strikes me as the kind of man who takes the cautious and safe approach to anything! He has bags and bags of self belief, something he'd need to distinctly be lacking in should you be right in your estimation.
