We know we've had a bad start, we know we've had some rotten luck, we know the upcoming fixtures look tricky...

There's every chance we could be rock bottom for a good while yet. If this turns out to be the case, and a club elsewhere in the league sacks their manager and courts a replacement in Chris Wilder, do we think he would be tempted to jump ship?

I think it's a serious possibility. There's now the start of rumblings between himself and the Board over transfer strategy. He's never had a single relegation on his CV, and his stock has never been higher. He also might not particularly enjoy the bitter taste of having led his boyhood club back down to the Championship and facing his family and pals etc. Strikes me as a very proud man does our Chris and these things could well be factors if his head is turned mid-season. If he has any aspirations of managing higher up the table, of managing his country even, then he most likely won't ever have a better opportunity to move up the managerial ladder. Surely there will be people in his inner circle reminding him of this.

It’s hypothetically questioning his integrity

Is it? If he feels hard done by in terms of being backed by the board, and he's promised opportunities elsewhere to improve his career trajectory, he might well feel justified in serving his self interest. Plus if he gets any whiff of all the moans and groans around how the team is doing and people questioning his ability (it's already started on this forum!) then that might piss him off a little more as well.

To be clear, this thread isn't about questioning our manager. Quite the opposite. I'm recognising his value, because other clubs will and he himself will value his own ability as a top manager.

Until his recent body language & edginess in press conferences, I would have said no way.
Eventually he has to think of number 1. The lack of ambition that seems to blight us every time we are in the top flight will eventually lower his stock so Blade or no Blade i wouldn't be surprised.

In the past 2 seasons, he has been LMA Manager of the Season and then, LMA Manager of the Season Runner-up.

In that context, the Board's apparent unwillingness to get in the "help up top" that he has been saying we need in interviews since June, will surely be disappointing for him.

It is notable too that as this striker saga has dragged on, Wilder has moved from saying "we're working hard to get players/strikers/help up top, through the door" to "Its up to the Board" or "I've told the Board who I want".

Albeit that the figures are different because of the size of the TV money, our approach, relative to the rest of the division, is still very 'old style' Sheffield United. And if the club is not going to back this manager, it surely never will.

In his last interview he stated he wanted to stay with the club for a long time.
Our strengths this past 3 years have been built upon a platform of high intensity pressing, a settled squad, an extremely hard working group of fit and motivated players.
The results achieved have been remarkable and if lockdown had not happened we could have been competing in Europe.
We've all seen how this can unravel when key players are injured/suspended.
I still believe we will finish top 10 or even higher if we strengthen.
Wilder has a lot yet to achieve and I feel that he wants to establish our great club as a force in the Premiership.
We must give him the respect and patience that he deserves.

He's frustrated but I very much doubt he wants us to spend money we haven't got.

Seems like we're quite willing to match what he spent on McBurnie with the rumours floating about, which is a lot for us.

We're missing season ticket money, POTG money, catering money, program money, ad money, and a bit out of the TV budget, and we've had to do some stuff with our money, paid 1/5th of what we owe massive Blade McCabe, bought about £3m of youth talent, and we're building a new building at Shirecliffe, so we're being a little cautious with what we have left. But he knows that, and wouldn't want it any other way because he's all about leaving us in a better state than when he arrived, doesn't mean he can't be pissed off though.

Excellent post. The chairman has invested around 100 million pounds so far, small change for some clubs but not ours. The state of the economy and football in the here and now should mean we think very carefully before throwing money at it. We've had some poor luck so far with injuries and decisions but I'm confident Wilder will turn it around. As far as I can see the prince has been transparent about his finances and Wilder will surely have been made aware of this.

He said on camera he wants to be here for a long time the other day. I think unless the board change their attitude towards him and sack him he will be here longer than Warnock/Bassett was.

I think he's a stereotypical Sheffielder

Appreciates graft, hard work, honesty, commitment and a workman that'll do it cheaper than everybody else

The question is, would you jump ship? He's a blade through and through.
Does anyone really think that people would wreck the rest of their career by staying at a business for the fact that they love it? There’s several better options out there in the PL for CW. He may love United but he’s in the game for the long haul and loyalty isn’t a currency nor measure of success. Cash and medals are unfortunately, and only at the highest level that person can aspire to reach. Sorry, but a few more losses, paired with Man Citys slow capitulation and the choice of De Brunye over Norwood could be just be a little more tempting than love and a free pint in the Banner!

We’re rooted to the bottom, yet someone else is interested in him?
Why?

Not only are we not “rock bottom for a good while yet”, we aren’t even “rock bottom” now - less than two hours since you posted this drivel.

We getting de brunye for Norwood, can de brunye eat a greasy chip butty though, if not then it's a no for me...

It would appear also given his utterances that he takes note of social media including this message board. In my opinion that is ill advised and he shouldn't take much notice of what emotional and subjective fans think and feel. Too much negativity could also have an influence on his staying and going. Up to now he's had undying loyalty from fans

I’m genuinely interested to learn why posters ask unanswerable questions such as these - what good can possibly come of it?

See post 11, and if the club’s ambitions don’t match his, he’ll be giving it some serious thought.

Fuck him off and his favourite, Billy Sharp.
I mean, what have they ever done for us?

I think everyone on here will echo your thoughts. I believe Wilder is a genius & would like nothing more than to lead his beloved Blades for the next 10 years+. Establishing the club you love with the Country's elite & possibly the clubs first silverware for nearly a 100 yrs would probably the ultimate for Chris.
Unfortunately, we all know, the Board will never be as ambitious as the manager & they will eventually break him like they eventually do to all managers.
We all like to think managing or playing for the Blades would be enough for us. History & realism says different. A rare talented individual will stick with a club through thick & thin, a man like Dane Whitehouse.

All the other Blades have come + gone when richer pickings are offered elsewhere. People like Jimmy Hagan ( who the board wanted to sell to the Pigs ffs), Joe Shaw, Badger, Woody these are bygones.
Chris will give absolutely everything but in the end I fear the board will force him out before he becomes a regular Championship manager, once again selling all our young talent.

Hope not
