It does smack of yesteryear.

I think most of us realise that we don't have the funds to compete with most clubs at this level but considering where we were weak last season, I did think that would get suitably addressed within the confines of our budget.

Personally I think its unreasonable to expect us to be as stingy at the back this time so scoring more is key.

If we're relying on Sharp and McGoldrick to score with the same players behind them it's going to be a tough old season as much as I respect them both.

I know they are in talks with Sarr of Watford and Doku of anderlecht but they’re both wingers, doesn’t leave them a back up striker

If there's anything in this Brewster rumour just hope he didn't watch us last night otherwise it might be a big fuck off!
 
It's nothing to do with being stingy, it's just that good strikers command a massive premium. We had to strengthen in goal as we'd lost our main keeper from the last two seasons, and that cost a decent amount of wedge. It's not as simple as just saying 'we need a striker' - we do need a striker, that's obvious, but loads of other teams will also be fishing in the same pool. It's a seller's market and we're going to have to be quite canny and cute to get what we need. I trust the Prince, Bettis and Wilder to get who we need and not let anyone have our pants down in the interim just because Villa are prepared to spunk money away like there's no tomorrow.

I'm not so sure it is a myth. Our first 3 games always seem to be problematical. The highest points tally after 3 games under Wilder so far is 4pts. Usually well on course after 6 games.

The state of some people on here? Do we have a billionaire owner like Portugal wanderers? Did we spend nigh on £100m to get out of the championship? Do we have the spending power to go after the likes of Jimenez, Traore, Podence, Netto? Do people think CWAK prefer to buy championship/division 3 players over proven premier league players? Get a fu#king grip! If we get to Portugal wanderers level and lose a game we shouldn’t have, I’ll be the first on here causing havoc, until then, pErSpEcTiVe FFS.

Last season felt like a decent start to me, and 17/18 was excellent, despite the couple of losses. I suppose it's just a matter of opinion.

The positive for me is that we always turn it around. As you say though, getting something from the next two is important.

The only game i can see us winning is Fulham,no chance with the rest.
 

Very early days still. As our media says “forged in steel”, Last night we looked equivalent to a raw stamping in the rough shape of a blade. We need a bit of polishing and tempering to make us the hard side to beat we were last year. Hopefully Brewster can give us that cutting edge we were missing against Wolves. We’ve been here before and Wilder has sorted it out. Chin up👍

Too much pressure imo. With the age of some of the players (not qualifying for the 25) and Mousset's injury, we should be looking at bringing in Brewster and another playmaker/St. Not saying we go mad but there are players out there for free, cheap or loan that would add something.
 
I think we need Brewster and one other, someone like the lad from Bayern on loan?

Those two and Buendia for an investment of about £40m, would guarantee another season in the Premier League in my opinion and another £100m plus windfall.

We simply cannot afford to risk relegation for the sake of an investment less than the parachute payments we’d receive should the unthinkable happen.

There’s no way we’re spending 40 more million pounds, and finance doesn’t work like that. We’ll get another striker and that’s all we need to guarantee another season in the prem.

Yes, of course that is the case. It's not really anybody's fault, but I think we can all acknowledge that we're punching well above our weight even just existing at this level, relative to our disposable finances.

The difference between us and others is Chris Wilder. Give any of the bottom half managers our playing budget and I predict they'd (as a minimum) be in a relegation battle.
 
Could do with some good news early on this week seeing how negative everyone seems to be.
 
There’s 6 or 7 of us after a goal scorer and we’re bottom of the funds / wages list , Martin Tyler alluded to the same in Brighton’s game last night that they need one too , Lallana injury a blow ?... we’re in a league of 7/8 teams that we need to compete against and the fact that we will on the relatively sensible Structure we have is tantamount to how far we have come , and that we can attract the right type of player .....UTB

It's not so much owner wealth, it's about being sensible within the constraints of the current global situation.

We're already spending at an order of magnitude above what we did with the previous chairman, so accusations of parsimony fall well far of the mark. That said, the custodians of the club - from the owners to the management - owe it to SUFC to not spend beyond our means and get into trouble. We can't have everything all at once; we need playing staff, we need infrastructure (how many times do people bemoan our lack of scouting across the world), and we need development of the Academy to bring young talent through (and make us a more attractive proposition for talented youngsters with potential in the region). It's a balancing act, and one that I'm glad I don't have to manage.
