Wilder for England?

England fans calling for a change of manger now is the equivalent of United fans wanting Wilder sacked because we only drew with Preston last week.

Two low-key performances in what were basically pre-season friendlies. One win, one draw. No goals conceded.

Like him or not Southgate got us to a World Cup Semi Final and a Nations League Semi Final (tinpot but we still beat good teams to get there).

He deserves the chance to succeed or fail in the Euros next summer.

Any time we played a decent side in the World Cup we lost - Belgium twice and Croatia. Going into a match against Croatia, who at that stage had the best midfield pairing around (peak Modrić and Rakitić), with a midfield of Henderson, Lingard and Alli showed that not only is he tactically naive but you could argue Southgate is actually a bit stupid. No surprise that England's night peaked in the third minute then we spent the next 117 minutes chasing shadows.

Same with the Nations League. A decent victory at Spain which actually saw a relatively smart setup aiming to exploit them on the bench glossed over the issues which manifested themselves against the Netherlands in Portugal; namely that England don't have a clue when they're up against technically equal players who have a tactical plan.

Southgate needs to go - but who can replace him?

Problem is that Southgate will be able to dine out for a while on the fact that he's taken us further than anyone in the World Cup since 1990. I think the only way he'll go will be of his own accord or if we fail to qualify for a major tournament

In sports every now & then someone comes along and leads a very fortunate life, this has happened to Southgate I've not seen last 2 games as sick of the "glamour boys" being picked. People raved about him in WC when to be honest the route to semi final was so easy Halifax would have got there.

Belgium had our pants down twice and then in semi Croatia did for us, I just wish people would stop saying so and so are fantastic they bloody well are not. Years ago players played for England as they were the best in that position, now it's based on the team they play for. I was reading Hodgy's book and in 50's when the England team played rarely saw a player from so called "giants", there was like Burnley, United, Millwall IMS to name a few.

Is anybody actually bothered about the England national team anymore

its like sheff utd, as much as they wind me up, frustrate me & think why are we so crap. they are our country & i cant just give up on them

even though this is the nations league. & its funny as ever since the qatar got the world cup weve had all this talk "how we going to cope in the heat" "how is it going affect the season" "no christmas games that sucks" at this rate we dont have to worry about Qatar 2022, as if we dont improve we wont be there. because you actually have look like we can win a game to qualify

You can't class them as pre-season friendlies then later give a Nations League semi as an achievement.

I said it was a tinpot competition but we beat some good teams. Which we did and the games weren’t played pre-season.

Chris Wilder thrives on the day to day involvement with players, coaches and the club. He may one day leave us for one of the elite clubs (you know what I mean) but he’d be bored on the international scene.

To be honest, my thoughts and allegiances are with the Blades. I rarely give a thought to England, and the explanation for that is that they've under-performed, under-achieved, had less than adequate management, and players who are able to perform at a decent level for their club sides seemed like fish out of water on the international stage. Opposing players more often then not seemed better equipped, technically, and with what you might refer to as football intelligence, yet many of our players, for whatever reason, seem adrift of the consistency we should expect from any player selected to wear an England shirt. What I will add is that it's not a player's fault if they're selected when it's clear that they were barely good enough at club level.......so where does this leave the national set-up and the type of infrastructure planning that we seem bereft of?

It's been well documented that the German national set-up has adopted a root and branch approach to improving their national side. Apparently it took an enormous amount of patience to see the first buds of improvement, but gradually improvement began to be seen, and the general standard we've come to expect of their national side were as clear as day. Both their domestic side and their international side speak in harmony, they've manage to bang dissenting heads together and the result is a clear approach to wanting to achieve at international level.

Which you may think is some way from the question of who I support? I just happen to enjoy the daily, if not weekly, progress I've come to associate with United, at least since Wilder and Knill became our management team. What they've achieved for this club is little short of phenomenal, and the fact that on our return to the Prem last season showed just how good we'd become must underline that no matter how good players are, and that's not to discount the need for quality players, the drive from the highest office at this club is what continues to keep the players on their toes as they deliver the style of football we've now come to associate as our footballing 'culture'. I've supported the Blades since about '68/'69, and as with so many of us, the lows probably outweighed the highs, and I recall a time when gates were around the 13-14,000 level. Now of course we have approx. 30,000 at most home games, a fantastic achievement for a club that seemed, for so long, to have no ambition other than to survive.

We're a long, long way from being regarded as one of the country's top teams, but we've certainly given ourselves a 'presence', the look of a club on the 'up', and if that continues, then attracting better quality players will happen more regularly. The key to this is winning something, and in truth there's a limited number of competitions that carry real worth, but that's where we are and what we have to confront. Good, even great, players are the key to any of this, and it will take time to build considering the clubs we're in competition with. What I do know is this, we're where we deserve to be, it brings out the best in players, some who quite possibly never thought they'd play at this level, to rise above the standards they had become use to, and now they compete with world class players week in, week out. Don't know about you, but I still have to pinch myself to see the likes of Bash, Baldock, Egan, Fleck (don't forget, he was once destined for a career in the lower divisions of the professional game) and Sharp amongst others compete at such a good level.......it's fuckin' brilliant if truth be told, and all in four years!

Now, with all of that, and quite probably a few details I've forgotten to include, ask me why I'd give a toss about the national side? You don't build dreams and history unless you have the nuts and bolts of a club like United. You never will, period.

Wilder is clearly better than Southgate.

Southgate got Boro relegated with a big budget.

Wilder has won everywhere he has been and sometimes on a pittance.

Venables, Hoddleeven Taylor etc would have done just as well with the players Southgate has.

I genuinely just spent longer than I should trying to remember who the obscure Dutch manager Hoddleeven was 🤣

Wouldn't be surprised when Southgate goes the FA will have someone in mind and it won't be Chris Wilder.
They'll be looking to fast track Sol Campbell , he ticks all the right boxes.

Lest we forget Southgate was a wash up before he got the England job. He had his funky little waistcoat and got lucky in the last tournament but otherwise nothing has changed. England threw down the marker years ago when the stand out manager of his generation went for interview and got turned down. Ron Greenwood got the job instead

The world cup semi looks a hell of a lot better than it was. Who did we beat....Trinidad, Tunisia and Sweden. That's it! We lost as many fucking games as we won - unsurprisingly to any half decent team.

His style is defensive first, no matter who we're playing against. 2 Defensive midfielders against fucking Iceland (who just play with a back 10) is absolutely ridiculous.

To then change to a back three, having Dier on the Left side and Coady in the Middle, the trippier LWB (who was constantly facing his own goal) is hypocrisy considering he's apparently about round pegs in round holes.

The guy is a fraud, his club career consists of 1 achievement, relegation.

It’s OK saying in the World Cup we only beat the weaker teams, but former England managers with far better CVs didn’t manage to beat so called easy teams at tournaments (Euro 2016 - Russia, Slovakia and Iceland, World Cup 2010 - USA and Algeria!). Even if they are matches we should win, Eriksson, McClaren, Hodgson and Capello proved it’s still not easy!

As for the last two matches against Iceland and Denmark, I’m prepared to cut him a bit of slack as due to the pandemic players haven’t had a proper pre-season plus he was willing to experiment with the formation.

Dier playing left centre back, I can’t agree with but as for Trippier, that’s due to injuries. If he had Chilwell and Shaw available there is no way Trippier would’ve played on the left.

Am I 100% confident with Southgate in charge? Of course not, there are still question marks over his ability to win the Euros which is obviously the ultimate aim. But his record in the World Cup, Nations League and qualifying means he’s earned the right to take us to that tournament, so I think he deserved our backing until then.

I always thought Arsene Wenger could be a great fit for England manager.

Not English but knows the English leagues and game inside out. Well-respected within the game worldwide, experienced at working with elite players, good at developing youth, tactically astute and promotes a positive, attacking style of play.

It's hilarious when you think about it that Gareth Southgate is England manager and Chris Wilder is Sheffield United manager. The roles are the wrong way round when you look at tactical awareness, motivation and track record.

Lucky us, poor England
What an obnoxious thought. Get a grip Roy, G!re?h So(^%g*"e and Sheffield United in the same sentence. Sent shivers right down to the soles of mi feet, hade to sit down.

Think it was Panama not Trinidad (meaningless correction)

We also beat Columbia, on penalties no less! (Slightly more meaningful correction - granted didn’t beat them in normal time but a win is a win).

Anyway like many others I thought Southgate was a breath of fresh air at first, picked a young team, had a go, got quite far albeit not against the toughest teams. No complaints and had fun watching England at a World Cup for the first time in a long time.

But things seem to be drifting back to the old ways with “manager’s favourites” getting picked regardless of form and turgid performances.

The worst thing about that Colombia game is that he actually gets more praise than he deserves because we won on penalties. So he’s benefitted from failing to win a game we should have won in 90 minutes because England have historically been shit at penalties.

England are not a good team to watch, it’s actually a bit of a drag trying to spend 90 minutes watching it.

The pandemic hasn't just affected the UK.... You think the Icelandic and Danish players have had a proper pre-season? Not buying into that excuse at all.

You pick players to play the positions, if Chilwell and Shaw are unavailable, you pick Saka who has probably been the pick of the left backs anyway (I don't rate Chilwell as much as most). Even Maitland Niles who was in the side has played many a time at Left Back for Arsenal this season.

I agree that watching England often becomes more of a chore than entertainment - but for me the victory over Columbia was the best part of the World Cup for England. It was a textbook situation in which England always lose, Colombians were behaving appallingly and just shit-housing and cheating from the get go (do i remember deliberate kicking up of the grass before a penalty?) and we somehow, whether by luck or skill or whatever, prevailed.

A rare moment of vindication when watching the National side. I enjoyed it anyway...
