Ramsdale's had 3 seasons of professional football as a keeper. Finished bottom for Chesterfield in 17/18, finished 3rd from bottom with Wimbledon in 18/19 and 3rd from bottom with Bournemouth in 19/20.

Fair play to Bournemouth; they've had us twice on the same player. A double ended dildo of a deal. Bought from us low & sold to us high. From £1m to £18.5m in 3 seasons. 👍
So he's had plenty of shots at him. Plenty of experience. Sign him up.

Wimbledon did not finished third bottom. They finished fifth bottom, avoiding relegation after being 10 points adrift of safety in February. Their upturn coincided with Ramsdale signing on loan for them during the transfer window. He ended up winning their young player of the year award.

Personally I’m not sure this Ramsdale transfer is going to happen , yes we’ve agreed a fee with Bournemouth but it’s not done yet I think we’ll say to Manchester United if you don’t agree to let us having Dean Henderson at ~60 % wage contribution for next season we will buy Ramsdale . Henderson wants to play he will demand a transfer , which will bring Tottenham and a Chelsea into the frame , Manchester definitely don’t want to sell to either of them to clubs, so in my opinion this is a negotiating tactic and back up

Apologies for my factual mistake. Your correction has radically altered by viewpoint of him.

The 2018/19 winner of the Natalie Callow Memorial Trophy for Young Player of the Year (sponsored by Womble Underground Press)? Gerrrim’ signed.

We need to start getting real when it comes to fees paid and that we will have to continue to pay if we want to survive and thrive in the Premier League.

Bournemouth havent ‘had our pants down’ by charging 18.5mil for Ramsdale. He’s 22, with a season of PL experience and a POTY trophy to his name. He is a maturing investment not just a player who we are going to bring in for a year or 2. Another season of PL experience and he’s worth £30mil. An extremely impressive season and England call up? Probably £50mil.

This is the latest in a long line of ‘arrrr much’ Yorkshire war cries from our fans since promotion. Lys Mousset was the first, followed by Oli McBurnie, and even some said the same for Sander Berge. We really need to get real and fast.

We could go abroad and try and pick a player up for a snip of the price, yes. But for every Calgar Soyuncu and Ruben Neves you’ve got an Adrien Silva and a Sebastian Haller. Just because they’ve done well in a foreign league does not mean they’ll do well here.

Personally I won’t lie, I wanted Cakir. But at £22mil he loses the ‘better value for money’ selling point. It comes down to who has the better experience, and not many come from the Turkish league directly to the Prem and do brilliantly because the standard is of the Championship at best.

Ramsdale is a safe pair of hands, a number 1 for potentially 10 years, and has a very realistic chance of rivalling Henderson for the England number 1 shirt by the end of the season. He’s going to be behind a much much better defence then he was at Bournemouth, and dare I say it if Henderson was there instead of at the Lane this season he would’ve had the exact same problems.

Get behind him and support him. And start getting real when it comes to fees in this division.

ARRRR FUCKIN MUCH?!?!

To play devil's advocate...

You could also argue that it's a lot of money to pay for a keeper who only has a year's experience, in a poor side, was relegated and looks far from the finished article.

You could also argue that whoever replaces Henderson has big shoes to fill. As we enter our second season and hope to consolidate and push on, many might want someone more proven. Yes, Henderson wasn't proven, but he's the best of his generation, so it's less of gamble. My feeling is that the keeper has to be solid and dependable, as we look to build. We haven't really got the time and space to nurture a youngster, who may or may not come good.

Then you factor into the equation that we reportedly have very little to spend, none of us know how much, but for a club with a smaller budget as ours, £18.5m feels a lot for someone so unproven. If it doesn't work out, we have a big problem and a presumably sizeable chunk of the budget gone. Especially when you factor in that we need a CB, RWB, RCM, striker or two and are looking at a LWB.

Not a fan?

I think the point that Kanye makes is that whilst, yes, it's partly circumstances (you can only do what you can, with the squad you're on loan to), it's a very different trajectory to someone like Henderson who has stepped up a division each season, proven themselves at that level and been successful/comfortable at that level.

I have to agree with Chabuddy G as a fanbase we need to get real and stop this small time thinking it is a good deal for Ramsdale. He is young and his value is only going to increase, I get some fans saying he is expensive because we let him go for £1m but the only person to blame for that is penny pinching McCabe who never ever sold a United player at the going rate. At the time anyone offered £1m for one of our players and they were gone. If the tight cunt had actually invested in players who were already at the club we wouldn't now be in the position of needing a goalkeeper or a striker for that matter, every good player who came through the academy was sold off for a fraction of what their potential was worth.
For the first time in years this club is acting in a professional manner and buying players in their early twenties who whether they work out for us or not will increase in value. Better this than constantly buying players who are at the later stages of their careers and looking for a last pay day at a big club do you want to go back to buying the likes of Dean Hammond and Martin Woolford every summer and getting zero on the pitch and zero return when they leave?

Is it? Jordan Pickford cost £30mil and the lad makes a mistake every week.

Ramsdale is 22. With a lot of first team experience at all levels, and a couple of player of the year trophies to boot which is no mean feat for a keeper.

Henderson wasn’t and isn’t the finished article and if you put him in Bournemouth’s side he would’ve been just as exposed as Ramsdale and would’ve conceded just as many goals. Put Ramsdale behind our defence and I’m sure it’s a very different story.

How is he unproven as well? He’s just won POTY after a season in the Premier League.

We have no idea what our budget is, so I wish people would stop bringing that up.
We needed a keeper for the season, and why not just make an investment now that can set us up for 10 years?

It makes perfect sense.

With a quality defence and improved midfield and attack is it that important how good the keeper is as long as he is competent ?
Ramsdale seems to tick most boxes and any keeper will make mistakes as some on here will happily point out

Stop confusing us and our mind-sets with FACTS

Think some fans outlook re: transfer fees is symptomatic of supporting in the McCabe’s era and his corner shop approach of knowing the value of everything and not having the ambition to speculate at any point (Robson disaster aside).

Im delighted we’re investing in young, quality English players and taking all the necessary steps to set us up for a long time in this division. This means paying some hefty fees out- some of which have that element of speculation tied to them. Get used to it whilever we have people with the ambition of Wilder/The Prince I guess 😉

Is the £18.5 million without the sell on deducted?

If you think about it. Best player in a Premier League team at the age of 22. Goalkeepers peak at 30. He's a local lad who knows the club and didn't want to leave us in the first place.

We could pay the money for Hendo but we'd be in exactly the same position next season without someone like Ramsdale available. This way, if all goes well. We'll be sorted for a keeper for 5 years plus.
Robbie, the reports on bbc and sky indicate that the £18.5m fee takes account of our 15% sell on clause. Maths has never been a particular strong point, but I guess this would put the headline fee at nearer £22m.

On the face of it, this seems quite full given him limited experience but on the other hand he is young, English, has plenty of potential to improve and has just had a decent season at Bournemouth. Having just sold Ake for £41m I’m guessing they were holding firm on their valuation.

Personally, I would have liked to get Hendo back for another season, but what do I know. Sounds like his wages and loan fee were getting uncomfortably high. I think anyone other than Deano will be a stet backwards in quality. However, I trust CWAK and Darren Ward, who obviously have a lot of confidence Ramsdale is the right man for the job.

If its being reported as 18.5 then that's including sell on and brooks cash
Otherwise they would report it as 22 m as that would be the real fee

He hasn't played that many games (but he's only just 22) but he has played almost half of his 81 games in one full Premier League season. The fact he started and stayed as the Bournemouth number 1 given their porous form, says a lot. He's probably half to one season behind Hendo in terms of development and likely to just improve is handled properly.

Had my say on this in the rumour mill thread but let’s be honest, it’s going to be closer to £10M initially than £18M and to support that view, all the noise and figures are coming out of Bournemouth and not our local press. So unless our negotiating position has been to go in for £12M and then pretty much doubled it as soon as it’s knocked back, I’m of the mind that Bournemouth are either including all adds on and the sell on, or plainly inflating the fee to ensure they get the best price for their other players who are looking to go.
If the add on fee is on top of the reported £18.5 it would be a club record fee as Berges deal was always, “in the region of” so can’t have actually been £23M, yet that’s also not been mentioned.
That still makes him cheaper than Pickford who was in a very similar position. Highly rated English keeper who plays for the U21s and shone in their first full Premier League season despite them behind behind a relegated defence.
Most importantly of all we’re out from the influence of Man Utd who were only too happy to let this ride on so we were pressured into accepting stupid sums just so they had everything on their terms. Glad to be standing on our own two feet and pushing back against their attitude and behaviour.

Their fans idolise him

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter what I think, K. I have an opinion; it's neither informed nor carries any weight.

CWAK obviously rate him highly and see both current ability & future improvement and value for money at the reputed £18.5m transfer fee. And that's the only thing that matters.

Personally, I don't think that he's done enough last season to justify the fee. He's played less than 40 top level games, and got POTY at a relegated club. I've seen him have decent games & i've seen him have shockers. £12m would be more my idea of value, especially post Covid and for a relegated side. Perhaps some of our views are coloured by him being an ex-blade.

For £18.5m, I'd have preferred us to have paid £100k a week for Hendo on loan. Another loan would be a very good fit for all three parties. Another good season in the PL for us & him, and more money in the coffers would give us more power in the transfer market this time next year. The £5m loan cost is only the difference between 3 placings in the final league table.

It would've also left us £13.5m to put with what we get for CR, to spend on something sparkling up top. :)

Can't say I'd argue with much of that. I'm hesitant to say whether we're getting a good deal or not, only time will tell.

On one hand, we're getting someone extremely young (younger than Henderson for those unaware) with plenty of potential. He's very popular with the fans, seems to get plenty of plaudits and won the POTY - all of which point to the fact he's a capable player.

On the other hand we're paying a lot of money (which will be a good chunk of the budget) for someone who will almost certainly be a downgrade to Dean Henderson, based on most of the popular metrics used to compare keepers.

I think we make good decisions generally when it comes to recruitment, and I'm fairly confident that the other two big investments in Berge and McBurnie will prove to be money well spent. I hope this will be the same, even if I'm not entirely convinced just yet.

£18.5 million presumably less what we get back in sell-out (which given he was cheap I'd guess was 20-25%)? That's like £12/3 million for a goalkeeper who at 22 was considered to be one of the best players this season in a premier league team which got relegated.

A goalkeeper who will hopefully be with us for 5 years plus.

His stats don't look great but he's had zero defence (defence or midfield) in front of him. It's not like he has been facing the same kid of shots as other keepers.

He's more solid than spectacular. But I'd rather have an Alan Kelly Mr reliable type in goal
Nope, isn't £18m meant to be the actual figure?

It would have been over £20m had we not had the sell on clause.

This is an extract from the bbc article

“The sale price takes into account a 15% sell-on fee owed by Bournemouth to the Blades for his £1m move to Dorset in January 2017“

Understandably there is a lot of talk about Ramsdale and if he’s good enough. My only concern is if this puts pressure on us in other deals, to pay a higher price for outfield players?
It will also add fuel to the unbelievable wage structure that we survive on currently. (If we can afford big fees for players, why aren’t we competitive on salaries?)

I suspect we will have to leave all this to Wilder, Bettis and the Prince, because it’s quite clear that we, as supporters, don’t know the half of it. Let the clever blokes who got us here deal with recruitment and costs. It’s obvious that so far, they are pretty good at it. 🤷‍♂️

Shield is saying that 18.5 mill was the full price. He then states the the sell on clause, and some of the Brooks sale cash still owed, will reduce that fee further. Why would Bournemouth , "reluctantly", sell, if that's correct, after all , 41mill from Man City surely means they are not under pressure to sell???? Once Wilder made the offer, did Ramsdale threaten to put in a transfer request???? Seems very strange to me!!!!

Some threads just scream club culture and this is one that just highlights the cavernous difference between this side and the other one

Lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth about how much has been spent on a goalkeeper - then 23 year old Pickford cost Everton £25m three years ago after 30 appearances for the disastrous Sunderland - whereas we all know that in a parallel universe where Wednesday had been in the PL, this thread would have either being rejoicing in the total spent or complaining they should have bought a more expensive keeper.

I'm happier with our caution and humility

For me he has two big advantage already over Henderson., he wants to play for US and he will be OURS.
If we' sign him it will be a gamble but it's a gamble who ever we sign, even Hendo.....

Just to put some sand in the vaseline. Jack Butland, 27, full england capped, 5 seasons in the PL and 5 in the championship. Currently being offered around clubs at between £8m to £10m.
