Gone Elsewhere Matty Cash

A little snippet I was told last week;

Baldock (or his agent) pestered for a new contract. CW went in to bat for him and got him the offer. Baldock (or his agent) has since delayed signing as he wants to see if any other offers come in (there is interest, unsurprisingly). Been dragging on for weeks. Understandably, Wilder is pissed off.

If the above IS accurate, then either A) We’re using this Cash link to boot Baldock (or his agent) up the arse and get him to sign. Or B) we’re cashing in on Baldock (no pun intended) and genuinely are in for Cash as a direct replacement, which would explain why we are willing to part with £10m + on a RWB as we’ll directly use the Baldock money.

I’ve absolutely no way to substantiate whether its true or not; source came from a bloke a mate spoke to 🤷‍♂️ so didnt even bother to put anything on here. But since this Cash rumour has come up, it appears to fit in with the story alongside Wilders comments the other week about players coming to him for new contracts and not signing when offered.

What another new contract, further to the one he signed in August last year which takes him through to 2022??? Not sure that sounds right to me

First West Ham are after Eze, now it's Matty Cash. It's like their head of recruitment has realised after the Bowen signing that maybe the Championship isn't such a bad place to recruit players from. But in all seriousness, the West Ham stadium is awful, its owners are a joke, in general it's a dump of a club in a meh part of London but yeah sure head there BeCaUsE iTs In LoNdOn.

Best wishes,

A Londoner

East London's quite cool. It's not like he has to live in Stratford to play for West Ham.
In fairness, if I was a footballer & had the choice of living in London, or up north it'd be a no brainer.

Cash would give us a nice option between a natural attacking wing back, and a more naturally defensive wing back.

I think it's fair to say that George is improving his all round game month by month, mind you. He's improving his crossing a lot. Hitting the target with shots arguably his biggest area to improve (though a lovely goal v Norwich!).

I'm sure the £80k/week they're paying Bowen is morn than making up for the hardship. Going on your username I assume you're already aware, but there are some lovely places to live within 30 mins drive (which isn't far in that area!).

A journo is claiming Cash would prefer a London move with West Ham being interested since Jan, but they would need to bid at least 15M. We are currently leading the chase. Southampton are also preparing reportedly preparing a bid worth 12M.

It's looking like a couple of clubs might eventually meet the valuation and it will be up to Cash to decide his destination.

Just sounds like journo drivel to me. All his friends and family are up here.

I mean Wilder himself has basically signed a new deal every year despite it being nowhere near expiry. Baldock’s agent may, quite justifiably, feel the terms agreed last year need updating based on his season.

Possibly so, although I would expect given GB signed his last contract in Aug 19 when he was already (or soon to be) a Prem player and that it would include the uplift as a result on non-relegation that most/all others are benefiting from, that his agent would have negotiated terms that wouldn't become outdated already.

We have one right back at the club assuming K Freeman is gone now. To have two "first choice" players in every position is the depth we need eventually
So much this. Post-lockdown, it was really obvious that our defensive depth was lacking. If nothing else, another player capable of playing RWB to the required standard gives us cover for injury/suspension/loss of form, at best competition drives better performance from one or both.

Possibly. I’m just offering a reason why that rumour might be true – I’ve no knowledge on whether it is true.

I shrugged it off myself at first. Only since these Cash links have come up that I started thinking it might have some substance.

I guess you look at it from Baldock (and his agents) POV- last summer he was unproven at PL level. This summer, he’s not only proven, but done very well in a top 10 placed side with suitors elsewhere. Wouldn't be unlike an agent to try it on. Also wouldn't be beyond Wilder to agree to a raise if he believes a player deserves rewarding.

It could well be bollocks- but these strong links with Cash and the prospect of paying out a hefty fee for him do fit with a Baldock exit.

EDIT: FWIW I hope it is wrong- I want Baldock AND Cash.

When Pochettino played with wing backs he often rotated them having Walker and Trippier RWB and Davies and Rose on the left, though they had Euro games to play.

There are a lot of assumptions on this thread that Cash is simply being signed as a backup/competition for Baldock. Apart from it doing the lad a bit of a disservice you’re also ignoring that he can play in two or three different roles.

Managers (including Wilder) do alter the shape and setup of the team between and during games. There is no reason why in some games they both couldn’t play. The way we work with our overloads and link up between the wing backs, centre backs and midfield players there’s every reason to think they may often play together.

Even if he was just a signing for depth, I’m afraid £10+m per player is what that will cost you to improve.

Haha, I'm an Eastender (at present) so took instant offence. You're right though, Stratford & the surrounds are garbage.

Haha, fair enough. To be honest, my hatred for West Ham was completely colouring my judgement (you were right on that too Mouth of the South). Actually, there are some great bars and breweries walking distance from the stadium (Crate Brewery and the other places down the canal) which makes it a decent place to visit for a match day. But the ground itself is shite, I will stand by that (and the scummy club stuff).

We desperately need more depth in certain areas, and all our first team players should be getting pushed by someone waiting in the wings.
If we're seriously looking at a RCM, which it appears we are, then that's likely to mean Berge and Norwood are competing for the deeper role.
If those two are lining up against each other for that role, I don't think George can get too upset if he finds himself under the same pressure for RWB.
He's in pole position as he's got the shirt, and I'm sure he will know what he has to do in order to keep it. If he starts to slip, then we've a ready replacement.
This is what we want to aim for all over the pitch. The trick is to have players who accept the competition and continue to work hard rather than feel sorry for themselves, when they're on the bench.

The biggest difference between the average and good teams in this league is squad depth not starting 11 quality. This is immeasurably more important with the 5 covid-19 subs going forward. We need 2 players in every position that can genuinely push each other. Yes 10-15 million will be a large portion of our budget but our defence is the most part of our game and we won't get better for the money.

I must be in a minority here because I think the wing backs need upgrading
They are key positions for us creatively and I don't think.baldock has been good enough ,enda either
Yeah they've worked Hard but I'm so sick of seeing our play grind to a halt when it gets down the edge of the opposition box
Course conversely we might bring in more talented and creative players who can't match the work rate of our current players
Tricky one but for me this signing would improve us

I love our wing backs, though I agree that they could be better in the final third.

It made me cringe though when a couple of posters were claiming they were a better pair than Robertson and Alexander-Arnold. I know people go on about United fans having an innate inferiority complex, but surely there's a balance to be struck between that and bladey-blade lunacy.

Absolute lunacy agreed.
If either of those two were our wing backs, I dare say McBurnie would have scored more than 6 this season!

George and Enda work very, very hard but are not and never will be Premiership quality, (that said, Matty Cash may never be Premiership quality either). They are typical CW signings who have been outstanding for us and work well in our system but at times their technical ability has been seriously lacking, although on others they have been outstanding, (George's goal at Norwich and Enda's v Brighton spring to mind).

Cash fits the CW bill, he has a very good engine and will work very hard. Would he be an upgrade on George? possibly but he is 100% an upgrade on the departing K Freeman. A cynic could say that George played every minute of our campaign last year simply because he had no competition for the shirt, mind you, that could be said for most of the squad!

We desperately need quality strength in depth and competition for shirts. Cash would bring that IMO.

George is one of the best RWB in the Prem and the second best defensively. The interest in Cash is because he can play down the whole of the right side. His best attribute is running and dribbling in transition. I hope we can get him.
