It's not impossible to live normally without a cure. New Zealand have been doing it for weeks. October is quite a way away. If we get our numbers down to new Zealand levels by then then I can see it happening. Today's announcement however seems a bit murky to me. No word on numbers allowed in and a return to normal life 'by Christmas' so reading between the lines full capacity closer to that if everything goes well.
I agree.
There will never be a cure for the coronavirus infection, because
there is no cure for any infection caused by a virus. None. Whether that's hepatitis, influenza, herpes, HIV, shingles, or the common cold. You cannot "cure" a viral infection. A vaccine isn't a "cure". All you can do is reduce the symptoms and slow down the spread of such diseases. There are "treatments" but none of these are "cures". I think it's about time that message was conveyed a bit more clearly to the general public - along with all the other garbled messages perhaps?
The last "coronavirus" known as SARS - struck originally in 2003. That was supposed to be the next big global killer. Nearly 17 years later we still do not have a vaccine for it. It is still under development. Fortunately that particular coronavirus seems to have disappeared off the map. If we do have a vaccine for COVID-19 this year that will be a minor miracle, but it will take at least another 12 months, or more, before we've vaccinated enough of the population for it to offer protection to the majority of us. And that's assuming that it works and is safe and that people do build up antibodies to COVID-19 and that those antibodies remain in our system to protect us in case we become exposed to it. The concerning thing from what we know so far about COVID-19 is it seems like few people actually produce antibodies to it and even in those that do the antibodies don't hang around for very long. If this is the case, then the vaccine is going to be of limited benefit.
Too early to say yet, but it's really important people stop thinking that the vaccine is going to be a "cure". No vaccine is.
So, given that, here's a question for everybody...
How are you planning to spend the rest of your life?
Locked away indoors, not socialising with people or going to work, for fear of catching something that will cause a serious health problem in less than 1% of the population?
I'm really concerned about the social and economic impact of this coronavirus. We've created a nation now of folks who are scared, folks who are ignorant of the facts, folks who are going to lose their livelihoods, folks who are going to die unnecessarily of other diseases that could have been treated, but aren't, because of the focus on this particular virus.
It's a long way back from here and I do think it's about time we got some honest and factual information out there to people and started letting them take responsibility again for their own lives.
