Or however you want to name it. That attacking midfielder. The ‘one in behind’. A ‘number 10’.

The formation that got us 2 promotions in 3 years.
The formation that allowed us to dominate games.
The formation that, despite any arguments to the contrary that it would make us more open defensively, saw us lose 3-0 only once in the Championship in over 100 games.
The formation that might actually see us create more than 1 chance every 3 games for the front 2.
The formation that might see Luke Freeman actually have a run of games and make a real impact.

Time to bring it back? I think so. We’ve got nothing to lose.

No harm in going back to that formation for the rest of the season.

I couldn’t agree more. The flat 3 is horrible to watch, nerfs our attacking threat and, turns out has very little to do with our defensive record as we’re shipping goals without first team defenders.

Would it change our fortunes? Maybe, maybe not.
Would it hurt us to know? Unless we lose 4-0 every game and don’t create a single chance certainly Not

I’d rather start Freeman on his own than the midfield 3 that have started the last 3 if they’re gonna play like that 😂

Joking aside, I agree.

Not so sure about all this talk of changing the formation completely. We’re obviously lacking in keeping the ball in the final third, whether we’re on the back foot or whether teams are sitting in against us, we don’t look dangerous in the slightest.

I love Wilder but he definitely plays favourites. Freeman gets barely enough time to lace his boots in terms of game time. It was a bit of a joke Norwood started the Man Utd game given how bad his form is.

Not changing - reverting to a formation that dominated most teams we played over the last 3 seasons. The overlapping CBs is novel and got the attention but the No 10 role really made us tick. We just don’t attack centrally without it.

The flat 3 midfield doesn't work when all 3 are playing so deep and we have no outlet.

There has been people that have suggested changing to 4 at the back on here in the last week or so though. There’s just not enough time in between games to do anything radical.

The no 10 has to make a return.

All we do at best at the moment is perhaps work the odd position to put a cross in that is easily defended. Almost all the goals we score are from fast, passing movements, looking up, going forward, not hoofing it, not passing side to side to win a corner if we're lucky.

The last three games have been dreadful and a far cry from what we've been used to seeing. They look unfit, uninterested and most worryingly lack any sort of confidence.

The number of times one of the 3 received the ball and had no forward options was a joke. It meant we couldn’t get out, and would either go backwards, be pushed wide or risk a ball into our heavily marked forwards. We have no one, inbetween the lines. Dids can do it but then McBurnie is even more isolated!

The flat 3 has obviously worked very well this season, and nobody was suggesting we change it a week ago. Let's not forget, Wilder went with the flat 3 in big away games last season too (against Leeds, for example).

But, now that Europe is probably gone, I see no harm in trying the number 10 (especially against 'weaker' sides) between now and the end of the season.

The flat 3 is always in front of the opposition, meaning they can apply pressure without having to worry who’s behind them. Man Utd just squeezed us into unforced error after unforced error.

I’ve hated it since day dot and I maintain that our defensive record is in spite of its adoption not because of it. My evidence to this fact comes from our incredible defensive record in both our League 1 title and promotion seasons. It takes away far more from our game than it provides in my view

Can I be that one nob head to raise my hand and say ive been suggesting for us to change from the flat 3 to the number 10 since the start of the season. :p 😂

I've always felt we should've given it a go when against the weaker teams, but you can't argue with the results. It's definitely time to go back to it now we've nothing to lose.

Agree, would like to see us play a 10 (whether that’s starting or at least if the flat 3 isn’t working in the middle of the game), the last 3 games were crying out for Freeman to come on and give us some kind of outlet, don’t like the idea of defending deep with a flat back 5 and trying to hoof it into channels for Mousset or Zivkovic to run into. Even in league 1 when we struggled to score/create we used to take Bash off/moved into midfield and bring another striker on and play 4 at the back. Not a criticism either, we’ve been unbelievable this season.

Perfectly summed up. 👍

Can we try it at the start of next season instead? I've got a message from my pig brother-in-law saying we'd get thrashed every week that I wanted to ram down his throat at the end of the season so I don't want us to get thrashed every week now ;)

It starts over next season so we can try it then for me.

Not the time to change what we have not practiced; and cannot.

The season has been superb, but there’s no evidence that we would have been any less solid with the No 10. We are, however far far less potent.
There is also no evidence we are far less potent due to the formation. Our lesser potency could be entirely due to the jump in quality from Championship to Prem.
