Not saying that there isn't anything in the kitty for next season but Wilder made it quite clear that Berge was signed with the money we were going to get for remaining in the Prem next season, didn't he? He said that that was the only way we could get him in before other bigger clubs started circling in the off-season.

Sure we'll sign players but I doubt that they'll be mega-money signings given the recent circustances regarding Covid losses and the owners having to buy the assets. This just seems to me like we are cutting our cloth accordingly.

We'll see.

Might have been in that Bettis and Wilder press conference following JTW and only thing I remember them specifying is that the Berge deal will have an effect on the summer business but didnt go much into much detail at all. Like you have mentioned Covid will most likely if not definitely effect this further.

Whenever Bettis speaks I never get the impression that we won't continue to move forward with solid investment in the team. Apart from the real big boys that will still pay stupid money I expect there will be some real bargains up for grabs in the window.

I'd suspect that fact we're offering the likes of Sharp, McG and Bash another couple of years would probably indicate that money will be tight. I'd expect most of the TV money next season to be swallowed up by the club with the transfer kitty being significantly less than this season.

That or we’re saving the money for a particular player/position.
We all know we need more flair in attack, perhaps they’ve looked at the budget and thought we’re better off spending another £20m on a single player, than 4 £5m players.

Why wouldn't you offer them contracts? Bash is one of the best defenders in the league going by stats, Sharp offers a few goals and is club captain and talisman, and McG is a classy linking striker with a couple of years in him yet.

Doesn't mean we're skint, just shows we know what we already have.

Can't see it. We need numbers as well as quality. Next season's squad

GK Verrips, Moore
DF Stevens, JOC, Bryan, Egan, Bash, Baldock, Robinson
MD Berge, Fleck, Norwood, Osborn, maybe Lunny
ST Sharp, McBurnie, Mousset, Didsy, Robinson

Even if you chucked in Smith and Norrington-Davis to the mix, we'd need 7/8 new players.

It makes perfect sense to have them all here next season, especially given the circumstances. It's the extra year that worries me a little. I mean, if you had money, you'd probably offer a year with the option if both parties agreed.

They probably wouldn't though, it's not in their interest at all, players like Bill and Bash might love the club but it'd be an amazing act of selflessness to take a one year deal for the sake of the club's finances.

We will have to score more goals next season as our defence has kept us in a challenging position.
Cant see our present attackers being able to improve on that to a significant level.
We will probably have to tinker with our methods some what to stay ahead of the pack also in need of more nous with somehow finding a forward to add to our strike force all in my opinion of course.
We may have to go abroad to find the striker we need as the price for young british strikers is prohibitive.
There will be bargains in the EFL as numerous clubs will be desperate for money hopefully we can pick out 2 or 3

I can't imagine another Premier League team would be interested in signing Billy, Didsy or Bash. I'm unsure whether a top-half Championship team would offer them 2 year contracts which come anywhere close to matching what they're likely on. At the start of the 21-22 season they'll be 35 1/2, 33 1/2 and 33. If we're still in the top flight then that's 3 of the 25 squad places taken up by 3 players who are likely to be no more than bit-players.

Bash is the fittest player in the club.
Billy is our most clinical finisher.
Didsy plays a technical game and has never relied on pace,

Baby?
Bathwater?

Just like the changing of the seasons the old “there’s no money in the kitty” chat that starts up before the start of every transfer window.

It’s a reassuring constant in these turbulent times.

Bearing in mind that this squad has gotten us to touching distance of Europe in our first season back, why wouldn’t you have faith in the team and reward them.

For me, this shows we are being financially prudent and not throwing money that we don’t actually have in a very uncertain climate.

Retsos and Zivkovic haven’t pulled up any daisies in the time they have been here and shouldn’t be signed permanently on over inflated fees to fill up the squad if they don’t get game time.

I would expect that Wilder will revert to UK/Irish players that have gone under the radar again for the next transfer window and then once things have stabilised and gate receipts are coming in again move for more expensive imports.

So we need 33 players?

I counted your list of players and added.

But even so, we need 28/29 players???

Specsavers are open! ;) although I have missed a Freeman.

we had like 35 player in March albeit some out on loan. We'd need more than 28 if we made it into Europe.

If we didn't play our first team in Europe there'd be no point. And there's no way we could afford to find 7 players good enough to contribute properly

We won't be playing the league cup if we qualify for Europe.

So we will be playing the same amount of matches if not less then we did in the championship. We'll be fine.

You are making an assumption that we won't get injuries or suspensions and our players will have no fitness issues.

No, I'm assuming we are financially unable to sign 7 or 8 players good enough to contribute to the first team. We might sign 7/8 players (I highly doubt it) but they won't all be good enough

I think we're going to need to bring in quite a few players for next season's squad.

A goalkeeper.
I'd be shocked if Man Utd allow Dean Henderson out to us again next season. The case for doing so makes less & less sense every week.

Strong cover for Baldock, Basham & Egan.
On the basis that K Freeman & Jagielka are unlikely to be offered extensions to their deals, cover is going to be needed for these 3 positions. Will probably need 2 signings.

Replacement for Lundstram.
Sander Berge is taking time & there's no guarantee he can perform that role down the right hand side. Wilder seems to be conceding that Lundstram is not going to sign a deal, so one would assume we'll look to re-coup some money for him this Summer.
If the budget is tight, I still wouldn't be against Besic coming in. He can cover Norwood also.

Cover for Fleck.
I can see Luke Freeman requesting a transfer this Summer. He can't be happy with how things have gone.

A striker.
We need someone with pace, power, the ability to lead the line & score goals. This will be the expensive one.
Our strikers, though all offering something, just don't look able to consistently deliver. We need someone to come in that can feed off scraps & make a nusicance.

We'll probably need to spend circa £50-60m. Hopefully we can recoup £15-20m from sales (Robinson, L Freeman)

I think we need two or three in midfield, especially is he doesn't fancy Osborn there. If Lunny goes, we only have Fleck, Berge, Norwood, Freeman

Am I the only one who thinks that JOC will be leaving in the summer and the decision CW is referring to regards Jack Robinson and he is ending these loans to save some money to replace JOC. JOC will want to be near London with his partner based in France. I think Wilder is referring to JOC when he discusses annoyance at new deals. I personally think Lunny will be staying with us as we offer him a platform he’d be unlikely to get at any other team.
But I’m wrong about so many things, but tbh I’d be more annoyed if JOC didn’t want a new deal than Lunny. I can’t but help Wilder is the same.

If no-one who's been in the 25 man squad leaves we still need 7/8 which is exactly why we are trying those players down.

we need the quality of those 7 or 8 to.bw higher than the championship players they are replacing
