It's Breathtaking, It's Sensational, It's Steve Kabba

I maintain that Kabbas goal is just as good, if not better, then the Euro 96 Gazza vs. Scotland goal.

Colin Hendry fully commited and landed flat on his arse, Walker stayed on his feet which made the volley much trickier.

Think Beans and Roygbiv mention this in the triple assault podcast - how good kabba is gets a bit overlooked, or at least 2 of his big moments seem to.

This goal was fantastic and his contribution in the win v pigs gets a bit forgotten about thanks to Browns volley.

It has been a long time since I saw the goal and I must admit it is top draw.

Kabba was one of our best players under Warnock, a shame the injury ruined him.

That side was better than the one that Warnock got promoted a few years later

Perhaps in midfield and in part up front, but particularly that night I wouldn’t have said the defence was, and would argue that the best lineup was definitely better that season.

Comparing what I’d put as the best lineups:

Kenny 03 vs Kenny 06 – the more experienced Kenny wins that battle

Jags 03 vs Bromby 06 – Jags much better

Harley/Quinn/Kozluk 03 vs Unsworth 06 – Unsworth considerably better than the lot

Murphy & Page 03 vs Morgs & Short 06 – much as I really liked Murphy & Page, Morgs & Short were the better and more reliable pairing

Tonge 03 vs Armstrong 06 – clearly Tonge

Brown & Macca 03 vs Jags & Tonge 06 – definitely Brown & Macca

Ndlovu 03 vs Ifill 06 – I can already sense the rage some will have at this answer, but sorry everyone it’s Ifill, who was definitely much better that season than he gets credit for and was a key part of the promotion.

Kabba & Windass 03 vs Webber & HMS Shipperley 06 – just when you’d all calmed down over #NuddyIfillGate, I’m going to double the rage and say I’m afraid it’s the excellent latter partnership(perley). Kabba & Windass had a good spell initially, but players effects on the team should be judged on their overall contribution not just on their spells of good form. Webber the better goal return, HMS the better partner (and much better goal return)

Was 03 a better team to watch and generally more exciting than 06? Absolutely. Was it the better team based on the players involved? The midfield was, but that’s about it.

Would have loved to have seen a defence of Murphy & Morgan.

Agree on Ifill. Loved Nuddy, one of the most outrageously skillful players we've ever had but Ifill was a solid 7-8/10 week in week out. To borrow an analogy, players like Nuddy win you cup ties, players like Ifill win you leagues. Shame he wasn't quite up to Premier standard but he was an outstanding 2nd tier player.

My mind is fried. I've got Jags & Morgan as the 1st choice CB pairing in 2005/06. Short played but I didn't have him as first choice ???

Here's my combined XI from '03 & '06 in the 4-4-2 that we played then and if they were to play in the current CWAK system...

4-4-2:
Kenny
Geary - Jagielka - Morgan - Unsworth
Ifill - Brown - McCall - Tonge
Kabba - Webber
3-5-2:

Kenny
Jagielka - Morgan - Bromby
Geary - McCall - Brown - Armstrong
Tonge
Kabba - Webber

I think Jags played most of it in CM. I remember him starting off there, whether he moved to the back further on I can’t quite remember.

I remember Tonge getting dropped for a bit halfway through the promotion season, who took his place?

I remember the first game with Kabba and Windass at Bradford when we put 5 past them and thinking this is just rudiculous. United don't sign exciting players with pace and skill like Kabba and intelligent like up players like Windass. Esoecially after his display for Grimsby I'd bever been so exciting about a signing.

However to get the best out of Kabba you needed to play him with Windass or with Chief as the game stretched.

Why Warnock went for starting Asaba ahead of Windass or Mark fucking Rankine ahead of McCall on the biggest game of the season is beyond me and still angers me to this day.

Colin eh!

I could definitely google this for myself but its more fun to ask. I guess the Forest 'keeper (who Kamara annoyingly refers to by his full name constantly) - he's now our goalkeeper coach yeah?

Peschy's was none too shabby either :)

Is he the best 'super sub' we ever had ? I'm struggling to think of one better .

How many of those players at their best for us would get in the current side? Jags, maybe Tonge, Morgan and Brown, but who would they replace? I loved Morgan, but I'd not swap him for Egan, for example. Sorry Morgs.

I always thought Webber and Kabba's pace would've helped see us survive in the Premier league.

Great memories of this game, despite not being there. Would have been 12 years old and watched it on Sky Sports. The shift in emotions through the game really stick with me when I think about it now, pretty sure I was frustrated/upset almost to the point of tears when we went 2-0 down and actually turned the TV off. Stormed up stairs telling myself I wouldn't watch the rest of it....lasted all of about 2 minutes and went back downstairs. Switch the TV on just in time to see Brown's deflected free-kick hit the back of the net and we all know how it went from there.

If current day 29 year old me was to witness the equivalent of that game now, I'd be drunk 5 days straight afterwards - incredible!

I was always a big fan of Steve Kabba, so much so that a good few years later I got drunk and Tweeted him to make sure he knew. He made my night, he replied 😂.

Jags played the majority of games in midfield if I remember rightly that season – I don’t think we even moved him back there when we had the shortage that required us to hand Collins his debut in the derby. Jags was mostly in midfield, with a mix of Geary/Kozluk/Bromby at RB, and Morgs/Short/Bromby the main CB options. I think Short & Morgan was the most paired pairing so to speak.

Geary, though great the following season, wasn’t used too much that season. For me, based on how the players did that season in the positions they played, which is why I didn’t include him vs Jagielka.

Saw Des Walker at the supermarket the following week he looked a bit down and had a huge load of shopping and was waiting for a taxi. I thought I'd do the right thing, 'you alright Des.'
'Yeah mate.'
'Can I give you a lift?'
'Thanks mate, that'd be sweet.'
'Which way you heading?'

Kabba was a great player until his injury, loved watching him play. The playoff final was typical Warnock fuck up. And im not A Warnock hater! Not playing Mc Call was a terrible decision on the day. Play your best team for fucks sake.
