Just reading this article about how Jack O’ Connell would make a good back up at Liverpool at ”close to £9m”

How come our players seem to be so undervalued in comparison to other Premier League players?

On Transfer Market.com they have John Fleck valued at £5.85m and Chris Basham at £2.16m. I know it’s not real but I’ve seen newspapers give similar valuations of John Fleck for instance.

If we wanted to get a replacement as good as Jack O’ Connell from another Premier League club you can be sure it would cost us a lot more than £9m.

A question, does this absurd valuation apply to players at all clubs? Clearly, JOC's apparently low valuation reveals how rubbish their info-gathering is. Even defenders in the Championship seem to have a value that exceeds JOC's.

It's also worth noting, Transfermarket.com appears to have changed it's name to sportin.com, yes, that's sportin without a g.

Bloody declining modern standards and I will certainly be despatching an epistle to the Telegraph forthwith.

Nothing like 'its' without an apostrophe or 'your' spelt 'yer' though......

Transfermarkt has, as I’ve mentioned over the years, been utter nonsense.

I think I was first alerted to the batshit valuations when it was brought up in the Adkins season when someone was talking about the values on it:

And not a particularly credible opinion either. Conor Sammon is our 4th most valuable player in the transfer market? Really? Nearly double the value of say Bradley Dack? Che Adams has the same market value as ageing failure and legendary penalty expert Andy Taylor? This has clearly been put together by someone with lots of time on their hands but bugger all knowledge of League 1.

You’d think as we’ve progressively gained more coverage that this sort of thing would have reduced. Evidently not.

Don't read too much into it. Adam Webster at Brighton is listed at £10.8m but was sold last summer for £20m.

Henderson and Retsos are valued at £13m & £7.2m. If they're available at that we would've bought them by now.

Enda Stevens £4.95m 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 . That might buy one of his pubes.

Dispatches is a British current affairs documentary programme on Channel 4, first broadcast on 30 October 1987.

Since then I have used the 'i' thinking I had been spelling it wrong for years

The House of Commons has 'Despatch Boxes' which I'd suggest carry a little more historical weight, than trend-chasing pinko-liberal Channel 4, pandering to Europhiles and its Metropolitan bourgeois elite .....*

* Continued in the speeches of Nicholar Farage (er.....possibly)

Think it's mainly to do with us being down in the basement divisions for so long when we get with the so called big boy's we're seen by the media and TV as a annoying itch what won't go away, so we have to carry on going forward to get rid of this tag sadly, so say something like a euro place or even a cup and you never know we might be accepted by these snobby bastards. But who cares we know we're a good side so that's all that matters.

JOC would be at least £40m if someone wanted to buy him.

He's English and has only just turned 26.

Luckily for us, the fact we play quite a unique system might put other clubs off trying to buy him.

Absolutely spot on.

Prices are all relative and get guided by comparisons to recent similar transfers.

For instance could anyone say truthfully that JOC is less than half the player Maguire is? Based on that he is straight away worth £40m.

Another example is how he compares to Lewis Dunk (favourably IMO). Brighton wanted £45m for him last summer. Adam Webster went for £20m having never played in The Prem.

JOC has proven he’s up there with the best with his performances this season. His price tag should reflect that.

And it will with the only people that matter, the club.

I would bet my house that if anyone enquires about O’Connell in the next 2 years the price would be not a penny under 40 million

Probably basing the figures on the cost of buying him out of his contract. These figures never match the value achieved if they were to be bought by another club, simply because unless the team agrees to sell they go nowhere while under a contract.

Fact is, Maguire wasn’t worth that fee, just they Man U were desperate so had to pay silly money.
I can bet you a pound to a penny that if Liverpool wanted JOC, they would be in a strong position.
1. Current euro champs and Prem league champs in waiting...therefore NOT desperate.
2. JOC is a liverpool lad and would probably walk over hot coals to play for them...similar to Billy for us.
so if it ever became a possibility he and his agent would be applying crazy pressure to get it done, and who would blame the lad.

Realistically, United would probably end up selling for £15m....madness because to US he’s priceless and probably irreplaceable, at any cost.

Transfer fees, like most things in football are about opinions.

£5m is probably about right for Stevens, he is almost 30 after all. He’s worth more to us than £5m, but it doesn’t mean anyone would pay much more than that if he was available for transfer.

Transfermarkt is great for checking a players seasonal stats even if the market value they place is a bit dubious, and previous seasons stats are kept on there too, even a breakdown of games in whatever position he's played in..this is handy especially if you do any football manager related type game and doing a quick scout, theyre also one of the best sites for database updates on young players coming through across the world.

i find it astonishing people dont just use common sense, so VVD was £75m from soton in 2016, granted JOC is not THAT hyped yet, but if we use that as a benchmark in terms of team stature (similar to soton relative at the time), age (26) at transfer, relative TM inflation since, and the player’s status at club (key player), potential (less than vvd but still very impressive), then being realistic I would value him towards £50m, he is also English which increases value and as pointed out Maguire, Dunk, were valued similarly and they were proven to cut it in the PL just as JOC is

I think part of the reason for the low valuations for many of our players is the lack of success in their careers outside of Wilder's management and outside our unique "System". Since Wilder took charge apart from Brooks who have we sold or let go that has either maintained their level of playing or bettered it? Now I'm not saying for one second that JOC, Egan etc couldn't play in a back four but it must be seen as a risk for clubs who have no intention to play the Sheffield United way. Our team is certainly greater than the sum of its parts without doubt. That is the only reason I give Southgate some leeway for not having capped O'Connell though the more I see of Mings the more I lose patience.

That said £9 million would be ridiculous for O'Connell though I imagine if £30 million plus was offered by Liverpool we may struggle to keep hold.

I would say a current realistic valuation would be around the £40-50m mark. You have to factor in how long he's got left on his contract so when it gets down to 12 months left and if the player is not likely to sign a new one, then the club may look at cashing in.
