The majority of Blades I've spoken to seem to want the season to be completed (me too) hopefully for us to be able to qualify for Europe the 'traditional' way, whether that be Europa League, or even better the Champion's League. Of course we have no idea how it would have/will pan out but, if the following were the only definite 2 choices, and you had to vote for one, which would you go for?

Choice A - Finish the season, with all the possibilities still open of a Champion's League place, a Europa League place, outside the European slots altogether.
Choice B - Finish the season now and take a guaranteed Europa league place based on points per game so far.

As an old traditionalist, I'd go for finishing the season, even if it means missing out on European football.
Things I've considered before making my choice.
Will we have a better chance of Champion's league football in our lifetime? Not sure.
Will we have a better chance of Europa League football in our lifetime? I think yes, under Wilder.
Would it feel the same 'qualifying' now, when we haven't really? Not for me. Even if it seems fair on points to date, no-one knows what might happen to affect the outcome. (Mind you, I'm the type that gets pissed off if someone accidentally flips a card face-up when they're dealing half way through a game!!)
If we finish the season and miss out, would I be philosophical about it and not bleat on about what could have been?! (I'd bleat)

Yep, I’d agree with option A. I’d like the chance to do it properly (either take the opportunity or screw it up!). Plus, if we stop now, I don’t think I’ve seen any formula that puts us in the Champions league. I would prefer it to be in our hands.

Sorry but for me. Scrap the whole 2019/20 season , start a fresh season in September and stuff all the complaints from teams that miss out , stuff all the agents and stuff all the lawyers, Sky and all the others that make money out of football. End it full stop, there’s been too many deaths and to big a break . If it starts up again behind closed doors do you let each team play like nothings happened and play full squads , example Tottenham, Man U , Newcastle all had big players out injured and now able and fit to play, not easy just to pick up a 9 game mini - season .
I know I will definitely be in the minority but for me just scrap it and hope for a fresh season to be up and running around September. Would you watch the first hour and 10 minutes of a film then watch the last 20 minutes 2 month later , probably but wouldn’t be much good.
Anyway for what it’s worth that’s my opinion and would be very disappointed to finish it with never knowing if we would’ve made the European tour we so badly want.

Points per game for games in hand puts us in Europe next season.

I smell bacon.
First.

Looking at it with my heart: let the season be played out it's football that's how it is, if we don't finish this season whose to say the next won't go the same way? One full season over 2 years or 2 part seasons?
Looking at it with my brain: gambling the Europa Cup a loss maker against further riches in the Champions League, bragging rights over those fools, always able to drop into the Europa league...
It's not really a question that needs answering.

There’s absolutely no logic to prioritise a season that hasn’t even started over a season that is almost finished.

Okay behind closed doors. Crowds aren't the bee-all-and-end-all (though they can sway a game or decision one way or the other). Doing it that way at least keeps the integrity of the season in tact, albeit heavily diluted.

To finish it as it is now would benefit us but I'd still feel we've 'not really qualified' to some degree.

As we have testing kits now, test the key workers first. That's the priority as we all know. Then why not test footballers and the managers? Get it done and get it sorted and get this particular issue done and move onto the next hurdle.

I don't understand the point of testing unless it's for:
People who once the test has been found negative are going to work with vulnerable people and in the meantime are kept away from possible infection.
People who need diagnosing as it is a threat to their health (which doesn't include ordinary fit people).
People who are going to be trialled with a vaccine.
None of these should apply to the football world and very few to the population in general.

Junior Sambia, a 23 yr old Montpellier midfielder is/has been in an assisted coma due to covid for a week. I’m sure both he and his loved ones will be pleased to know that the virus poses no threat to him.

Not enough detail about this to make an informed opinion. Sounds like (I'm no doctor but there aren't any doctors volunteering inside information on this case), he had a different illness before picking up Coronavirus. This was always likely to happen to somebody sooner or later and why ill people should stay in bed.

Ah, the “they’re old/ill/weak anyway, so fuck em” argument. The bottom line is that practically everyone who has died with or of the virus would have lived many days/months/years longer had they not caught it. So why risk spreading it for non-essential stuff, including sport?

There’s no point abandoning this season to start another, because we aren’t going to be anywhere near approaching normal life by the end of the year, let alone September.

Who has used that argument? (In this thread).

A.

We have a game in hand + Chelsea, Wolves and Spurs at home. Champions League football is in our own hands.

As if that has just been typed out - CL Football is in the Blades own hands ... I love CWAK !!

as i put on the ediversie thread. voiding the season is not an option

so it begins

Dutch top-flight club FC Utrecht are preparing for legal action to fight the Royal Netherlands Football Association's decision to cancel the remainder of the league season and allocate places in next season's European competitions based on the standings when play was halted
______________________________________

for anyone who on here thinks voiding the season or scrapping promotion or relegation is still a good idea. this is going to happen so many times over because (judging by Celtic in europa league, before the group stage began) this legal action is over a minimum of £3.7m so it a team is willing to fight over that think whats going to happen with 3 going down & 3 that should come up when that figure is £100+ m a season

I don't get the argument for voiding the 19/20 season. People keep talking about 'next season' which wouldn't really be next season, just this season restarted after we've already got 80% of the way through. The driving force behind this argument seems to be simply having football to watch August - May with sporting merit a side issue. There is no guarantee that a regular football season can start in August anyway.

I was thinking the other day a potential solution would be play a 'double season'. End this one now and play every team again next season home and away where we left off with 10 extra games and scrap the cups. Not sure what would happen with Europe though so probably wouldn't work.
