New pitch

I sat near pitch level on the Kop t'other day. I was amazed to see the slope down from South to North (Cherry Street to John Street) of the pitch. The first time I'd been that low at that end.

I knew it sloped but it was the first time I realised that the goal at the Bramall Lane end hasn't got a horizontal cross-bar. I don't think that goal is a rectangle;
IF, my eye-sight is true (I wear reading glasses and am 52) and IF the terraces of seats are level at that end (against which I was lining the goal up), then the crossbar, like the pitch - slopes. (I hope to be proved wrong btw)

That goal appears to be a parallelogram rather than a rectangle to this observer (I don't even know if that is within the rules??)

SO, if we are sowing a new pitch, might I suggest that the pitch is levelled so that it is dug lower against the South Stand please?

I have previously mentioned that the pitch is close to the water-table as it is BUT if Bramall Lane really is to host important internationals etc. in future I'd have thought rectangular goals are a pre-requisite.

That said;

I am informed it may have been Gangway D, Row K, seat 57 or 56? Just above the goal to the left hand side. On reflection, I think that its because there were NO supporters whatsoever in the bottom tier of the Bramall Lane stand that I was able to line up crossbar with the seats behind (or rather, couldn't make them line-up).
I would be very interested to see a photo Workington. I've not got the wherewithall to do it myself at the Port Vale match because my phone doesn't take photos at the moment (unless I buy a memory card which ironically, I am almost bound to forget to do)

The reason I ask is - if my distant memories of trigonometry and my understanding of perspective serve me well - the fact that you are sitting at an angle to the crossbar at the Bramall Lane end means that it will not appear to be in line with the seats, even if both the seats and the crossbar are horizontal.

Now that was a slope, across the pitch, at the pavilion end.
Sadly no pavilion now - don't think it's even used for sport any more.

As we approached Whitely Woods Road at the level of the top football pitch, I noticed the concrete blocks set into the ground, with the holes for the goalposts still very visible. I paced out the space between them, and it was the regulation 8 yards ( I have long legs), and stood there for a moment remembering the time when Hodgy and Gerry Summers were doing their coaching badges or some such, and came one day a week to coach the school team. It was in that very goal when in a practice match at the end of the coaching session I managed a spectacular save, tipping the ball over the bar, and heard Hodgy say 'Great save, lad'. Funnily enough, I can't remember in detail all my howlers, except that they were usually the defenders' fault. That moment with Hodgy was the highlight of my goalkeeping 'career'. He was a truly nice guy.

We played 1st team Rugby Union for High Storrs up there. I had a look on Google Maps the other day but I can’t see where it was - Cottage Lane or Ivy Cottage Lane from memory nearly 40 years ago.

That would probably have been at Castle Dyke, which is off Ringinglow Road, to the left, about quarter of a mile above Bents Green Shops/Hammer and Pincers. Whitely Woods only had 2 crap football pitches and 2 crap cricket pitches, basically consisting of sloping mud. All rugby, and other football and cricket, were played up at Castle Dyke. Much better playing surfaces, and on a day of good weather the wind dropped to gale force. I once played a match there for the under-13s where the ref introduced a rule about the ball not having to go out of the penalty area from a goal-kick; I couldn't even get the ball to the penalty spot. Second half, with the wind behind us, was the nearest I ever came to scoring with a kick out of my hands.

The sports pitches are still there, but I don't remember rugby pitches there. No reason I should - I never played rugby. Celebrity alert: George Long has been training (Impressively hard) there recently.

I played football and cricket at all mentioned venues being a local. High Storrs cricket nets were best when practising. Brutal. Went on to play for Sheffield at cricket and could not get to YCC nets at Wakefield after impressing at trials for both Sheffield and Bankers(Abbeydale CC) I always wonder what might have been....

yes they were on the right. Just after the right turn onto Common Lane.

You could park on Ringinglow Road or get access to them from Cottage Lane.

Now this is one for the real oldies - I am led to believe many moons past there was an amateur team called Fulwood United?

There was a very well know "old" referee - and I mean really old, like 60 - very well know in and around Sheffield who used to ref there and all over Sheffield.

I played there from Ecclesall School as well. I have looked at an oldish map, and on the left of Cottage Lane there are playing fields marked (near the 'Rec', if you remember that). The building there was a school for children with health problems many years ago. I wasn't aware of playing fields behind it, but that might be them.

I got David Frain caught at the covers but when Wilder came in , he was bashing my bowling and the captain took me off. He got 49 runs that day but my team beat Woodseats Social.
