The kid I'm thinking of was a young lad who we got from Man U in the 80's and he played a number of games, he looked like he could make a promising player, but we never found out. He had a lot of dark, really curly hair. Maybe that wasn't "Patterson", I've got "McDowell" in my head now for some reason. I know, nothing like "Patterson", but it will come to me eventually! Apologies if he's been mentioned, but Brian Marwood was absolute shite for United. We paid a fair bit of money for him at the time as well (for us anyway).

Special mention to Ian Hamilton and Paul Thirlwell who I fucking hated at the time. Both shocking players. Ashley Sestanovich was crap as well.

There are some players that I’m amazed to read on this thread. Martin Smith was perhaps the only player worth watching in Heath’s spell as manager. Academy grads like Evan Horwood, who had barely 10 minutes in a United shirt? Shouldn’t even be mentioned. John Ebbrell looked excellent in that first half vs Reading – precisely the type of player we’d been missing since we let Cowans go the previous summer, made the midfield tick and I think set up the only goal that half. It was a huge and unfortunate blow for him to get injured when he did. Saying Ebbrell was “utterly shit” is like saying “Paul Coutts offered fuck all for us when recovering from that broken leg”.

Whitehurst. Offered nowt as a footballer and the only thing anyone remembers about him is threatening to chin Neil Ruddock.

Really unfair, he was brought in for about £40k for our promotion push with Paul Wood. Both contributed in their own ways and Billy’s experience really helped. I remember the away game at stoke where he intimidated their central defenders all game and when he got subbed you could see them relax appreciably, he softened them up and he did this to other defences too.
From what Bassett and others said he also galvanised the dressing room and helped toughen the younger players up.
I also seem to remember a home game v qpr New Year’s Day when we won 1-0 and due to an injury he played centre half.
Look he was no world beater but imo unfair to add him in this post.

He played for us when he was a young lad. He was another one of those that came from Man U with the promise of being a great future player but he never went on to really live up to his billing. Coach now at Man U apparently.
