Was always told that years ago there was another pub on Pond Hill apart from Black and Queens. Any ideas?

There was the Sun Inn on top of two faced hill leading up to the flats. Colin who had the Link was the landlord there. Not really Pond Hill though.

This is where the young Bert did his early drinking. Three View attachment 76653 pubs in a square and another 50 yards away.
I used to travel t' comp on the 98 past this idyllic scene. I remember a peculiar piece of graffiti on the wall opposite the butchers proclaiming "Omega Mob" whoever they were.

One bad winter despite being told not to, we went "skating" on the frozen pond behind the working men's clubat dinner time. Luckily no one died.

Would love to know where my "A Pub On Every Corner" went. Few errors but still invaluable.

Bert's ancestral home is on land adjoining that pond. Still in the Bert family ownership.

S &E was a milk depot ,they built a gym in its place ,Im also off Bannerdale ,but we always used Victoria Wine at the bottom of Woodseats.

Yep, well remember that Victoria Wine. The beer shop is still there on the corner of Archer Road and Ulverston Road. I went in it fairly recently for the first time in about 35 years!

Have you got the “pub on every corner” book?

Griffin and Black Bull had good football teams back in the day
Bert used to watch the Black Bull when they played on the very sloping Whitley Lane pitch before moving to Thorncliffe.
Peter Swan once turned out for a pub team there when he was banned.
Black Bull has a great centre forward called Gordon Walker who went on to play for Grimsby.
Bert was also present when The Griffin first formed a team, most of the lads were from the Yew Lane area.

Bert was a Griffin man.

The Griffin was a nice pub , as was the White Bear off photo to the right . It had a great darts team which I think once included World Champion Dennis Priestley .

The Black Bull served a lovely pint and was noted for the singing of local carols at Christmas , led by Ike Baxter , a local cricketing legend who played for Whitley Hall well into his sixties .

The Regency. Bert's father Bert Snr built the extension.
