Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

I've only just discovered this but if you place your cursor over the photos it will reveal their names.
First photo reveals Harry Johnson.
Goalkeeper Sam Bartram, Charlton Athletic 1946.
I often look at Getty images and quite a few times they give the wrong info. I am with XM657 in thinking that it isnt Harry Johnson and I am not sure if the other is Sam Bartram.

Apologies HBT. As you and I are approximately the same age and with your pashun for the goalkeeping fraternity, my intention was to put a smile on your face.
He was always in the football annuals of the day I remember and when he came to the Lane in 53/54 it was pointed out to me to watch him. I had been playing in goal for school for the two previous years.
I was very amused. And it was typical of me to dive in (appropriate goalkeeping term) and assume it was a Utd keeper. I think it was the cap that made me think Jack Smith, as I associated his name with stories about his cap.The one in the photo looks a bit posh.
I did see Bartram - I will look out the scrapbooks to see if I have any pictures of him in action at the Lane. I suspect he had finished by the time the scrapbook starts.

It does have a feel of Walkley or Crookes about it. From other photos I have identified the property as no.26. Also it may be a cul de sac. There is one more house to the left and then an open space with a large building beyond. See pics.View attachment 76380View attachment 76381
I think it may be a Jewish family, Father, Mother, defo 3 sons, maybe daughters also. At the time the photo was taken many Jewish families lived in the Ecco road area, especially the roads upto what are now the Botanical Gardens. Only a theory though

Does one of the blokes have his fly undone?

Lastly below, a rear view taken from the top deck of the original Sainbury's car park.

Just further along Archer Road there was a S&E building (can't remember what they did).

When I was about 13 we had to go out from school (Abbeydale) individually to a local company to find out how their business operated. Anyway I chose that S&E business.

Went there all innocent and all around the factory there were centre folds from Playboy, Mayfair, Penthouse etc. I couldn't concentrate on what the boss man was telling me.

Got back to school and had to make it all up about what the company did.

Further on Archer Road there's an off licence. I live just off Bannerdale in the early 1990's and used to use that off licence as they'd sell real ale in a 4 pint plastic container.

If I remember correctly, S&E had their dairy round the back, on the site of what later became Esporta and soon to be(?) Home Bargains, I think.
I think maybe their office fronted onto Archer Road, just along from Laycock's
I've got a photo of the old site and entrance gates somewhere, I'll put up later.

Who is behind the bandage's.

It was the site of the dairy. The off licence or beer off is still open. It was called small beers, not sure if its called that now. Laycocks used to make clutches for Nissan? as part of the GKN group I think. They were bought out by LUK and moved out to Wales Bar. Laycocks sports club is still open (or was) and is situated opposite the old laycocks firm, at the junction with Fraser rd.

Whilst I am very often wrong about many things, believe me SB it is Mr Bartram in the picture, been looking at his 'fizzog' for the last 67-8 years to my knowledge.

This might be of interest, 1966, Midland Station and the Hope Valley stopper in platform 7.

God what memories, most Sundays all year round mid/ late 50's hikeing. Memory says departure times, one an hour on the hour, last one back 17-1800. When we were a bit late , made for the tracks and walked to the nearest station, bit hairy when dark and 'pissculating' but we were young and daft.
Fantastic photo with the lad in it, just sums it all up, no words needed.

No, I was still in short trousers at his age.
Anorak alert ... Good old 46485, class 2
2-6-0 built 1946, weight 47 tons 2 cat. The 9c shed plate means in is from Reddish engine shed, Stockport

I remember going on an organised ramble and seeing the train we should have caught home steaming somewhere up Hope Valley. We eventually made it to Grindleford and had to wait ages for the next train. In those days the station was still manned and I remember sitting in the gloom of a gas lit waiting room in front of a roaring coal fire until our train came. From memory we were in the waiting room on the Manchester side of the station and had to walk up the path and over the road bridge to catch our train. Also, isn’t what is now the station cafe the former station ticket office?

Just had a look and it finished its life at Buxton shed.

Social club still open and always seems to be busy when I happen to drop in a few times a year

If that's a smoking jacket he's wearing, could be George Sanders (one for the aged). If not it's a dead cert. to be Bert?
Due to lockdown a crisis of enormous proportions has descended on the Bert residence. He's unable to go to Cuba and replenish his stock of home made cigars, $5 for 100.
His smoking jacket hangs in his study unused.

Here you go, Bornablade , I've unearthed the photo of the entrance to the old S&E dairy on Archer Road. You can still just about make out the writing on the posts. Date of photo: June 1990

Anyone remember the dairy on Broadfield Rd near to Heeley Baths? Memory is crap, but I thought they had a life-size plastic cow in a display window. Did I imagine this? 🤔
