Joe Ironside away at Doncaster in 2013.

I think it was about the first time we'd seen him. We were 2-0 down when he was subbed on and he changed the game. From memory he made the first and scored the equaliser. I remember it feeling like a win as we'd been nowhere near Donny till Ironside came on. I really thought we'd found a diamond after that game. Now he's at Macclesfield 😒.

Still best of luck to the lad.

Off the top of my head I think Ironside's shot hit the post and Kitson stuck the rebound away for the equaliser.

Not sure why, but my first thought was James Thomas who'd really looked out of his depth for 6/7 games before playing well and calmly clipping a 3-2 winner against Preston after being 0-2 down early on. I remember thinking he was only a young lad, and now that he'd finally scored he'd be great for us.

He wasn't, unfortunately.... Though he did have a decent season or two at Swansea after he left us.

Hopefully something to keep the boredom away. Can you think of a time when a player you thought was truly shocking had a good game that almost changed your opinion of them?

My United watching time only properly started in 2004, so the one that instantly pops into my head is Tony McMahon against Crawley. Scored 2 30-yard freekicks in the same game and very nearly changed my opinion of him from awful to poor.

Can anyone think of a better example, or educate me on other players like this before my time.
Michael Doyle at Rochdale.
Nick Montgomery v Pigs in League Cup 2nd Leg when he was just starting out.
TBF Bobby Davison & Ade Akinbye were both poor for us overall but both gained Legend status for one game they played.

Jagielka shouldn't even be mentioned on this thread.
Why? One of your favourites? I mentioned he was poor in one particular match, which he was, and that he was a better centre half, which he was. 40 England appearances as a centre back not a central midfielder. Clear enough.

The thread was for awful players who had one good game.

What you were describing in Jagielka, was a very good player having one awful game.

Correct. I originally misunderstood the post. Point still stands. He was better than very good.

He was great that day, as were a few others, namely JCR. I don't think McNulty was as bad as people made out, I definitely wouldn't say he was awful. He just wasn't going to play ahead of Sharp, and playing them both together wouldn't have made sense.

Good finisher but looked slow and not in shape from the games I saw. You have to have a professional mindset and dedication as well as the ability. Plenty have only had the latter (step forward Mr Baxter as a prime example).

If I was Jose Baxter, not a day would go by where I didn’t look at Chris Basham and think look where he is now, and I’m better than him. You have to wonder whether Baxter knows where the blame lies though.

Conor sammon after Newcastle, Peterborough and Doncaster at home where he received player of the match I also thought we have a good striker here. How wrong I was, he had some awful games.
I was thinking about him in the Doncaster game. Scored one, made one, looked the business.

After that he was terrible in every game I saw

Laurent D'Jaffo vs Burnley. We won 3-0 he won everything in the air and scored a 25 yarder!

Chris Guthrie.
Hat trick of headers v Halifax Town in a 4 2 away League cup win in 1975.
Jostein Flo two goals at Enfield 1994.

Yes fully agree he was awful after that and seemed to get worse every game

For me there’s only one winner of this thread and that’s Connor Sammon and his performance against Peterborough, my god he was shite after that game. I can’t remember how many open goals he missed but it was a lot

I still wish we could bring Jose Baxter on anytime we have a penalty then take him straight off again. Aboslute top bins pens every time.

Cant recall us having 1 single pen in the PL, correct me if im wrong though. If we havent surely we must be theonly team not to have one.
Norwood scored one v Brighton.

Bert is livid, how can The Lion of Hillsborough be in the awful players category? He put in loads of decent performances, hard as nails and of course, he banged that one in right in front of the Unitedites on the Leppings Lane End.
Agree wholeheartedly Bert! Always put a shift in did the Tin Man. He didn't do too badly for a man with metal plates in his back and that April Fools day goal at the pigs( is it really 20 years ago?) is etched in the memory...

And of course the unforgettable time when he marched on the pitch at the end in his suit looking to bang out the Wolves defender who'd annoyed him. Silent Blade will tell you the bloke's name.

I thought Michael Higdon would be a reyt signing for L1 after his debut.
Same with Connor Sammon and James Hanson (who played his part tbf) 😦
Then we got Leon in 😀

Jay Mceveley had his best game at Old Trafford in the fa cup, I never before & never again did I see him have such a solid defensive display so much so I thought the real mceveley had been held hostage on the coach. because how can you look decent v Rooney, Mata & Martial but absolutely useless v league 1 opposition

I thought that was also Connor Sammons best game. Played deep, fought for everything and ran his bollocks off.
