Phillip Scofield’s been checking a few lads out for them.
Apparently he can do it in less than 60 secondsAre they wanting to sell their cars?
Les and Banana could provide insight into this. 'There are no scouts'![]()
Why do we encourage this?Seeing you asked.
Matthew Benham owns a company called Smartodds.
Research & Analysis for Sporting Events - Smartodds
Smartodds specialise in providing in-depth quantitative and qualitative research and analysis on numbers sporting events all over the world.www.smartodds.co.uk
The purpose of Smartodds is in effect to create betting markets which apparently is a commodity purchased around the world. If you want to know the odds of Ying Tong FC v U Fucka in Indonesia, Smartodds will have done the statistical analysis, using analysts employed to watch and "mark" football matches all around the globe. Fuck knows how it works but I know it's clever. It started I think by Matthew Benham trying to spot anomalies in the market which he would bet big on which is how he initially made a lot of money. He's not allowed to do that now for football - Smartodds doesn't just cover football though. Banana is better at explaining this than me.
Anyway, the benefit to Brentford is access to a huge amount of statistical analysis on players, clubs, leagues all around the world. What is looked for is under performance or players that are under valued. It's not just a "moneyball" approach though - mostly it is is just traditional scouting like every other club, I think we just are able to measure and match what we need better than a lot of clubs. There is a huge amount of planning - the club always says that they have players identified for at least two windows in advance and have targets to replace every player that leaves. We had a technical director who ran the system brilliantly in a guy called Rob Rowan who tragically died at the age of 28. At the time, every Brentford fan would have been fearful of how that might affect us as he really was the driving force behind recruitment and attracting players to the club. He left a huge hole in the club.
The players you have - John Egan was definitely targeted based on stats in his Gillingham days, Jack O'Connell Mark Warburton / Matthew Banham knew from their knowledge of good young players because of the NextGen series which was a European Under 19 league that Matthew Benham funded - now defunct after FIFA introduced the UEFA Youth League.
I read a lot of people say that they should buy our scouting team. There's no doubt we employ very good people throughout Europe who would be good scouts for other clubs (I hear our French scout is wanted by Man U) but they would not be as effective without the edge that Smartodds brings. The system is simply not something that can be bought just to benefit a single football club.
There you go, bet you're glad you mentioned me now.See you next year.
