The only other pair of fixtures to compare with this was in 1978: Liverpool at home in the League Cup, playing with strong team, European Cup holders, United won 1-0; 2 days later played River Plate in a friendly (part of Sabella transfer deal) at the Lane. They were South American champions, and had 5 of the squad which had just won the World Cup for Argentina; United lost 2-1. Here's hoping for at least one victory this week, and no repeat of the long-term decline which followed the 1978 fixtures.
