Who will go down as a legend?

Just watching the 'one of our own' podcast with Tony Currie and it made me think... Which players from this team will be talked about with similar esteem to TC? His era was a long way before my birth, let alone when I began to take an interest in football so my only experiences of him are old faded videos and the many stories my Dad told me as a kid.

I know for many he is always going to be the greatest and it would take something very special to change that opinion but this isn't intended to be a thread challenging that or comparing anyone to him, I want to know who you think you will refer to in particular when telling a story of the legendary Wilder era of Sheffield United.

For me Billy Sharp will be remembered with great fondness, the blade who never gave up on his dream and then fittingly scored our first prem goal on our return.

TL;DR Which current blade(s) will go down in the book of legends?
 



Basham has a bit of a cult status. I think he'll go down as a Blades legend. He just seems to really reasonate with the average fan - humble, hard working & grown with us all of the way on the journey. Every season we talk of a Basham replacement, every season he proves us wrong.

His back story (the article in the Athletic) really cemented it for me. A special & rare character in modern football.

Outside of Basham... Fleck could get there. Egan has a little further to go, but if we have a sustained period of improvement in the Prem & he takes on the Captaincy then he may achieve it.

Sharp already is there.

Other players will be fondly remembered, but maybe not quite at 'legendary status' in my opinion.

Nearly added Fleck and Bash myself tbf. Always been fond of Fleck, particularly since the Wednesday game where they won 0-0 and he was winding them up smirking all game. Top lad.

Think legendary status has a positive correlation with time. As the years go by the memory can warp somewhat. Not to say that they weren't great players!
 
You can make a case for last year's side, but definitely all those who have been here from League One to Prem deserve legend status.

I guarantee there wasn't a single fan that watched them losing 3-0 to Southend that thought, let alone said out loud, "Don't worry, these'll have us in the top half of the Premier League in three seasons". There's turning things around, there's reviving a club, and there's that.

Basham, Sharp, JOC, and Fleck - you can't do more for the club than they have.
 
To fully understand the enormity of our achievements we have to look beyond 'this team'.

There are players that have appeared for us since August 2016 and are no longer seen as part of 'this team' who deserve to be seen as legends.

Just for one match alone Mark Duffy immediately springs to mind.

To treat the current team in isolation is disrespectful of where we've come from and we lose sight of what we are all about.
 
There are plenty of players who in time will be remembered by Blades fans as legends, but the difference with TC is that he was known away from the Lane. Ask neutrals who United's greatest player is and an older generation will say TC, others will possibly say Brian Deane.

How many of our players in recent decades are synonymous with United to neutrals? Arguably Billy Sharp, but that's as much for his career on the whole than just in a red and white shirt.

I'm not sure yet that we have any players that neutrals will look on as United's greatest. For that you need a player that other fans would all want in their team. We certainly have players who are becoming well known, Fleck being the obvious candidate at the moment, Lundstram (though more for FF), maybe Baldock too.

At present we definitely have more cult players than legends, and deservedly so.

Wilder & Knill (statue worthy if we won a trophy or got into Europe)
Sharp
(statue worthy)​
Basham
Fleck
Duffy (for that goal)

Honourable Mentions

Didzy
Leon Clarke
Jack O'Connell
Enda
Norwood
Moose (if he keeps chipping away with goals)

Duffy will sit alongside Bobby Davidson. Not quite "legend" of the club but puts big smiles on faces when thought about.
 
It all depends on how you define “legend”.

For me it would have to be a player with a realistic shout of making it into an all time Blades XI.

Generally that means players who have performed consistently at the highest level. You will have the odd exception to the rule; Sharp, Agana, Edwards, Brown, Sabella because they scored a hatful of goals and got the crowd on their feet.

For me none of the current team are at that level yet, however that’s not to say that there aren’t a few who are capable of hitting that level fairly soon. Ask at the end of the season and it might be a different story.
 
Essentially they all could be, it depends who decides to stay here when more money is offered elsewhere. However Basham and JOC and Fleck as said above with the rise from L1 should definitely be classed as legends soon.
 
If our success was to stop now, it has to be Wilder and Sharp as the two that will be most fondly remembered over the years.

Obviously the rest of the team will always hold a special place for us, but those two have done it as fans. I can imagine Sharp being around the club in some form or other for years to come and hopefully Wilder too.

Although if we manage to win silverware or get into Europe, a few more memorable moments for Fleck would stick him firmly in the history books as one of our greatest ever servants.

Tbf they all deserve hero status after the last 4 seasons.

I think the term “legend” is thrown around too liberally most of the time. It’s a pity really, because it cheapens it for me. Having said that, I think the current team, as a whole, has legendary status because of what they’ve achieved in climbing from League 1 to where we are now, and in style too.

When it comes down to calling individual players “legends” I’d reserve that for the most special players who have made an outstanding contribution to our club over a number of years. Players who are held in regard as being among the very best at what they did and did it consistently for many years for us. Great servants to the club who had a major contribution to it.

TC is a legend for those reasons. Of the current squad there’s just one for me, Billy Sharp. There are many others in waiting though. Oh and the manager is a legend already!
 
I think Wilder has about already achieved that status, for creating the current era. Only an acrimonious departure would be likely to damage it. At the moment the players are of such a similar standard (bloody good, and improving) that no individual stands out above the rest. Currie and Woodward stood out in part because some of their team-mates were ordinary. The one who could have become a legend is Harry Maguire, if he had stayed with us and been part of the current set-up; and that is not a criticism of the lad, just an observation.

Since TC only Brian Deane came close but even he fell short of TC.

None of the existing.
