Ivan toney

Looked quality again today this lad in Peterborough’s final match of the season. I don’t want to tell Wilder what to do (as he is god) but I reckon Ivan Toney could be the new Toney Agana!

Just watched him score 2 for Posh. 23 this season. Looked like he could be a good development player.

Just going through a purple patch. Over 160 league appearances already, mostly at league 1 level with a strike rate of 1 in 4. Think that’s his level. Not good enough for the championship never mind the top end of it
8 goals in 9 for this lad in L1 this season, I reckon championship clubs will be in for him come January... he looks the real deal imo... 238 appearances by the age of 23 years old is not bad going.

I hadn't realised already but Chris actually managed Ivan when he was at Northampton in their promotion season.

Can we finally be that PL club who buys up all the talent and ships them out on loan until they come good...

Or if they're good enough, get them in the squad.

I know they'll be plenty of examples of failures but Karlan Grant at Huddersfield is a prime example of it working well very recently.

Are you his agent?
Yet another purple patch and your banging on about him. 196 league appearances and 60 goals. A strike rate of 1 goal every 3.25 games in the lower leagues. Released in 2018 by Newcastle who had had quite a while to figure out he isn’t good enough. Currently playing in a team that’s creating chances for fun. He’s league 1 for a reason. If, after almost 200 games no other top team bar the magpies haven’t taken a chance on him it’s for a very good reason.
He just isn’t good enough

Are you his agent?
Nope, but i thought it might be interesting to revive this one since he is still playing well

He just isn’t good enough
I'm not going to make any bold predictions that he will be a world-beater but he's only 23... plenty of current PL strikers have plied their trade in L1 in there early 20s...

I am intrigued to why you are so sure he isn't good enough

Because there are thousands of experts in football and since Newcastle took a punt 5 years ago he’s done bugger all. He had an average year last time out (16 goals..... average league 1 stuff) but is hardly the type who’s having the scouts flocking. If he was that good or showing the potential we would have heard Peterborough’s mouthy chairman spouting a ridiculous price tag by now. If the lad proves me wrong then great but I’d be gobsmacked if he does

Plenty of our squad have played a large number of games in the lower leagues. Not saying Toney is good enough, but given where much of our squad has come from you make a poor point.

I was going to write a post but this basically sums it up. So many PL players including our own are now playing at the very top after large spells in L1 and lower. Sometimes it just clicks in place for a player, it could do for Toney too, I think we need to see him at Championship level before we dismiss him

Toney may or may not make it but the more games you’ve played the less likely you are to make it to the top. They then become the exception. Only Duffy and Fleck spring to mind who had played anything like the same number of games as him. The difference being that they had never had a chance at the top before. Toney, though young has. He may buck the trend and be a late developer ala Ian Wright but as I said, they then become the exception

Just look at Vardy. At Fleetwood Town until he was in his mid 20s. Gone on to be one of the Premier League's top strikers and over 20 England caps.

Will he be the next Vardy, probably not. But, like you point out, can't judge a player jusy because he's been at the lower leagues the whole time.

He was always shite when I saw him.

But in the last 2 seasons he seems to have focused on turning himself into an out and out centre forward and is clearly a capable goalscorer.

The athletic base is there so he is one with potential to step up. Doubt it will ever be to PL level though.

I think that's a fair assessment

I was going to point to our own John Lundstram who was picked up 2 years ago at the age of 23.

Although just had a look at a few of his goals and there is something that doesn't look 'accomplished' about him, can't put my finger on it.

I used to bang on about him a season or two ago but now I have to agree with you. Lads having a good spell but if we were going to sign anyone from Boro I'd want it to be MM.

Not suggesting we should sign him but I remember him being mentioned on here...

Had to share this; what a finish!

12 goals in 17 games in league 1 so far this season. Still only 23, could be worth a punt.

Huddersfield took on with Grant, it’s not out of the realms of possibility.
But a) Huddersfield were a championship side by pretty much January in all but status, b) we have a plethora of strikers and c) we can attract proven talent at this level now

Let him go up to the Championship, carry it on, and we’ll take him from someone there

You may be right. However if we could move Clarke on I think Toney would be ideal as a fifth choice striker. If in training and the minutes he get wilder doesn’t think he’s ready we can always loan him to the championship.

If he goes to the championship and performs before we sign him, then his value will quadruple and then he reaches a price where he’s not a punt, he would have to perform.
