Might be some legs in this as he has a history with Wilder, effectively Wilder signed DCL on loan from us last season to replace Toney - In general NT fans thought that Toney was the better prospect.
 

Shrewsbury have made some shrewd signings. Haha geddit.

I seem to recall one of Roygbiv 's threads saying exactly the opposite - Northampton fans not being bothered about Toney leaving as they had DCL.
 
Not really a 'incoming' more speculation on my part, but hear me out:

Ivan Toney started his career at Northampton, making his debut as a 16 year old where he displayed the pace and strength combined with the raw ability/technique of someone who could potentially play at the highest level.

In 2015, Toney's manager, Chris Wilder described the player as the best young forward in the bottom 2 divisions. He was later sold to Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee.

While at Newcastle, Toney was farmed out to various clubs on loan, failing to ever really make his mark, though his recent spell at Scunthorpe saw him net 8 goals in 16 games.

It is thought that Toney may be available to leave Newcastle this summer and considering the fact that we need a quick, powerful forward, on a budget, we could be a likely destination. Wilder seems to enjoy working with players who have a point to prove, and Toney fits that bill.

The finished article (a fast, strong, championship quality striker, with a record at this level) is almost certainly out of our price range, so taking chances on this sort of player is possibly our only option. Personally, I think he's worth a punt, based on his pace, physicality and recent 1 in 2 spell at Scunthorpe.

I'm half expecting us to be linked with him but am hoping we're not.

Every time I've seen him he's been shocking. Raw to say the least, never keeping hold of the ball.

But he is a decent physical specimen who can score goals and is the sort of profile of player to look at. Should be quite cheap. Him and Adam Armstrong will be allowed to leave Newcastle permanently. Both interesting prospects, especially Armstrong.

Nothing to argue with there. If you don't take risks you'll never discover if it was worth doing in the first place...if the immediate outlay is small, and we can get him on a contract that guards our backside while allowing us to extend if he performs, then well worth a punt. It's taking the step up that's the key, whether his desire matches his ability, but as Wilder already knows him it gives us a huge advantage in whether we decide to make a move.

No point Wilder throwing his toys out and then targeting players like this. From the people who post on here who are more in the know than most I believe Nahki Wells and Kasey Palmer are definite targets and better than these two

I don't think it's a case of either or......if one player cost next to nothing, responds to everything that's asked of him, and shows the type of potential that, like John Fleck, will reward us in future, then isn't it worth a punt? I don't think any of this precludes buying more established players, and I agree that what happened last season means that we need to bring in players more than able to compete at this level, but quite possibly able to perform at a higher level than the one we're currently a part of.

I'm not suggesting we don't sign Palmer or Wells, I think they would be great signings and have far more of a track record.

However, Palmer and Toney play different positions and we wouldn't be the inly club after Wells - essentially we should keep our options open and I think Toney is an option.
 
Nakhi Wells plus one younger prospect (I'd go for Armstrong over Toney, or maybe Mo Eisa) would represent really god business in my view.
 
Pointless taking chances on these kind of strikers who 'might make it''. Look at Lavery, Wilson, McNulty etc. We need someone who can go straight into the first team. I'm hoping that Wilder signing an extension is an indication that there's that kind of.money available.

If.not Wyke from Bradford would be my punt.

As I wrote in my post #9, why does it have to be either or?

If a deal can be struck with a player that won't cost too much, why not buy one (that's all, not a battalion, just one) so that they can develop alongside better quality players? If they respond in the way we'd hope for then surely the outlay is a no-brainer? Given the rising costs of good young players, is it too much of a risk to see if we can find one in the lower leagues? In the meantime, by all means look for the established players you refer to. But given injuries, suspensions etc, don't we need to have players who might be called upon should such a situation arise?

You're right, Lavery and McNulty simply weren't good enough. As for Wilson, he came with a pedigree, so personally I won't blame Wilder for taking a chance. As we saw, Wilson's failure to impress didn't pass Wilder's attention, and he soon found it impossible to make his mark here. Does any of this mean we don't take a risk, especially if the costs attached aren't crippling? Is every decision going to be right? It's referred to as taking a risk, and as long as the deal makes sense then isn't that what we should do? Man City chose to release Brooks, it's what happens when you have an abundance of riches, but someone else's risk taking saw the Blades pick up a class player, and at what cost? It's the nature of the game, you do the sums, assess the player, and if it makes sense you sign him.

While non of us can know a player's true value, or what our exact budget is, I think those of us with common sense can distinguish between what's affordable for a club like us, and what isn't.

I was nodding along with you there until the last bit.

I went with a mate to watch Bradford at Rotherham a few months ago and Wyke looked poor. Despite him being quite a big lad, he was made to look like a little lad by Rotherham's big defenders. He had no plan b after being outdone physically either.
