RIP Gary Speed - 8 Years

A testement to Gary Speed is that no supporter of any club had a bad word to say about him. He was respected by everyone.

Liverpool fans, Sunderland fans, even Wendy fans had nothing but good things to say about him.

That's rare in football.

It was a sad day for everyone when he died. He was one of English football's classiest people on and off the pitch. I always felt proud that he chose us to finish his playing career at. He could've gone anywhere, but he chose the Blades.

A lot of these big money, whiney little prima donnas (Pogba, Neymar), could learn a lot from Gary Speed's career.
 
Fantastic footballer potential to be a great manager, sadly we will never find out.

Remember the day like it was yesterday. Just nipped to Morrisons on the Sunday and popped the news on in my car. Absolutely stunned to hear it and it affected me massively for a considerable time afterwards, not least because I’ve had a few depressive episodes in my life

Hit home that day that it can happen to anyone if you fall victim of an awful illness.

Its him being on Football Focus the day before that always comes back to me. Absolutely no signs whatsoever. “Celebrity” deaths dont affect me but this was just so out of the blue and felt so close to home, even though I never met him. Just hope his lads and family are doing alright.

I know mate, but it's not really about that. Someone could have a life 99% of us could only dream of and get cancer. Same with mental health. Anyway, RIP, great player and by every account a great man
 
Speed was an excellent model professional footballer and well-liked in the game. That doesn't mean he would have made a good manager though - and sadly no one ever found out. His stint with us was just 3 months before he took the Wales job. And his death came in less than a year after that.

It's not exactly unusual that a severely depressed person can appear right as rain one minute but take their lives the next. They are not in a rational state of mind. They may also be very adept at giving a totally different outward impression. His death wasn't a clear-cut case of intentional suicide though.

There were some interesting things that came out about Speed after his death. Reports of a huge row with his wife the night before. A text that he sent to her several days before in which he'd mentioned suicide. His mother describing him as always being "a glass half-empty" person. His wife describing him as "a closed character". The coroner unable to say whether the death was "intentional". All we know is, he's dead.

He was a great ambassador for the game of football and we were privileged to see him. But he was only with us a short time and in my opinion he is perhaps a footballing legend but not a Sheffield United "club legend". I wasn't impressed that he walked out on us to take the Wales job when he did. I think the Sheffield United manager job was too much for him and he should probably have never been appointed in the first place. But that was the genius McCabe at work once again, sacking Blackwell after 3 games and putting Speed (with no previous managerial experience) in charge.

I think his popularity as a player and the tragedy of his death are two things that mean we will continue to remember him for a long time to come. RIP.
 
Wow. 8 years.
I've no doubt he would have been a great manager and started the ascent of Wales to were they are now internationally.

He had a job that 99% of us could only dream of. Without knowing his exact circumstances I’m not sure any of us would want to suffer what he went through. For anyone else in that position, I really hope that they can get help, because it does make a difference.

I still think of Robbie Savage trying his best to hold it together whilst being bombarded by questions. The poor lad just lost his best mate. I wanted to give him a hug.

I empathise entirely mate. Some days can feel very dark indeed.
