This Saturday sees the first-ever Premier League meeting between United and The Clarets. Chris Wood missed Burnley’s home defeat with Chelsea last Saturday with a ‘tight hamstring’, Jack Cork returned for the Chelsea game with a ‘minor fracture of the shoulder blade’ but Johann Berg Gudmundsson faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury on international duty. Danny Drinkwater remains sidelined with an ankle injury picked up in an altercation in Manchester. The Chelsea loanee is still at least two weeks away from a first team return with the 29-year-old likely to be given a run-out in a Under-23 game first.

Without a game between the clubs in almost nine years, most Blades’ memories will go back to 25th May, 2009 when the clubs met at the ‘new’ Wembley Stadium for the Championship Play-Off Final to see who would play in the Premier League. The crowd of 80,518 (not beaten since at a Blades match) saw yet another big game ‘no-show’ by The Blades under Kevin Blackwell and saw Burnley win by a single goal from Wade Elliott to secure a top-flight place for the first time in 33 years.

Despite a good start to the season - winning their first four games – Burnley were relegated after just one season in the PL. Season 2013-14 saw Burnley promoted back to the Premier League as Championship runners-up to Leicester City where both have remained.

And that it. I’ve been going to Burnley since the 70s and have very few memories of this shithole of a village, which looks like Royston Vasey on a bad day. In 1975, I saw my first ‘Mohican’ haircut in Burnley, which is still probably the height of fashion. The side terracing at Turd Moor used to share home and away support which made for some interesting objects being passed back and forth all afternoon.

One of the most significant Burnley games in recent years didn’t even feature United. On 15th May, 1984 – with United in the last promotion place in Division Three and having played our last match – we were third on 83 points and Hull were also on 83 points and a 3-goal win at Burnley would see them pip us for promotion. A Brian Marwood brace put Hull 2-0 up (the second via an assist from Billy Whitehurst) and twenty minutes of the game remained. Hull failed to score again and we were up!

6th December 2003. The ‘Triple Assault’ team was breaking up and a 2-3 defeat at Burnley with no seasonal cheer between Neil Warnock, the ref. and Burnley manager Stan Ternent…

Men to Watch:

From left: Jay Rodriguez returned to Burnley this summer from West Brom for a fee of £5m. Matěj Vydra – signed from Derby – is unlikely to hit the 20 goals he scored for The Rams in the 2017-18 season. Ashley Barnes was signed from Brighton in January 2014. Chris Wood was an absolute steal when he signed for The Clarets from Leeds for £15m in August 2017. Finally, ex-Blade Matt Lowton signed for a mere £1m from United in June 2015 but now a pale imitation of the player he used to be.

The Manager:

Sean Dyche
has been in charge at Burnley since October 2012 and has been very impressive in his time at Burnley.

I’ve a vague recollection of seeing an ageing Gazza playing for Burnley at Bramall Lane, maybe around 2000-01. Remember him having a touch of class even though he was well past it at the time. Think we won comfortably.

1950's Childhood hero Alex Elder. Sent him loads of photos of that great team by post and he returned them all signed plus plenty more.

Blacklaw, Adamson, McIlroy, Douglas, Pointer. Memory fades re the rest.

My memory of Burnley is Woody getting sent off at Turf Moor

🎶They're here, they're there, they're everyfuckingwhere wooden seats, wooden seats🎶 wonder if they've got rid of them yet? 😂 and yeah, Burnley is a shithole

a couple of weeks after the battle of Bramall Lane, their manager Stan Ternent was in the papers the morning of the game saying Warnock should be thrown out of football and we should have points deducted ...not the wisest move as it wrote our team talk for us.

Can't believe it's 35 yrs since the Burnley / Hull game went with my cuz , his mate and his mates dad ,was one of the most nervous I've ever been at footy , great end to the game tho ,loads and loads of blades there too .

They didnt win their first 4 games at all. They lost at Stoke 2-0 first game then beat Man Utd 1-0 second game,Carrick missed a penalty for Man Utd. Get the facts right.

Ha ha I was only 16 so didn't get pissed we were in the stand behind the goal ,think most of the blades were on the open end opposite .
The hole in the road is a distant memory now wish it was still there now gave the town center some character and some " interesting " people too 😆

My first visit to BDTBL for a League match was the 0-2 defeat at the start of the 73-74 season.
We did a bit better in the next home game (which I missed)

The home match in December 2005. Could see fuck all due to the fog.

Burnley's captain that day was Ian Moore, Ronnie's son who would later become Ian Thomas-Moore upon marrying. It was a boring name to start with and adding your wife's name to yours just makes you look like a twat.

A 3-0 win for United with a brace from Phil Jagielka. Gazza got an ovation from the Lane when he was subbed but it was obvious he was well past his best.

Edit: having watched the video they were three cracking goals.

I was there that night too. We went in a minibus and some fucker from Hull twated one of the lads on the chin with a piece of 4x2. We dropped him off at the A&E and went to the match.
We went to collect him after the match only to be told he was going nowhere. His jaw was wired up to fuck.

You forget what a good goal scoring midfielder Jags was for us.

Who got the second there?

My only memory of Burnley is going away on a coach, awful weather, the M62 was shut because some lampposts had blown over. We had to weave our way across the Pennines and got there about ten minutes from the end. Can’t remember the score, just remember talking to Paul Heaton as we walked between Lancashire pubs en route, because it was quicker than sitting on the coach. Must have been about late 80’s early 90’s?
