It was Nether Edge Hall up to the mid 70s opened Tuesday , Thursday and Saturday.
The week they closed it down they left us the keys on a Thursday night and told us to lock up at the end of the night and put our money in an 'honesty box' About 20 of us all regulars ,I have never touched Southern Comfort since.

It’s a lovely drink until you’ve poisoned yourself with it. I haven’t touched it since 1987.

I would not venture to endanger you. But get yourself a Range Rover key fob, wear crimplene trousers, and drape a pastel coloured v-neck sweater over your silk shirt, unbuttoned to show the hairy chest, and you’re IN my friend. Eccy Road is where the action is. Or try the Dev at Dore on Thursday nights.
I'll be over next week. :)

I got absolutely bladdered on rum and black in Bailey’s in my misspent youth - when I finally managed to become vertical the following morning, my mum asked me to explain the new colour scheme in the bog...

Had a very good night in the Sicey, but refused a drink because I was driving home - someone pushed me to have one, so in a rash moment, I said “I’ll have a pint of Scampi Fries”.
The bastards duly bought said pint, and when the laughter died down, I became aware that a dozen people were looking pointedly at me.....
Every one, every fucking one, I had a mouth like the bottom of a parrot’s cage the following day.

I was a town regular 72

All my old haunts I got married 1982 after ten years of joy.
Met the mrs in Josies had my Stag Night on the Wicker walk.
Bert used to go to Josies with the Sheffield CID, entry was always free and one of the bouncers used to scurry to the bar to get the drinks.

By Nether Edge hall ,do you mean Turn ups ? Turn ups was great as I lived just over the hill ,and the Brincs was my local. Then it became flats and they moved it to the gas building on Commercial St.
Just prior to it closing they held yoof discos on a Saturday morning attended by 13/14 year olds. Played specials, madness, etc, so reckon 82ish. As an aside, were you still drinking in the brincs 85/86? I used to collect glasses for then landlord Dave Coxon? Think he had some tenuous link to United. He was a bastard to work for!!

Dave Coxon was in our books in the early 1970s but never played for the 1st team. The below photo is him in Summer 1972

The Wap and the legend that was Olga.

My cousin was a barman in the Buccaneer when Olga was there (as was the fat bastard bouncer whose name I now can't remember, but when it closed we each had a cannon). He followed Olga to the Wap and I and mates (including Blue Angels) had enormous respect for her. Knew her job and clientele did Olga. Think she went down to the Whetstone before retiring, but no one questioned Olga.

It was called Nether Edge Hall prior to the Turn Ups revamp. Notorious as a under age place on Thursdays particularly. Owned by the Vickers family.

Played one of our first gigs there. I still have some photos somewhere with all the glitter on the stage. Andy Taylor on guitar. John Drought on fretless bass, Howard Haberfield (Roadie to Mc'Loskies Apocalypse) on Hammond Organ and moi on drums. Great life then.

As Max Bygraves said, "I'm gonna tell you a story". :) I could bore you to death with copyright law, but suffice to say that 2017 was the date I scanned my negatives. All my photographs were taken between February 1969 and July 1970. Mind you I could have a time machine. :)

I looked at that picture Mad Mick before looking at the date, and was amazed this is as early as 1970! I would have said late 70s at least! The clothing isn't much different to what I remember in the late 70s/very early 80s :O

Is that Ian Porterfield in it? I only spotted after I quoted it 😂

Are you on the fb Sheff History? I just put up a load of my old pictures (1989) on there of around here. They all looked the same, and I didn't label them! so was asking for where I took them from.
Yes it's the old Assay office

I've never seen that before. What a shame not still standing. With the other side tarted up now, this whole street would have been excellent.

Any idea what happened to it? bomb/council/fire?

I had use of camera from Sheffield College of Art from September 1968 to July 1970. Around August 1969 we were given free reign to use the cameras anywhere. It could be 1969 but looking at others I took on the same negative strip it has to be in Spring. So it is definitely 1970.

I've viewed many many old photos of Wincobank and enjoyed them for the nostalgia, but from a totally aesthetic point of view this is the best I've seen so far and stands in it's own right as a photo for me, lovely shot of the gas works looming behind Barrow Road taken from Chapman Street. The demolition of the old back to back housing that started in the 60s clearly in progress there as well.
