I tried to find the posts, but failed. The houses are there and clearly built with stone from a building of a bygone era. But it appears they were built before St Paul’s was demolished. I am hoping the earlier poster sees this. This thread is a victim of its own success.
That’s a shame if true. I can’t remember where I heard the information but it might have been in Grapevine magazine or something similar . I’ve done some digging and found an article on the net about it, having read this it doesn’t really prove it either way but it does have some interesting stuff on there about the church. Hope this link works

I was a regular at Samantha’s from mid-seventies but didn’t care too much for the Northern Soul stuff. As I became more sophisticated I started going to Scamps in preference. By the time Josephines opened most of my clubbing pals had got married and weren’t allowed out to play. I occasionally went there but never really liked it very much. Attracted a very posy crowd.

I enjoyed Fannys and Climax with moderate success.

I resorted to chatting up girls in the workplace, shop girls, especially those off the perfumery departments, were my favourites, I liked the ones off lingerie too, and haberdashery, in fact, I liked them all! 😍

I still do! And it’s nice to see many of them recycling themselves after several rounds of marriage, 30 years or so and many divorces later, at the posh bars on Ecclesall Road. (Like Pointing Dog that was but isn’t called that now I’ve been told!).

They bait you with tight jeans, slack hides and Botox. They check out your key fob to see what car you are driving. And they wait, like preying mantis, ready to pounce!

Beware!o_O
I went in Baileys once before it became Romeos ,and don't forget the Top rank for grab a granny. easiest place to pull was Tiffanys. Agree with work stuff ,I had brilliant jobs for scouting ,I was a TV engineer at Rackhams for 2 years ,the best Xmas parties ever ,only staff allowed so it was about 20 women per bloke. My next job was manufacturing hairdressing goods ,and delivering them ,if the pay had been any good I would still be doing that now ;)

You said before you only went to Sams “occasionally”............

I would not venture to endanger you. But get yourself a Range Rover key fob, wear crimplene trousers, and drape a pastel coloured v-neck sweater over your silk shirt, unbuttoned to show the hairy chest, and you’re IN my friend. Eccy Road is where the action is. Or try the Dev at Dore on Thursday nights.

I worked at Cole Brothers. My dad thought I was a bit of a Jesse boy because it wasn’t a proper man’s job - being a shop assistant.

But it had its benefits! And I don’t just mean the partners annual bonus!

Given a choice of working with beautiful (eager) shop girls or hairy-arsed miners I think I made the right choice!

I went to Samantha's, Genevieve, Top Rank, Crazy Daisy, Romeo and Juliets and Josephines. Thursday nights at Nether Edge Hall (?)

In the late 1970's went to Faces on Charles Street. We would bypass the pay desk by going down a fire staircase. Remember seeing Phil Oakey in there. Strange haircut. Next time I saw him he was on Top of the Pops.

Looking back Samantha's was the best. I think it was a DJ called Stuart, played a fair bit of Northern Soul.

Ended my stag night at Josephines in 1983. By then I'd outgrown going to night clubs.

Brian Westlake was one of the DJ's at Samantha's. I vaguely remember a DJ called Stuart. It was a bit of a Northern Soul venue, back in the days when Northern Soul was a big thing and kids at school used to boast about going to the holy Mecca of Northern Soul - the "all-nighter" at Wigan Casino in Lancashire. I think Northern Soul was o.k. to dance to, not that I ever really liked dancing, especially that particular Northern Soul dance which involved shuffling from side to side with your feet whilst folding and unfolding your arms. Looked like one of them space invaders!

I preferred to be in Bed myself.

Well...that was the ultimate aim for me too. But you can't just walk up to a girl in a nightclub and ask her to go to bed with you, you see? You have to have a little dance around her handbag first, shout in her ear on the dance floor, wait till a new record comes on and she goes, "oh I don't like this one", then suggest you go sit down together and have a drink and a chat. Buy her a drink - sit and talk to her - be prepared for her to jump up suddenly when another record comes on that she likes. Go and join her for another dance around her handbag. Repeat until about 2am - then ask her onto the dance floor for the last "smoochy" dance, during which time you lean in towards her and kiss her gently on the neck and stroke her hair gently, telling her how beautiful it is. Ask her how she's getting home and when she says "a taxi" offer to share the cost with her. On the way back in the taxi have a little snog. Ask her for her phone number before she gets out and tell her you'll ring her to go out next week. Leave it a few days then phone up one evening and ask "is Bev there?" (or whatever her name is) and speak to her grumpy mother or fatha, who will ask, "who is it?" before fetching her to the phone. Then ask her out but make it sound like it's something that just crossed your mind, rather than something you are absolutely desperate to do. If she agrees, take her for a Berni. Get a few glasses of Piesporter down her, then, just as she's about to order the Berni coffee that comes in a little wine glass with cream floating on the top, suggest that she comes back to yours for a proper "filter" coffee. Take her back to yours. Step the snogging up a gear so that instead of lips to lips it becomes more of a wide-yawn, like two sea-lions in a courtship routine

lean back on the sofa, begin to loosen her clothing, and...and...and...

Oh bugger! I've forgotten the rest now!🤔

Think you could mean Ray Stuart who was DJ and Radio celeb on Hallam. Big mates with Johnny Cash and died quite youngish.
Used to love Shades and Speakeasy at Darnall.

By Nether Edge hall ,do you mean Turn ups ? Turn ups was great as I lived just over the hill ,and the Brincs was my local. Then it became flats and they moved it to the gas building on Commercial St.

It was called Nether Edge Hall prior to the Turn Ups revamp. Notorious as a under age place on Thursdays particularly. Owned by the Vickers family.
