Brutally honest Wilder on Talk Sport

He's fucking spot on. Our goalie makes a mistake and he's a wanker, the loanee makes (another) one, and the ground rises and sings his name.

If/as/when we go down (and we will if we lose at home every bastard week) Henderson and the new signings will fuck off and the rest of the squad-who deserve to stay up because they are all tremendously good enough- will be back where they don't deserve to be.

I love the fact that he has a winner’s mentality. However, I think he needs to be careful how he does it public. Consistently slating players to the media (I’m not saying he’s doing that, but it has been borderline in recent weeks), rarely ends well. I think the fans should be commended for how they reacted to Hendo following his mistake. I’ve no doubt that helped him refocus and save the Salah effort. Like it or not, sometimes people respond better to a cuddle rather than a rocket. The best leaders are able to understand and adapt to that.

Too honest, or just right?

Just right.

I've said it before, but in the past, at this club we've celebrated mediocrity, falling at the final hurdle. Oooh 3rd place and play offs is a great end to the season. Long before we had milenial snowflakes, we were constantly telling ourselves that we were ok being just ok...

What Wilder has brought is that winners mentality. That its ok to be pissed off with average. That we should be doing better.

If we'd lost 0-4 and were truly second best we could hold our hands up and say (like we did against Boro, Cardiff and whomever) we weren't good enough, either on the day or generally. Sometimes you have to be realistic

However, this season, in 7 games, we have matched or bettered every team we've played. And yes we lost yesterday because our often reliable and technically excellent keeper dropped one and let it roll over the line.

As Wilder said (perhaps on another interview), we have the talent, but mentally we have to be right too. Every single player yesterday has already proved they have the talent and that we should be doing the mental things better.

We didn't freeze in the big game, we turned up, we performed and yes both sides could've won, but we are a few errors away from beating sides like Liverpool.

What should be acknowledged though is that each game, we're becoming more confident in our ability and the interview with Baldock also proved that the mentality is there. We can be disappointed to lose that game and we should be.

Roll on Watford...

He doesn't slate players, he questions aspects of their game when he knows they can do better. Its a big difference.

Hendo is big enough to accept that he has dropped a bollock and Wilder isn't one to shy away from questions and dress things up. Wilder was bang on the money yesterday with the set up for the game.

Correct me if i am wrong, but i don't think Wilder brings in players that need cuddling

I don’t think it’s that black and white. Different situations call for different responses, even for the same person. It’s one of the reasons I feel Roy Keane was one of the best midfielders of his generation but makes an awful manager. SAF has spoken about instinctively knowing when to deploy the hairdryer, and when to put an arm around someone.

I agree Hendo should be big enough to accept his mistake, which I’m sure he has. Now imagine Wilder has had a word, great. Now imagine Hendo also hearing/seeing his manager criticising him in the media. That’s the bit I think he needs to be careful of.

I'm sure Wilder is aware of that and treats them as individuals but no point hiding from the truth .Henderson is not short on confidence (even arrogance) Wilder called him out to make him a better keeper. not to destroy him.

Genuinely, I think his interviews are great and I completely agree with his winner’s attitude. I hope he maintains that honest approach, but doesn’t cross a line with his criticisms. That’s all.

Wilder is spot on though. The mistakes are visible to a global audience. It's a bad error, and not the only one he's called out. Hopefully in the background a discussion will take place along the lines of, " have more faith in yourselves, you deserve to be here and this match shows it, now go and win a few". I think Wilder's record shows he has a feel for man management and the performances he's got out of Coutts, Freeman, Baldock, Stevens, Wright, Lundstram, Basham, JOC and Clarke bear that out in their careers.

The problem I think is when the managers starts to say that the players he's got aren't good enough, that's toxic for the team and Wilder has gone nowhere near that.

Some good comments on here, and mostly in support, but I suppose the only acid test is how the players react next week at Watford. We very rarely lose two in a row, so Wilder has a good record in these situations, but this now makes this game even bigger. Win, and we are right on track, everything rosy, before another International break, but I don't want to think about losing.

Ian Wright made a similar comment to mine on MOTD so I don’t I’m saying something outlandish.

I once watched Ian Wright describe a foreign player as "bumming" an England striker on BBC TV, because he marked him closely.

He is to punditry what the chuckle brothers were to comedy.

I understand the point you are making, but these premier pundits have shown time and again that they really aren't paying attention to what wilder is doing, so their opinions/comments are taken out of context. The responses on here have more validity because it is clear that the whole squad has bought into the Wilder way, otherwise we wouldn't be where we are. Deano is a super confident young man who, as Wilder points out in another interview, wants to be England goalie and Man Utd no 1. He's got some improvement to do to get there and I'm sure him and CWAK will work on that

One word: winner. Wilder won't sugarcoat - he'll drive the team to higher standards. He's been effusive in his praise for Hendo in previous games when he's made world class saves (Southampton, Bournemouth, Everton, Chelsea) and has done the opposite when he's made elementary mistakes (Chelsea again and Liverpool). So grateful he's our manager, there'll be none of that plucky Sheff United bollocks.

Ian Wright said he thought Wilder was being harsh on Henderson and should put an arm around him. I'm assuming that he'd forgotten the howler against Chelsea only three matches before. But then again I don't expect Ian Wright to remember his own name.

Chris was throwing down a marker to Henderson.. he must have seen something in training..
he’s clough senior esque (wilder)

Hendo knows he dropped a big goulie yesterday and will be man enough to stand up and say so, he will alo feel that he has let the rest of the team/squad down with that, then he produces a worldie save, he will accept what the gaffer has said as well, the squad and team will rally round him and Hendo will make sure he does not make that sort of mistake again, he will be hurting, like most people do when they make a big mistake in life, but we learn from it and move on. Yes Wilder is a Winner and he wants the team to be winners every time.
I don't think i have seen this sort thing in a united side/management ever (apart from Harry's side a little bit), but this is so much more and it's great, he does not want us to be the always plucky underdogs. The only way we can survive or achieve better things is to try to be better than the best and that is what i think they are trying to do.

he could start by improving his distribution

So an honest Sheffield bloke ( no offense ladies )
Who tells it as we all see it , we play well he says it , we don’t he says it , we miss chances , players have off days he calls it as we all see it , they thought he was harsh on his players on MOTD , I’m sure Wrighty thought that as a player
Everybody makes mistakes / errors it’s why they put rubbers on the ends of pencils
It’s how you react and learn from it that’s what makes you better and stronger , when I was playing cricket or football you knelt on the ground so if you missed it with your arms your leg stopped it
I prefer this attitude from our manager , non of this soft soap shite ,
Most of us have to work damn hard to provide for our families , we appreciate hard work and graft ,
It’s what we expect from our team ,
I bet you throughout his career Deano doesn’t make that mistake again
Well said Chris it’s what we all see and what we all want to hear
It’s a winning mentality , it’s the mark of a champion not willing to accept 2nd best neither should we

ian wright said matip was brilliant ?? eh?

At the moment these are my observations.
Set up and defending brilliantly as a team.
Given every team so far a hard game and not been turned over by anyone.
Creating chances in every game, probably except Everton.
But
Basic errors, continually giving the ball a way when an easy pass is not completed, so losing possession again and putting ourselves back under pressure
Missing chances and half chances
It’s early days still obviously, but it’s essential we improve on the above
