What was your first Blades game

Swindon Town at home in 93 .... 3-1 win. They had to play in our away socks.

I was hooked by the whole thing; the sheaf before hand, the walk to the ground, the atmosphere, reading the programme back to back several times, watching the warm up, trying to guess the starting 11, the size of the ground, the swearing.... just everything ... it was like for 6 hours the rest of normal life didn’t exist. (It still feels that way now)

I'd been going with my Dad to a few reserve games on Saturday afternoons, but this was my debut for the 1st team.

It was Blades v Charlton in 1981 and its was a cold grey day. We won 3-2. Just had a look on 11v11 and attendance was 11,687 though to me as an eleven year old it seemed noisy and packed out.

We scored 7 and Edwards got a hat trick.

A prize of scotch mist to the first poster to guess the opponent and season.
I was at this one too, I was going anyway but got a free ticket which they were giving out at school.
"What's that noise? A huge collective 'we knew it' from a million Wednesday fans."
The other thing I remember was it absolutely pissing down and the pitch looked like the tide had just gone out.

Northampton

1983 v Stoke in the FA cup. Crap game that finished 0-0, but completely hooked on the atmosphere.

Yes , we've been here before and at risk of boring the arse of long standing members , mine was a 3-1 win against Chelsea in 1947 aged 6 .

Strangely , my only clear recollection of the match itself is that of Chelsea's goal but my abiding memories of the occasion are that of my old man slipping the turnstile attendant a couple of fags to let me in for free and him giving me a massive hug each time we scored and lifting me up in the air .
The thread is worth repeating, if only to give us something to crow about. You are looking good to take first place, but I think my current position of second with 1953 will soon be overtaken by some other regular posters. And it does give us something to do in the care home...

Away v Cambridge, must have been April 79, the season we were relegated to the third division. My mates were going, and I had a big row with my dad, insisting that I was going with them. He eventually drove me down in the car and didn't go to the game. Went to Grimsby away that year too, Harry Haslam's last game in charge I think.

Very soon after I started going, we got relegated to the Third Division, then Boxing Day 79, then not long afterwards relegation to the 4th Division. Anyone had a crapper introduction to the Blades than that?

1978. The friendly game with River Plate. I remember virtually nothing from the game. I think we scored with a penalty and I do remember Alan Woodward because he had white hair.
The one thing that has stayed with me though was walking up the steps of the South Stand and seeing the pitch and ground for the first time. It took my breath away.

1-1 draw with Middlesbrough. My dad is from Middlesbrough but we were sat on the Laver. He was the only person cheering in the stand when they scored - I remember telling people that and them laughing, but I had no idea why it was funny at the time as I didn't know the fans were separate.

Looks like it was on Boxing Day in 1994. I'd have thought I would've remembered it being boxing day, but there you go.

Second football match was a 1-1 draw between Middlesbrough and Barnsley at Oakwell. That looks like it was in April 1995. I remember it raining and it was cold and I was crying for a lot of the time.

Tuesday after SouthEssexBlade

17/08/71 Beat Leeds 3-0 in second home game after promotion to Div 1

Flynn, Dearden, Colqhoun.

Proper glory hunter me.

I was at that one as well. Having beat Southampton I was a lucky John St terrace mascot, so I had to go to the Leeds game. That cemented my status

What a great cover, and what a great squad. They look like Reservoir Dogs, and John Harris looks like the Godfather (in total contrast to the self-effacing gent I met when he came to our youth club to talk to us).

It was 11 May 1968 division 1 v Chelsea last game of the season. 1-0 up, lost 2-1 got relegated. Some things never change.

Home vs Port Vale, 1-1 draw - towards the end of 1995/96 season? Remember nothing of the match but can vaguely remember John Street was still being rebuilt.

First one I remember properly - Home vs Sunderland in 1997 and that Borbokis belter...

First game 1964-65
19th September 1964
Sheffield United 3 Birmingham City 1
Scorers: Birchenall (2), Jones
Attendance: 16,390
Position: John Street terrace, ground level, white railings, half way between the half way line and the Bramall Lane End

1. Birchenall in action in the same season. Lost 0-2 at home to Chelsea on 7th November.

2. Mick Jones in action a year later (1965-66). Beat West Ham United 5-3 at home on 4th September.

'66 World Cup winners Moore, Peters and Hurst all played.

I can't remember but it would have been during October 1971, just after starting at sheffield Uni. If I couldn't have joined a queue and paid at the gate I might not have followed United for the last 48 years

Mine was March 1975.

The famous Blades 3 West Ham 2 game.
Watched it on Match of the Day later that night too.

V Tottenham in September 1966. United win 2 1. Tony Wagstaff scored after a few minutes as i remember and there was so much noise. It was a night match and stood at front of Kop with my Dad. I'd been to reserve games before but this was so different. I was 7 years old.

January 1998. wolves at home 1-0, can still see marcelo running towards the dug outs in celebration

1991, Sheffield United 2 - 1 Manchester United! What a first match to go to and the atmosphere was amazing just short of 28,000 on a midweek. We were slightly fortunate that Man U had a Cup Winners cup match within close proximity to this game and they rested some of their star players but it was still a strong team and they just couldn't handle Deane! Vinny Jones with his long throw was a huge weapon in these days although he gave away a few pens that season hand-balling. This was the season were we looked destined for relegation but in the end finished clear. I love the line in the video where he says "defeat in Manchester meant less than victory did in Sheffield"!

Play off semi final 1998 vs Sunderland 2.1
Borbokis with still probably best free kick I've seen at the lane. Seems to be no footage of this anywhere on earth either.
