It's a shame. I think everything about McGoldrick is great, except his finishing.

He seems like a confidence striker, and I seem to remember he started last season similarly.

I don't think that matters. It was header that bounced off the side of his head. The chances he's missed are one on ones, probably because he's got that bit of time to think and he's panicing. I recall he started putting these away last season.

Sorry to say but after 5 games & seeing the quality that even the so called 'poorer' [no disrespect meant] sides have we are going to struggle even more than I anticipated. Before the season I was quite optimistic with the signings in attack, I felt that we would be score enough to give ourselves a fighting chance of staying out of the bottom 3.


But after 2 goals from 3 games at home, against teams we could be expected to get a reasonable return from, & the unforced errors that are resulting in gifting other teams chances I am more pessimistic. When Norwich score 8 in 3 games at home sticking to their game plan [& congratulations to them] our 2 looks paltry, particularly when you consider the amount of chances we have created. 5 strikers who have scored 3 goals in 5 games is nothing less than bottom 3 form.

I fail to see how swopping the strike force every game builds consistency [unless CW has no idea what his best forward line is?]. I would much prefer us to have a go & be on the front foot, & that has to mean not playing a flat back 3, but playing DM or LF behind the front 2 & sacrificing JF or JL.

I still have confidence in the defence & would be prepared to sacrifice a bit of cover for them if we played 2 up front & 1 behind. Sorry to see BS out for 3 games as I would like to see him given his chance, he cannot miss more chances than the other 4 have already. At the moment if feels like pick 2 from 5 up front & give it a go.

On the positive side we are not shipping goals, the defence looks OK, we are creating chances & we do have options in midfield & attack. If we can stop making stupid naive mistakes & where necessary someone be willing to 'take 1 for the team', we might stay up, but as I said its much tougher than I thought!

Think it more than likely he will do this more often as he is more of a creator rather than a striker.
Could even be more prolific as coming on to things later in attacks gives a different kind of chance.
Wilder will surely want to get more out of him than we are getting at present,not critical of his work ethic in saying .that.

If there's one thing i've learnt from seasons under CW, it's to not judge how things are going to be in May after just a few games.

Yep he should have scored, but many a striker misses those - the keeper spread himself and saved it. It happens. It was that half volley towards the end of the game that ballooned over the bar. FFS lad, you are a professional footballer...... what do we tell the kids.... don't lean back, get over the ball and strike it in a controlled manner.

That one should have smashed the back of the net.

I like Goldie but surely he should remain up front and leave the midfield work to the midfield players.

Football has moved on in this last few years, the top managers don’t have players in ‘positions’ they have them in ‘roles’. I think wilder is the same. For example; JOC is a CB on paper but his ‘role’ is so different to that. In certain situations he is there to intercept, head it and kick it and hold the line, but he is also responsible for starting attacks, whipping crosses in and overlapping the wing back. Norwood is a midfielder, yet he often plays pretty much CB. The link between attack and midfield is often Mcgoldrick’s job despite starting on the team sheet as a striker. He also plays left midfield and right midfield and drops into holes created by enda overlapping someone as seen in the palace goal. He plays a specific role in that respect, he doesn’t just do what he wants and he isn’t just ‘paid to score goals as a striker’. Every player in that team should be expected to finish chances that are gifted to them. It’s not one player’s job to head it, one to kick it, one to cross it etc.

Well something has to give, we’re 5 games in and he’s well into double figures for scoreable goalscoring chances that he’s missed. That’s probably cost us 2 or 3 points already. If we are having the same conversation after 10 games, then I’ll be very worried and what he did last season becomes an irrelevance.

1. McG starts taking chances, otherwise we’re in trouble.
2. We change system so he doesn’t play.
3. We get a better version of McG in JTW.
4. Someone else learns to do the role.

Call it at least 10 then. He had 4 on Saturday that I counted. Not taps in, but scorable. He had 2 against Bournemouth, and has had at least 4 in the other 3 games he’s played. He should’ve converted at least 2, if not 3 of those chances, without doing anything that shouldn’t be expected of him.

World class? You think only a world class player could’ve scored the chances that McG has missed? I expect a certain level of competency/proficiency. McG has played at a high level.
