VAR avoiding decisions

Don’t think that one had to be clear and obvious. It’s black and white now; it hit the attacker’s hand, so no goal.
The Egan ‘foul’ was subjective. You and CW think it was a foul, Egan and all his teammates didn’t. So can’t have been that clear nor obvious an error can it?
Oh, just watched it back, The commentator on MOTD is another one who thinks it’s a foul. But because the players didn’t appeal it isn’t clear and obvious? Nonsense.

Not saying it wasn't, I’m saying if the ref saw it VAR will not overule him for a goal.

Whats changed since 18/08 when grafikhaus posted:

As was proved yet again, VAR is a load of bollocks. The late, disallowed 'goal' for Man City yesterday was disgraceful. VAR seems to be 'striving for perfection' but how can it when the technology isn't up to speed? If you haven't seen it, after 11 minutes, City's Rodri is wrestled down in the box by Lamela. A clearer a penalty you'll never see (remember at last years WC, VAR was going to end the argy-bargy in the box?) But no, VAR decided it wasn't 'clear and obvious'. Utter crap. Then - in the 92nd minute - Jesus 'scores' a winner. No Spurs player even appeals and the players go back for the re-start. But no! VAR has decided that the ball brushed against City's Laporte's arm. To quote the Grauniad's weasel words - 'It’s worth pointing out that the handball law has been revised. So if “the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm”, it’s a free kick “even if accidental”.

VAR doesn't need 'more work' or 'refining', it needs scrapping before attending a match becomes pointless.

So you are happy for us to lose, even get relegated WRONGLY?

My point is use VAR properly. At the minute we have a hybrid system. My view is fuck refs off.

Happened before and no doubt could happen again.

Liverpool's goalie in the League Cup semi was a travesty but I'd rather live with that than VAR.

That's not right though is it. We are living in an ever more transparent world, that can only be a good thing can't it?

Unless you are a cheat or crook.

It's what Wilder says about is getting cuter, Egan is a mountain, and won't go down unnecessarily, but he'll have to start doing so on corners (unless he's going for the ball), if he feels him climbing and then just ducks, never mind keeling over like they do in the Premier League, Soyuncu is nowhere near that header to Barnes.

It's one to learn from.

VAR is toss, clear and obvious is just a way of saying "I don't want hate mail", Kane should have had a penalty today, Mike Dean said no on the pitch, replays are as clear as day that Lascelles manages to "fall over", taking Kane out in the box, he didn't trip, he dived into Kane, stuck bits out to make as much contact as possible.

It's absolute bollocks.

Bit harsh calling players cheats and crooks when it may have just been the ref getting it wrong?

If the fecking man who gets fouled doesn't bother appealing, how 'clear' and 'obvious' can it actually be?

Ref didn’t see it hit his arm. The new rules were clear at the start of the season around hand ball.
I think it’s bollocks but they’re just doing what they said they would.

Having challenges would make football like a game show.....would be a farce....but funny.

There is no need for any challenges because every single goal is automatically VAR’d, also all major incidents and potential sendings off are VAR’ed every match.

3 weeks in and it’s already made many more correct decisions than without VAR.
Also noticed that managers aren’t complaining as much and there’s now little dissent regards decisions.
They asked Pochettino about the Spurs 3 penalty appeals. Posh said all 3 were checked by VAR and he trusts their decision, so has no issues.
Overall it’s been a big success but isn’t perfect and sine issues still need clearing up.
But to be honest anything involving judgement, when some things on a football pitch are 50/50 will be difficult.

The Harry Kane penalty incident was a perfect example, in the studio 1 said definite penalty, whilst 2 others said no penalty.
There was definite minor contact suggesting a penalty Kane did seem to be inviting the challenge, lost his balance then went down. It’s tricky even with VAR.

You might be technically correct with what you say but the final sentence is key, on a lot of decisions you could wait 10 minutes whilst some unknown bunch of people 100 miles away decide what the outcome of an incident and there's still controversy. They are changing the rules to suit the technology which is definitely a bad thing and the review process is still necessarily arbitrary. It's shit and detracts from the drama of the live match in order to give the media companies something to talk about. It stands a good chance of killing football for the supporters in the ground.

You say giving reviews would turn football into a game show, maybe, but at least accountability is brought back to the immediate environment of the stadium. The crowd would at least understand why the review was happening, the review itself becomes a tactical aspect of the match, not an add on to it.

If the ref didn’t see it then VAR has to overturn it and disallow the goal, if the ref did see it and he didn’t think it was a foul then he’s a cheating cunt. It’s impossible to get as high as he did without any help.

I was in favour of VAR at first but I’m swaying on the get fucking rid of it side because of the utter inept cheating twats in charge of the whole thing.

They have to make everything in football confusing when it really shouldn’t be, all to try and make their bumper pay packets supposedly worthwhile.

If some of you genuinely think there is a conspiracy amongst the officials to not give us decisions then there really is no hope for you.
The ref didn’t think it was a foul from his viewpoint at the time. He got it wrong in my opinion, but it wasn’t clear and obvious and therefore wasn’t over turned by VAR.
This is all perfectly in line with what the PL stated would happen, it’s just a shit decision but there’s no conspiracy. They’re happening in many games because the PL didn’t want VAR to be overly intrusive or undermine the man making decisions on the pitch. The alternative is the ref going over to the sidelines to make the call and slowing the game down further. Those are the only options.

There are other options:

1 Scrap VAR
2 Introduce appeals like cricket, two each per side per match. Can also add one for games with extra time?
3 Make an offside review only successful if the entire upper torso is offside, owt else then the on field decision wins.
4 Apply the attacking players handball to defenders.
6 Scrap VAR

1.) never going to happen.
2,) crazy idea, why not have VAR overrule everything?
3.) Thats a law change nothing to do with VAR.
4.) You want every time the ball hits a defenders hand to be a penalty, that’s even worse.
5.) again not going to happen.

I have thought of one alternate. The VAR ref is the highest authority and overrules the on pitch ref whenever he/she likes.
PS. You didn’t answer the conspiracy question. You don’t honestly believe it do you?

If VAR is there to make sure the result is fair, then points for results should only be released mid week once the pundits and experts can review every single incident on the pitch.

VAR is shit and only suits TV fans. I guess that’s the future.

I’m in the ground and I want the decisions to be correct with the laws so I’m one who doesn’t fit your generalisation. The issue is the subjectivity.
I’d remove the PL protection of the integrity of the on field official and let VAR make the call if it’s incorrect on a goal or a sending off or a penalty.
Corners, throw ins and free kicks I’ve leave alone. Team should defend properly even if that goes against them.
However, I’m fully aware how hard it is to make these decisions, and how easy it is for everyone to pick at what’s wrong with them while they are tweaked.

No

You keep saying nobody appealed but Egan does afterwards, and Wilder did, such that he mentions it in his post-match interview. I’d argue a good few players won’t have seen it. Lack of appeal isn’t a valid argument at all. Was it a ‘clear and obvious’ error? Yes, the video shows that. Same, with the Tottenham penalty. VAR not overturning these incidents, yet disallowing the City goal for the handball, is alienating a lot of people.

Out of interest, what would have made the foul, clear and obvious then?
