I have little respect for any pundit putting us 20th, have they seen how poor Brighton and Norwich are? Even the slightest cast of an eye over performances and signings will tell you they are going to be in more trouble than us. I wish I could pick a third team I consider us much better than but I think the final place will be a right rumble between about 6 of us. (Of course I could be as wrong as the pundits).

I’ve been surprised by the number of pundits that hold Norwich in such high regard. I appreciate that they won the league last season but their defence was poor and they let in a lot of goals.

I agree, they also look like putting the ball in the back of the net could be harder than last season judging by pre-season.

Every one will make us favourite for relegation, why wouldn’t they, unfashionable northern club who have been out of the lime light for 12 years, we are the obvious selection
It’s up to us, the team and fans to see if we can prove everyone wrong, who knows going to be a blast

Have us to finish 20th (on average across the pundits). I seem to think John Ashdown, who wrote the article, is a Blade, so guessing he went higher.

Not wanting to pick holes in a good article, but which games last season did we as John said start with a back 4? I don’t think there’s been a single game since we switched to it at Gillingham that we’ve ditched it – as highlighted by CW’s preference to move Stevens back rather than go with one fewer centre-back, he will go to great lengths to keep that shape, and while we’ve tweaked other parts this has been the consistent part.

It's not the fact that everyone has us as favourites to finish bottom, that's only to be expected. If they can back it up with some reasonable knowledge about us then fair enough.
But 90% of the pillocks making a contribution know absolutely nothing about us

Even pundits and writers in the prem have become elitist, stuck in their ivory towers,
Our history past and present count against us even our geopolitical position is frowned upon by these snobs who to a man basically have no idea who we are or what we've become.

The majority of these buffoons are barely aware of life outside the PL and clearly haven't paid attention to this management team.

Just another one to pin to the dressing room wall.

I wondered that. We switched to it a few times during games but I can't recall many / any starts with that formation.

Also - and I have nothing but gut feeling on this - I feel that every time we went to a four, we ended up looking worse...

It's the London gravitational effect for national Sports Journalists. The closer to London the more publicity and the better they see the team (Liverpool and Manc clubs excluded). They probably all had Fulham down as finishing tenth or something like that last season.

I do think there may have been some in-game alterations on a handful of occasions. Was Bristol City at home one where we went to it in the second half (and possibly went 2-1 up with it) before that particular arrangement collapsed? Any time we switch to it I feel uncomfortable, such is the familiarity with 3. This is also why the small number of times we’ve done so I feel I’ve noticed (because of the instant discomfort).

Hope the pundits carry on with their gloomy forecasts. Makes CWs pre game talk much easier. It’s us against the world and I wouldn’t want it any other way. To quote the Millwall song “No one likes us, we don’t care”

I think it's a pretty decent write-up, the ranking notwithstanding and you can't really blame them for that one either. It's certainly better than most I've read this summer that are churned out to fill the gaps on crap websites when they run out of transfers to wildly speculate over. Putting us bottom or near bottom isn't unreasonable, it's just the sheer laziness and snobbery you detect in the reasoning.

To me, most of these bad predictions seem to fall into three categories.

One is on the kind of website that's mainly made up of Top Ten clickbait articles (number 5 will shock you). The writer flips a coin to decide whether Liverpool or Man City wins. Then it comes to the three for the drop and he decides that for the past few seasons, 2 out 3 newly promoted sides go back down, that's 2 of his sorted and as he knows Villa's name and sees they've spent a load, decides that's the safe one. Another coin toss to decide the third relegation spot and he buggers off for lunch.

Another believes they do proper research because they open up a wikipedia tab. They see we were in League 1 not long back and still have some of that squad in place now. In truth they know bugger all about League 1 but think they do so they imagine us playing teams like Worksop Vikings and Macclesfield Athletic or something and all the squads are made up of blokes who are brickies and gas-fitters in the week. Therefore presumably we're a team of cloggers who've jumped 2 leagues merely by fluke and we'll be shown up for that now. They don't say as much but change the phrasing to workmanlike, honest and traditional because they reckon us northern folk will see it as a compliment. They'll mention Warnock because that backs them up somehow.

Third looks might open up another browser tab with a few stats because they figure the key to success is appearing to know all the teams but they still make wild assumptions. They see a good defensive record so write that we "have a well drilled back four." They might see Wilder has an amazing win ratio or has achieved so many promotions but they don't quite believe it because he's english but they do see a picture of him thumping his chest so they put "passionate manager" in. They might also chuck a line in about a "aptly named talisman striker, Billy Sharpe" because they think it makes them look clever. Maybe they come across the phrase overlapping centrebacks which they don't quite understand so they assume it means everyone gets thrown forward and the keeper lumps it up so they put a bit in about us being "exposed on the counter in the fast-paced premier league game" because we must slow, ponderous and reckless. Then they hit post and wonder how long before they'll be stood in front of a screen on Sky sports transfer centre.

BTL comments on the Guardian piece are interesting, for two reasons.

1. Surprisingly large number of Wednesday fans saying we will survive. 2. Surprising amount of goodwill towards the Blades from neutrals - I know this is the Guardian, but even so.
