Callum Robinson , as I'm sure you guessed .

Just on the evidence I have seen so far , it is clear that he is an outstanding talent with all the attributes necessary to become a player of the very highest calibre .

What I don't understand is the desire of many on here to play him as an out and out striker . Whilst I have no doubt that he would do an admirable job in that position , I also have no doubt that to some extent it would be a waste of his abilities .

Since the departure of Michael Brown , an obvious shortcoming in our formation has been the lack of an attacking midfielder who cannot only go past people , pick a pass and provide goal scoring opportunities for the front two , but also weigh in with a significant number of goals himself .

This young man has all those attributes in abundance and , in my view , it would be an almost criminal waste to use him in any other role .

Had always assumed that Freeman and Morrison would be competition for Duffy (IF Duffy is still around of course . . . . . Hopefully he is).
I've not seen Robinson play yet but from what you're saying maybe it'll be Robinson and Morrison will be competing for the 'Duffy' role with Freeman as competition for Fleck instead perhaps?
Or maybe they can all play in various positions in which case winner-winner and we'll have cover and competition in abundance!!

Agreed - he seems pound for pound an outstanding bit of business

Agree with the first bit and the second bit, after all TC started life as a striker.

Not so sure about the 3rd bit though ISJS unless Duffy is being airbrushed out of the annals of SUFC history as the next stage of the alienation process!

No intention of doing that !

Duffy's contribution to our success has been immense and I still believe he could do a great job for us in the Prem if given the chance , which sadly I don't see happening .

However , for all his qualities he's never been a consistent goal scorer whereas I think Robinson will be , along with possessing all the other attributes required to be an outstanding attacking midfield player .

He’s not dirty and cynical enough to be a midfielder.

....... who was better than all of the above , right ?

Oh dear Joe! I was only having a joke with you mate - hence the winking emoji!

If you want my honest opinion based on what you wrote about Robinson - My initial impressions (based on both games v us last season and at least one the season before - oh and bits I’ve seen on the telly) are that he’s a goal threat more than he is a player who sits deeper and pulls the strings. So, I think a more forward attacking role would suit him and us better.

I do think that a more physical type of midfielder would benefit us and I don’t see him in that mould tbh.

Judging on what I've seen of him so far, I would say this guy will be in the Premiership next season even if we aren't. The one I don't get so far is Musset, £10'000,000 , really ?...…... :tumbleweed:

He didn't cost £10,000,000
If he ever does we've stayed up and he's scored the goal that wins France the world cup

In a midfield 3 , a hard an who can get tackles in can be an asset but plenty of teams down the ages have been successful without one and I certainly don't see Callum fulfilling that role .

His strengths are being able to carry the ball from deep and either go past people ( often with apparent ease ) or pick out a defence splitting pass and then be in and around the box to finish the move off .

If they aren't the hallmarks of an attacking midfield player , then I don't know what are .

If the choice is playing someone in that role or someone whose specialty is kicking lumps out of the opposition , I know which gets my vote every time .

Well I think you need both Joe.

That famous 1970’s team had that. John Harris signed Trevor Hockey and briefed him to win the ball and give it to Currie (so the legend goes).

The choice is not one or the other is it? That’s my point. A good team will have a mix of pace, skill, height, aggression, creativity, etc. I think Fleck is the only aggressive ball-winner at present and I’d look to recruit competition in that respect and leave Robinson to operate in the final third.

He looks to be a “character” who is well liked by the rest of the squad already if social media is anything to go by. Could be a good addition for quality on the pitch and a boost for squad morale off it.

I'm giving up on this one but before I do , may I remind you that your original comment to which I responded was "He's not dirty and cynical enough to be a midfielder " .

Perhaps you'd like to reconsider that statement and accept that midfielders with other qualities are equally if not more important. In simple terms , I don't think there's much argument as to which of the two gentlemen you mention above were of the most importance .

Feel he will turn out to be our best signing and will get 10 goals plus this season no doubt. He still at that age to improve and get even better as well.

I’ll give up on it too Joe. You made a reference to Michael Brown. Michael Brown was a great player for us. One of the best in recent decades, but not a patch on the great TC or the others you mentioned. I agree with you on that.

My response about Robinson not being dirty or cynical enough was a joke, but was in response to the Michael Brown reference, because although Brown was excellent he also become more and more reliant on physical and cynical tactics as he got older and slower. If you were at the Port Vale game on Boxing Day (Or was it New Year’s Day?) when the snow came down, a few years ago, you’ll know what I mean.

I can see some merit in your suggestion: David Brooks springs to mind. There was a player who could attack from a deeper role and looked perhaps better suited to that than an out and out striker. I can understand why you may be thinking that a similar role might be ideal for Robinson, and you may be right? I just don’t think we know that at the moment. But based on what we have in the squad at present I’d see Robinson as a more forward attacking player. And I’d like to see us strengthen the more physical side of our midfield.

I’ll go with whatever Wilder thinks anyhow.
