I would have liked to have seen him on the bench today personally.

I know he isn't the finished article and I know he has a great deal of work to do in order to break into the first team scene however his performances outside of the first team warrant a sniff, surely?

On the bench today we had a couple of CB's and a couple of Strikers, we then had Blackman, Lafferty and Carruthers.

I'm not sure which shirt I would have taken but part of me is inclined to lean towards Carruthers. This lad totally frustrates me! He comes on and he looks like he wants to make things happen at times he is horrendous, his passing is yet to be desired and well... all in all, he is underwhelming.

Slater came on the other week and did more to get my bum off the seat than Carruthers does in most games.

But then again, 3 defensive players on the bench?

Wilder said the other day that Slater shouldn't be anywhere near the first team, so I doubt we'll be seeing much of him unless another injury/suspension crisis hits.

Agree with you though that he had something about him.

I'm confident Reagan Slater will ultimately be a fantastic player for Utd, but he is still a young lad with a lot to learn. He most certainly didn't embarrass himself v Preston, but whilst we are pushing for the playoffs/top two, I think there are more experienced options available.

Should that cease to be the case, I'd love to see him get more games in the first team squad :)

I agree that when the other option is Carruthers I'd rather have Slater. He's young and inexperienced but Samir has done naff all in his last handful of appearances whereas Slater was at least as good but in my opinion better at Preston than Carruthers has been lately, and will want to play, and prove himself.

Obviously we're missing Brooks so our bench is a little odd at the moment, as he's often our first choice sub, and I wouldn't be surprised if he pushes Samir of the bench altogether when he's back, and it's January so there might be a few more names come Wendy, but it's a bit harsh if Wilder has said he shouldn't be anywhere near the first team, I'd definitely play him at Ipswich.

Who are the more experienced players in centre mid?

Carruthers has proven himself ineffective and likely will be off.

In reality, at this stage of his career and the fact were Now in the championship, he shouldn’t be any where near the squad.
Just shows how light we are

Who’d have gone in No.10 role when Duffy went off if he’d have gone on bench instead of Samir?

He’s a more composed player than Carruthers already.

Why are people comparing Regan Slater with Samir Carruthers? They’re completely different players so if Regan is to be on the bench it would have to be for one of the defenders for now.

Regan Slater will probably be involved in some capacity at Ipswich.
Wilder saw something in carruthers, but as yet he’s pulling no trees up. But how long was coutts here before realising his potential. I know in the modern football era, players need to be up and running from the off.
But I think Samir as still got something to give. Wether CW can wait till then, is another question

I thought Regan was a girls name.

SHUT IT!

I think it says more about the depth of the squad that this conversation is taking place....that said Regan Slater will be a big player for us in the near future for an 18 yr old to be considered good enough for first team consideration shows how highly rated the lad is and having watched him play 18’s & 23’s he would not disgrace himself one bit. Good on the ball , good range of passing and energy levels and for a lad of his size he loves a challenge.....reckon he’ll start at Ipswich , with a good showing he could well earn a place in the squad at the expense of Carruthers who I think will be allowed to leave

Loan for Slater – off to Scunny.

Bit of a shit move
Should be looking to move up a level from where he was last season

Another of these young players we may well just outgrow, it’s a shame for the youth but that’s football

Must admit I thought he’d be heading to League 1 too. I guess an option is that he impresses in the first half, we recall him in Jan, and he heads to League 1 – similar to last season for Tyler Smith.

Once more a young academy product, probs the most highly regarded for 2 or 3 seasons goes out on loan to gain experience and it has had 3 posts since 3pm yesterday.
And not one of them being positive.

At 19/20 years old it’s only about playing games. The lad will have nearly 100 games under his belt before he is 21.

The club is now in a position where they can take their time in young players development. If they are ready at 21 or 22 years old then so be it.

Good luck to Regan.

What do you want people to say? He’s gone on loan to Scunthorpe. The level he was at last year.

Rather that that a shit comment like the one you made.

It is about playing as many games on loan as possible. Would you prefer he went to a League one side and play 15 games?
Or go on loan and play 40 to 50 games.

Do think at 19 he should be ready now?

Make no mistake. This is a CW decision so why don’t you trust him to develop Slater in the way he sees fit.

Many of the current squad developed nicely in the lower leagues before moving up to the Championship and now Premier League.
This pathway is clearly liked by CW.

I would trust his judgement before anyone.

Think in pre season the lad has looked well for us and hasn't looked out of place at all. I hope he does well at scunthorpe and then we might possibly recall him in January and take him to the next level. He looks more than capable of it from what I have seen so hope he keeps developing and getting better. Wish him good luck.

What I’d prefer is for him to be playing 40 games for a L1 side. However that doesn’t seem to be an option right now so it will have to be L2. Hopefully they have a good set up there, play the game the right way and will further his development but tbh, I know little about Scunny at the moment.

I’m not sure why you’re under the impression that no one cares about youth team players. Roy does a regular ‘View from’ on all our loan players at regular intervals and there’s always interest in how the young players are getting on and similarly there are plenty of people who read Phil’s posts and blogs about the youth teams.

The number of replies on this forum tells a different story.

Of course there is reasonable coverage and quite a few regulars like yourself who always contribute but it is poor.

Many clubs in our position really promote the 18s and 23s within their club. We really don’t.

Finally, it would be great for Regan to swoop in at a league one club at this stage but as football grows and the money involved grows all through the leagues, it is very difficult to find any league club who will be happy to except a 19 year old player and play him 40 games a season.

What’s negative about my post? I’ve specifically said I hope he does well enough to earn a move to League 1 to further improve his development?
