Played RCB at Burton for 30 mins or so. I have to admit, i am a bit nervous about our second string CB's - Jags, Stears & Bryan.

I think Jags has a role to play, but was just wondering what that role might be. Maybe the overlapping CH's won't be employed quite as much this season.
I really want Bryan to succeed but he's looked woeful whenever I've seen him to this point.

I just thought at his age he'd be the more central defender. I only saw the Betis game and he was central then.

Jagielka was RCB in the Betis game also. We saw one attempted overlap from him then Stearman was central – their similar appearance/number from a distance didn’t help the distinction admittedly, but that was the lineup. I mainly only noticed it initially because I was interested to see who of him and Stearman would take the RCB role. Think I’m right in saying Stearman has still never played the RCB position for us, be it friendly or first team.

Writing Jags off in the RCB role might be premature. Cranie looked lost even at new year at Wigan, nevermind in pre-season. It's a strange role to get used to.
BUT - that said - he's 36. I'd rather have someone younger and more athletic.

Oh did he. I honestly missed that. Thank you for clearing it up. I guess the overlap will be a bit more infrequent then now.

Not writing him off. I've got a lot of time for Jags. To be honest I think a more defensive RCB will prove invaluable at Premiership level.

I never said you were mate, just a few people are. Example:

Agreed Coatesy, there is a player in there with Bryan, we just can't wait for it to appear.

We'll need differenct things from our RCB and LCB this season. IMO JoC can do the usual and operate as a more traditional defender... Bash can certainly do the what we have become used to but I don't think I'm out of order saying old school defending isn't his strength there. So I see that Jags may play in games and/or moments where we're under the cosh or needing to see a game out. So wouldn't neccasarily need the athleticism we'd normally see from Bash and JOC

When you see RC's post count jump from 22 to 24...

Perhaps we are about to see how ruthless you need to be at the top level.

Maupay, McBurnie, Mousset, Robinson plus Sharp and McGoldrick fighting it out to be 5th choice. Maybe that's how Wilder sees it.

I'm sure Billy will walk out and captain us on day 1. Whether he'll be leading the line on day 38 is something else.

Hope he does. If so, it will mean he's scored plenty. The likes of Glenn Murray have shown that it is possible. It'd be a great story if he can finish his career with us, but only if he keeps doing it, not for reasons of nostalgia.

McGoldrick's days could also be numbered. The two forwards brought in so far are both quicker and more athletic that McGoldrick. Maybe Wilder also thinks he did really well to get what he did out of McGoldrick, but how far can that go?

He's another, like Duffy, who I've really enjoyed watching. But perhaps that is because he was a high performer at that level. Can he reach those standards at Premier League level?

Wilder hasn't avoided the sack all his career by standing still.

We might have to get used to seeing 'the Duffy role', 'the Coutts role', 'the Basham role' etc consigned to being that of the formation rather than associating them with the original occupants.

He might be thinking:
Hendo
Bash Egan O'Connell
Baldock Norwood Fleck Stevens
Robinson
Maupay Mousset

Subs
Moore/Dutch lad
Jagielka
Osborne
Morrison
Freeman
McBurnie
Sharp/McGoldrick

Exciting times indeed but perhaps not nostalgic ones!
Replace Maupay with McBurnie and you are good to go

Ive not aeen anythjng to suggest there is a player in there or one that is close to champ let alone prem level. Have you? It's a big jump from Man City u23s / Oldham to level we expect.

Wilder obviously thought there was a talent but he has not looked remotely close to good enough. I expect him to move on when we get further additions.

Could be a good move at the right price.

I thought there were some glimpses at Burton last week, DB, but i guess that's a reflection on the opposition, who i thought looked OK.

I agree, think he will move on, which makes LCB a priority i guess.

He's a bit dodgey, but id take him over Joe Hart

Talking of Liverpool keepers, Karius is on loan at Besiktas, how much would it cost to get him on a permanent I wonder? He dropped a few bollocks in a Champions League final, but had a good season up to then, and is absolutely killing it in Turkey, only 26.

He's turned down a loan move back to England so that's a no go.

Yeah my Liverpool fan mate mentioned that we'd be more likely to sign Karius than Mignolet. Old Klopp must have seen summat in him to sign him in the first place.

Karius is a good keeper, Klopp was a pillock that season, constantly swapping them around, needed the backing and game time from being picked week in week out.

It has done him wonders at Besiktas.

I may have missed this resurgence - but I’m sure I read that they wanted to terminate his 2 year loan early because he was crap in his first season
