• Salary - not as nice as the other prem teams in for him
• Guaranteed starting place - basically yes, but no one is in a cw side
• Location - furthest from london
• League status - big club, but only a few seasons at premier league level in recent years
• Club stability in the Prem - favourites to go down
• Team style and tactics - best option by a mile imo

Apparently Maupay is motivated by football, not pay (no pun intended). Let’s hope he makes the right choice for him, either way it will be the right one for us too.

And I don’t get some of the Maupay hate that’s starting to show, although it’s probably jealousy. He’s a 22 year old from Versailles. I doubt he’s the faintest idea about Sheffield or Sheffield United until playing us 2 years ago. Shows more positives to his attitude that at 22 he’s enough about him to go away and weigh up his options as opposed to jumping at the highest wage.

I’d like to think he’ll have contacted Egan who’ll be able to sell Wilder. If he does choose us, it’s down to Wilder, not the club.

Know what you mean, but to be fair, one of Wilder's tick boxes is that a prospective signing must really want to sign for us, and for the right reasons, so in a way he might agree with the 'embarrassing sentiment'.

Going elsewhere for what in my opinion will be at least 60k p/w and 20k more than we'll offer and having a good chance of first team football wherever he goes is no slight on his character. He might not even have to move house.

If he 'wasn't right for us anyway' then the management, who know him better than us, wouldn't have been trying to make him our record signing for the last month.

The not right for us stuff is just a weak way of trying to make yourself feel better in preparation for him going elsewhere.

Also I'm sure our lads would make anyone welcome wherever they're from, but it could be that a player from outside GB and Ireland would be more comfortable within a more multi-cultural squad.

It's not unfeasible to think his partnership with Benrahma worked so well because he is also French.

Very sensible of the lad, it’s a big move and he has a decision to make the fact he’s taking a considered view shows he has his head screwed on, I’d love it if he came to us, he was the one I was hoping we would sign! He’d Defo be a fan favourite his work rate as well as his current form is immense!

It's a good point. Other factors could be family and friends closer by if he stays down south; it can mean everything to a young lad playing his football in another country.

For example his main worry about joining United could be that his agent believed theres a 50/50 chance we’ll be back in the Championship next year.
So United might offer him a Jagielka type contract.

We could insert a buy out clause stating that if we are relegated next season,
then Maupay can be sold to any PL club offering 10 million.
With the transfer price being so low. Then Maupay could negotiate a massive pay rise with another PL club.

But Villa fans are saying they only need a back up striker and 20 million is alot to pay for someone who is expected to be a sub.

Of course. But if staying in/near London is important and playing for a more established Prem club then West Ham would be favourites. They’d probably beat us on wages too (comfortably I think!).

From what we heard it sounds like we’d ticked all the boxes, in terms of fee, wages, agent, etc. So if it’s not concluded in the next 48 hours I’d guess he is being tempted by other options. We’ll know this week anyhow. Hope we get him. He’s just what we need (plus McBurnie!).

They may surprise me but being West Ham and as always overestimating their level of importance, I would expect them to go for a bigger name, initially at least. They were linked with Diego Costa last week, who was always going to sack them off.

Villa may keep on spending although £15-20m is a lot for a reserve striker so I think the biggest dangers are Brighton (who are known to be looking for a striker) and Bournemouth.
