The amount of talent Morrison has is incredible. I remember watching a few highlight videos back in the day of him playing for the Man Utd youth team. Make no mistake, this was world class potential. Not a Theo Walcott or Micah Richards type hype, where if you scratch beneath the surface you'll realise you're mostly being wowed by athleticism. Or even a Joe Cole, whose technique was astonishing compared with other England juniors, but a bit less so on the world stage (and he probably did fulfill his potential in the end, I'd argue .. but that's a separate conversation). This was serious, serious talent.
The question is whether he can get his head "right". He's had enough chances and it still hasn't happened. Yet. For me, moves to Lazio and Östersund weren't the right ones. I get the lure of a "fresh start" and perhaps moving away from negative influences (he's cited them in the past). But everything I've read suggests Morrison is a bit of a home comforts kid. In a foreign country, where they speak a foreign language, without many mates, he's not going to thrive.
Then you ask the question: so why didn't he stick at West Ham? Or Birmingham? Or QPR? Or Cardiff? Closer to home, the same language. That's probably key, and I imagine what will have been filling the minds of CWAK. I'm no psychologist, but from the outside, he seems like a player who needs some love. Tough love, maybe. But love. And he needs somewhere he belongs, where he'll be a key part of the team, maybe even the main man. Certain players can thrive in short loan periods, but not all can. I don't think he's ever been able to establish that, for whatever reason.
Can he establish that with us? We've got a tight-knit squad who will welcome him in and give him a chance, but also not take any sh*t. We've got a manager who is exactly the same. More broadly the whole squad will make him realise what an opportunity this is to play at a great club on the ascendancy. It's not quite last chance saloon, as if he fails here he'll no doubt have other offers. But I'd wager that all things considered, this will be the opportunity of his footballing lifetime. Here's hoping it works out. It's worth a shot.
