Walker, Jagielka and Cahill? Despite the fact Cahill was never our player?

Maguire, came into the England team about the time that Jagielka dropped out of it, but he was still a squad member.
Three of our ex players played for England very recently and we practically gave them away because we had to apparently.

We should now benefit from the same situation, I look forward to fleecing clubs in a lower division.

A word of advice, with good intentions, divert your thoughts to enjoying the football. Let people who get paid handsomely (and some also plough an awful lot of money into the club), worry about finances. There's not a damn thing you can do about the finances, but you can do what good supporters do, and just get behind the team and Manager. It's much better for your mental health, I promise you.

Now we are premiership it seems we are going to struggle to sign top championship players and thats what we need as a minimum to survive. The goal posts change every season finance wise with the same player seemingly going up in value by 5m per year !
Unfortunately we have two owners making a laughing stock of the club with so much dirty washing it’s embarrasing. Thy are also making it pretty clear they ain’t got two bob to rub together now Wilder has put them in the promised land. All they can see is how they can get the munneh out of the club.

To keep club running cause McCabe did not and has not got the disposable wealth to own a club as big as us.

Moving the goalposts from your original post.

You claimed “three of Englands back four”... if you can prove me wrong then fair enough, but I cannot ever recall Walker, Jagielka and Maguire ever being on the field at the same time as a back four for England.

But we did have Jagielka, Walker and Cahill on the same field...Cahill was a good oan but he still put on The Shirt

Granted, but the point he was making was about the money we got for them.

The point i was inferring to was the time frame between the players, Jagielka, then Walker, then Maguire.

Robinson does indeed tick every box as I've been saying for a while, and should be a top target.

Watching him last night for Ireland, what impressed me was the quality of his weaker left foot. He put in 2 excellent in-swinging crosses from the right wing, which isn't his preferred position. He also cut in and had a left footed shot with a natural technique, bending it just wide from about 20 yards.

So you can imagine him on the left - which way does the full back show him? There's no easy solution. He can go either way and deliver quality. From there he can also pop up as a second striker - one who scores goals too.

He's definitely someone who's worked hard on his game IMO, when you look at technical aspects and end product. He's now getting the rewards.

Seems to get on with McGoldrick too.

The quality of his passing surprised me. Puts the perfect weight on his passes. Could easily play the "Duffy role" imo.

I’m probably considered a Warnock man, but would completely agree with that. I still find it frustrating that we were willing to expand the budget for such a visibly appalling manager in Robson rather than give Warnock the same flexibility mere months before when it could have mattered more. But equally Warnock could have done much more to improve his relationship with McCabe to facilitate that.

I worry that the remarkable job Wilder has done might be a suggestion to the owners that he can do a job on the cheap this year too. Last year only happened because we did actually spend a bit (albeit by also selling Brooks, though I’d argue at the time we were selling a squad player rather than a guaranteed starter) and were able to spend it on quality we couldn’t attract the year prior. We don’t want to be going crazy with the transfer cash, but at the same time we don’t want to be regretting a missed opportunity. There is a balance there. While we had good business last January too we shouldn’t forget that it’s usually a problematic window in terms of value for money. We need to therefore make the moves now, allowing any purchases to also impact on a full season of games.

Whether that includes the heroic return of The Unattached Player, who’s to say...

I think the way Warnock spent in the January of that PL season pretty much decided his fate. He had money, we needed goals, to borrow a quote from Wilder he spunked it.

I think he's borderline for the Duffy role - is he consistent enough with ball retention, and clever enough to pop up in the right spaces all the time?

As one of 2 behind a striker, perfect. As one of 2 strikers, no problem. As the 1 behind 2 strikers, maybe.

If we signed him I'd also want us to sign someone closer in style to Duffy to make sure we're covered for that role. It's a key area and we can't be taking too many risks.

Robinson and Watkins behind McBurnie.

Good points. Wouldn't mind Luke Freeman who has a similar style to Duffy and could poss cover Fleck aswell as he's a left footer. Robinson covering LS & CAM. Freeman covering CAM & LCM. Would be decent.

I maintain that Luke Freeman would be even better in the Premier League. Would love us to sign him.

I'd take that all day long but unfortunately you're probably looking at over £30 million in transfer fees alone for those 3.

With all the other recruitment we need i can't see us making 3 major signings, 2 maybe at a push but not 3.

IMO we'll probably get 1 major signing (£12mill+) and 2 or 3 others that would have broken our record fee (£4mill+) along with some good old CW wheeling and dealing.

Yeah I think you are bang on with all that. And to be honest I would take that kind of approach.

I love the look of that but the cold hard facts are, not only is that £30 million minimum, but it’s also £30m on 3 players yet to prove themselves in the top division. I know that’s the market we’re in, because if they had proved themselves then triple that price easily. I think a mixture of bargain basement hunting (<£4m), decent punts (£4m-£8m) and a marquee signing £12m+ is probably what we’re looking at. I’m happy with that as we have no idea who we already have that will make an impact.

Agree. I see him competing primarily with Mcgoldrick as the 2 Nd striker who drops off and roam. If we signed him the other forward signing should be closer in style to sharp (fox in the box or an off the shoulder type or possibly even a target man for variety) then we'd need a midfielder who can play the Duffy role but possibly a bit deeper (like Brownhill).

Got to be us

It really has.

I just hope we're not too inflexible with our valuation of him.

Assuming this club is us, the good news is that it's unlikely Villa or Bournemouth will be in for him. If they were, I don't think we'd bother putting in low bids. If we're low balling that might suggest we're the only seriously interested party and we think we have time to negotiate.

On 18k a week apparently so youd expect the transfer fee to be the only stumpling block for a change.
