Ha-ha-ha-ha

You're suggesting Sheffield United … it's two joint owners facing a lengthy court battle … and with no real history of spending on players to speak of … will be splashing out munneh on actual players?

I wouldn't get too excited if I were some.

Trust Wilder and Knill and no one else.

United will get £160m for gaining promotion, £80m up front, rest at the end of the season (plus any additional bonuses based on position achieved, equates to £500k per position). To not give Wilder at least half of that initial fee is unthinkable madness.

I wasn’t replying to you! :)

Fulham blowing it is not a reason to not spend money.

There’s a world of difference between the premier league of ten plus years ago and now. We’ll get £100,000,000 just for being relegated.

Where are people expecting the huge income to go? Are they accepting that the owners pocket most of it?

I think the misconception of McCabe et al 'pocketing' any cash out of the club needs to end. I doubt very much he has made a red cent out of United, but fuck me he has made some class fuck ups which on balance, still tip in the way that they need correcting and paying off. We seem to forget we hired loads of managers, many if not all unsuccessfully, in the past twelve years of PL absence. Given we've been on a diminishing return of fortune since, the outcome of their sacking, payoff and deafening silence has had to have had an effect, and that effect will be with us until McCabe sells up and they are completely forgotten about. We still don't know why Blackwell, Wilson, Clough were all mysteriously jettisoned. We can only guess why Weir and Adkins were. In any case, it won't have been for fuck all, will it?

McCabe isn't a crook.

I don’t accept the premise that they are, or have been idiotic.

I do agree that we should be concerned about what comes out of the court case.

But I wouldn’t “accept” an increase in budget in the low tens of millions. There’s just no reason for it.

I think they have been idiotic, simply because this dispute has been on the cards since HRH came on board and has come to the boil just when we don't want it to.

Fortunately we have had a mercurial manager, assistant manager and set of players who have just kept facing forward despite the looming storm.

The outcome in anyone's reasoned eyes won't be good for the club. Either side will walk away considerably richer than they walked into it. That payoff has to come from somewhere and I can't envisage some crisis slush fund hanging about to pay either of these twats off. It's a 'blink first' scenario.

The numbers are absolutely fucking unreal ..... " Every Premier League club receives an equal share of £84.4m from TV income with a minimum £13.6m TV facility fee – based on the amount of matches which are broadcast live featuring the club.

Then there is prize money of £1.9m for the side finishing bottom and £85m parachute payments for the clubs that find themselves relegated.

Survival for any of the three promoted Championship outfits will of course bring even greater rewards with an extra £100million-plus likely to swell the coffers.

The financial prize becomes at least £290m if the promoted club survives the first season in the Premier League "

Okay. From my limited, low angle trajectory, here's what I think is needed. Quite What Wilder thinks and knows here is suspended. The aim is to defend our way into 17th place, and not get fucking bummed into jelly every fucking week home and away and have Alan Shearer and those smug fuckers review our games barely hiding their complacent smirks and grins on MotD. The mission is survival and retention of the name Sheffield United with dignity. Forget Warnock, forget Bassett, forget Harris. This is Wilder, 2019-20.

We need a PL level goalkeeper. Moore is seriously out of match practice and is not good enough at this level. So, in effect, a £10-13m shot stopper would be in the post 33 age level, plus another capable of stepping in on loan. Ditch the rest. They'll never play.

Let's assume Wilder still chooses the current setup, and there's no reason why not (although he will need a robust Plan B)

Wingbacks. I don't think that either Freeman nor Baldock have the potatoes to defend and track at PL standard. Baldock could be a possible bench warmer, but we need someone again with experience - £15-18m - who can do the hard yards up the touchline and graft when it comes to making the likes of Raheen Sterling's afternoon less easy than it will be. Enda will be okay on the other side, but again, a loanee might not go amiss who has the capability to work to instructions. Putting the likes of Dowell in there will be fucking fatal.

Centrebacks. I think another decent, if not aged and seasoned CB (the likes of Cahill) would be apt. All three current plus Stearman won't last the whole season without injuries and suspensions, so we need some depth. And I don't think we'll get away with the attacking centrebacks any more. PL teams are far too good at cancelling basic overloads like that out and then going straight on the counter. I think we've chanced our luck this season and it's paid off. Besides, our CBs will be far too occupied stopping the very talented attack threats in the PL to be much fucked about bombing on and crossing to an unmarked Didsy or Billy to tap in.

Midfield. A real weak area where we will be over-run. The current drop-two, Norwood and Fleck, will struggle, even against midfields of sides like Burnley and Wolves. I think they are 'okay' in the Championship, but we do need £30m+ spent on more agile, more intelligent workhorses who will press, harry and basically stop the likes of Matic (even at his age), De Bruyne, Henderson from just dominating and wearing us out.

Attacking Midfield. Our first signing. Is Dowell good enough? No. He's too one dimensional, limited in capability and doesn't work hard enough (or at least as much as the tiring Duffy) for me. There's a reason Everton shipped him out and it's because he's not capable enough to go on the attack and either lay off intelligently or smash it in from the penalty D. We possibly need this to be our most expensive purchase, and £25m is the bare minimum. This is where the goals should come from and invariably does in the PL. We also need backup and depth, so the CM purchases should be either capable of doing this role or we should make a loan/purchase of a decent, pacey Champ/foreign talent to mix things up. PL teams need to fear us from this position.

Striker. Billy and Didsy are barely sufficient against top level defences and I'd be surprised to see either break double figures next season. We need pace and intelligence, and/or someone who is an old fashioned, does-nowt-else-but-boots-it-in-the-net centre forward like Murray who much of the midfield and wingbacks can anticipate being in this space in three passes time and is actually there. And we need clinical finishing, no 'oh, we grazed the post' or 'it went straight down the keeper's throat' when it drops in the box. The net needs to bulge eight times out of ten. That costs £25-30m.

So, in total, we are talking £13m + £18m + £30m + £25m + £30m. That's £116m, without loanees and contracting the likes of Cahill when he's released. That's to survive, not go mid-table.

Impossible. Dream on.

I’ve gone for 40-50 million quid.
Is it just me?. Does anyone else think it a little bit surreal to be talking about that level of investment after 6 years in league 1 with barely a pot to piss in and slightly more over the last 2 years in the championship!!!.
Whatever the budget. I still expect wilder to continue pulling proverbial rabbits out of hats.
He won’t be held to ransom as he’s too astute for that. UTB ⚔️⚔️⚔️

We should be looking to spend around 35-40 million.

I think however we will spend 20-25 million

Does anyone on this thread realise what the Wilder and Co method is? It is not to spunk money on big names and big wages. It is to create a cohesive team spirit where every player has a part to play. No primadonnas, no two tier dressing room. All for one and one for all. This week in Europe showed that this is the way forward. Albeit with top skilled players beyond our financial means. We were all a bit nervous of moving up into the Championship. We didn't overspend and achieved promotion within 2 years. I do not expect a change to the philosophy next year. Most of the lower half of PL is not much different to the Championship. The top 6 or 8 are a different league, we cannot match them yet, they are the best in the world. Decent survival, 12th to 17th the aim. This can be done without endangering the future. Trust in the management required. Let's keep riding the wave, that's all

Spending money doesn't mean big names, big wages, primadonnas and a two tier dressing room though does it.

I reckon he will get about 30M upfront and another 10-15M in January, if we are in trouble. In any other manager's hands that might not seem enough but this guy can do a lot with very little.

More likely 10M to start with and another 5m in Jan so we can keep up the push for European qualification.

Gonna be lots of disappointed bunnies out there all expecting tens of millions of fairy dust to fall on BDTBL.

Owners in so much dispute they couldn't put much in the last Jan and the year before even when we were well placed.

No prem money up front and banks looking at our income, likely wages and prospects then offering small high interest loans.

Suspect Wilder and Co are going to have a small budget and a tough financial time compared to most opponents, where else is any extra money coming from, but have thrived on this situation so far.

If we spend more than 15 million on transfers (not wages) I'll be amazed.

Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time. - The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.

It’s a maximum of 2 from an English FA league. You can have another 2 from anywhere in the world. Cardiff have Niasse & Arter on loan from prem & Camarasa from La Liga. Newcastle have Kennedy & Rondon and Barecca from Monaco.

So, it would be the sensible option to loan in a quality of player that we couldn’t dream of signing full time, one who would have the biggest impact per £. In my humble opinion, re-loaning any two of this season’s loan players would be a gross waste.

We spent £6m on Egan & Norwood in the championship. In the Premiership that's probably £20m equivelant. The numbers are bigger but that's just the ratio related to income and the name of the premiership game, we need to get our heads around that we are no longer shopping at Lidl.

Previous years relied on the owners funding the transfers themselves.

They don’t need to do that in the premier league.

They need to put some upfront or we wont

I’d say it’s more like £30m. 17/18 season we brought in £20million yet in the Premiership we should easily bring in £100million, so 5 times more.

Can we pin this on the front page of the club's website, you know just to get us all really fired up for the season ahead?

Anybody saying under £30m should realise we need 8 signings at the very least and that realistically only 2 can be loans.
How about 2 loans, 2 free transfers and the remaining 4 around 7-10m.

Wilder has said he wants young hungry players. If he can develop fringe players from top clubs, and get them to fit the team narrative, I would have no problem with that kind of outlay.

I’m convinced there are a number of young, ambitious players at the academies of top clubs, just gathering dust and praying for a chance of first team football.
That might be in the two cup competitions, or cut their losses and sign for an innovative and tactically aware manager in S2.
Let Wider and Knill do what they are really good at. With Mitchell’s help they can recruit future talent on a realistic budget.
I would also like to see a Milner or Cahill type come in to balance the youth with some experience , and for the youngsters to lean on.
I’m convinced that, under Wilder and Knill, the club represents an exciting and challenging opportunity for youngsters being held in academies overflowing with potential.
